IN THE NEWS
The stars shone at the BET Honors, which were held Saturday night at the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC, and will air on the network March 14 at 8p. Honorees this year are Lee Daniels, Mellody Hobson, Eric H. Holder, Jr., Patti Labelle and L.A. Reid. Cynopsis caught up with BET chair/CEO Debra Lee on the red carpet, who said this year’s Oscars diversity controversy “makes me prouder of what we do, because we celebrate our own. We don’t wait for other organizations to celebrate us, we celebrate ourselves.”
Honoree Daniels, who among other credits is co-creator and exec producer of Empire, told Cynposis he isn’t aboard the bandwagon bashing Hollywood for lack of diversity. “There’s been a lot of talk of lack of diversity in Hollywood. I’m trying to understand it myself,” he said. “I just don’t blame Hollywood. For me, I get my own money, I get my own actors, I make my own material and I do my own thing.”
Hillary Clinton is now in to join Bernie Sanders at Fox News Channel’s town hall tonight in Detroit. The former Secretary of State and the Vermont senator will convene at 6p on the eve of the Michigan primary and field questions from FNC chief political anchor Bret Baier. It’s Clinton’s first appearance on FNC in more than two years.
Entertainment Studios Networks fired another salvo in the company’s battle over what it deems “institutionalized racism.” Entertainment Studios and The National Association of African American-Owned Media gave notice to Public Utilities Commissions in New Jersey, California, and Hawaii alleging the states are facilitating racial discrimination in contracting as relates to Charter Communications’ pending acquisition of Time Warner Cable. "We are now pursuing all of our legal options in order to hold New Jersey fully accountable for this unacceptable failure in state governance by encouraging and supporting the proliferation of institutionalized racism within one of the nation’s largest media companies,” stated Entertainment Studios founder/CEO Byron Allen. “It should also be noted that Charter Communications, under the leadership of Tom Rutledge, has an all-white, all-male board of directors, with no women or people of color, and no Chief Diversity Officer on staff.” The latest move follows the historic $10 billion lawsuit Entertainment Studios and NAAAOM filed on January 27 against Charter for engaging in racial discrimination in contracting against 100 percent African American-owned media, and against the FCC for approving mergers that discriminate against African American-owned media.
Kevin From Work is getting laid off. Freeform opted not to renew the comedy for a second season. The show, from creator Barbie Adler, premiered last August.
Emmy-winning series Childrens Hospital will close its doors after its seventh season, currently airing on Adult Swim.
Show your support for this year’s Cynopsis Social Good Awards finalists at the NYC breakfast celebration on April 7. Time Warner Cable, CBS EcoMedia, Sesame Workshop, National Basketball Association, Blue Chalk Media, Deutsch, Disney, FOX Sports, Litton Entertainment, NBCUniversal, Optimedia US Pinkwater & Putman and more will be in the room, you should be too! Univision is charging AT&T with “redlining” after its programming went dark on AT&T U-verse network late last week. The broadcaster lost access to 5.6 million U-verse subscribers after the two parties failed reach consent on their retransmission contract late last week, noting, “AT&T’s discriminatory behavior is preventing Hispanic America from receiving content and information in language and in culture, which is especially vital during this election year.” AT&T countered, saying Univision “blocked” its transmissions from U-verse. “This is about nothing more than Univision demanding we pay an outrageous price increase,” reads a company statement.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is stepping out of Capitol Hill and into wartime for Soldier Girls, another series she’ll helm for HBO. The Emmy-winning star and exec producer of HBO’s Veep is developing the series based on the nonfiction book Soldier Girls: The Battles of Three Women at Home and at War by Helen Thorpe, which tells the stories of three real women who enlist in the National Guard during the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars and form lifelong friendships. Former soldier Nicole Riegel will write and will serve as co-producer. Louis-Dreyfus will exec produce with her husband, Brad Hall.
Production is slated to begin in May in Vancouver on Aftermath, the post-apocalyptic thriller from Halfire Entertainment. The series, which centers on a couple and their children struggling to survive after civilization comes to an apocalyptic end and supernatural creatures rise up, will debut on Syfy in the US and Bell Media’s Space in Canada in late summer. It was created by William Laurin (Missing, Power Play) and Glenn Davis (John Woo’s Once a Thief).

Johan Renck, who directed all six episodes of The Last Panthers, directed Bowie’s music video for Blackstar.
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
Programming slates, stars and musical acts that had hands clapping were the highlight of the Viacom Kids and Family Group Upfront on Thursday, but of course, that’s not all Viacom is doing to court advertisers. “Last year, we introduced Vantage, our data tool that enables clients to custom target their media campaigns across the Viacom portfolio. This year, we’ve enhanced the portfolio of products by utilizing our dedicated consumer insights and data science team to focus our creative development,” Amy Hyland, EVP of ad sales, Viacom Kids & Family, tells Cynopsis. “You’ll now see data influence our content creation via our new Velocity Content Network.” As for that content, “We will develop and produce original, culturally relevant content that puts our advertising partners first, extending campaigns across the social landscape with targeted talent and distribution,” says Hyland. “And our industry leading measurement tool, the Echo socialgraph, will allow us to measure the success of campaigns with an expanded sentiment tracking capability.”
