IN THE NEWS

Roddenberry Entertainment President Rod Roddenberry, son of late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and COO Trevor Roth, join upcoming Star Trek television series as executive producers. Already onboard: Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and Bryan Fuller. The new show will launch with a special preview broadcast on the CBS in early 2017 before jumping to CBS All Access.

Pop ordered a third season of Schitt’s Creek, two weeks ahead of the show’s season two premiere on Wednesday, March 16 at 8p. The comedy was the most-watched Pop original series in 2015 among viewers P2+ and delivered more younger viewers (A18-34) than any other original program on the network.

ABC‘s Once Upon A Time has been renewed for a sixth season. Co-creater Adam Horowitz tweeted the news on Thursday, thanking the show’s “most extraordinary fans ever.” While the show’s ratings have declined in its current fifth season, averaging around 5 million viewers compared to an average 9.2 million viewers in Season 4, it retains a devoted fan base.

According to a study by MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson, Netflix binges account for half of lost TV viewing. Hours spent watching traditional TV live or within the first week of airing dropped about 3 percent in 2015, and about half of that decline can be attributed to Netflix, said Nathanson, based on Nielsen data analysis. Nathanson noted the number of hours Netlix streams in the U.S. equals about 6 percent of traditional TV viewing, up from 4 percent in 2014. By the numbers, that makes the streaming service bigger than the smallest cable network companies, but dwarfed by the seven cable and broadcast giants.

TLC announced the celebrities appearing in the spring season of Who Do You Think You Are? Scott Foley, Lea Michele, Chris Noth, Molly Ringwald, Katey Sagal and Aisha Tyler will all be tracing their family trees, when the series bows Sunday, April 3 at 9p.

Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, 13, is joining Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo as a judge on Fox‘s So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation. The show’s new season will feature a younger generation of dancers, between the ages of 8-13, paired with All-Stars. Premiere is set for Monday, May 30 at 8p.

The final episode of Discovery‘s Mythbusters airs Saturday, March 5 at 8p, immediately followed by Mythbusters: The Reunion at 9p. All five hosts, Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman, Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and Grant Imahara reunite to look back at the science show that began in 2002.

AT THE UPFRONTS

Elvis was in the building at the Viacom Kids and Family Adult Upfront presentation, held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York last night. Rocking the house: The players in CMT’s Million Dollar Quartet, an adaptation of the Tony award-winning musical, brought the crowd to its feet. Following a nationwide casting held at Elvis Presley’s high school in Memphis, last month, the network cast Drake Milligan as young Elvis Presley, Kevin Fonteyne (Masters of Sex) as Johnny Cash, twins  Christian Lees and Jonah Lees (Tale of Tales) to play cousins Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart, respectively. Series is set to debut in November.

CMT president Brian Philips had help from network talent as he announced upcoming programming, music events and documentaries, including new annual event Concert of the Summer and a second season order for I Love Kellie Pickler.

Comedy Still The King debuts Sunday, June 12 at 9p. The series follows Vernon (Billy Ray Cyrus), a scandal-ridden, washed-up, one-hit-wonder who crashes back into the life of his ex (Joey Lauren Adams) and discovers he has a daughter (MadisonIseman) he knew nothing about.

The Rob Dyrdek produced The Dude Perfect Show will bow Thursday, April 14 at 9p. The season will feature appearances by Luke Bryan, Chris Paul, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Aaron Rogers and more.

During TV Land’s presentation, Keith Cox, EVP, Development and Original Programming, announced an overall deal with Darren Star, the creator, executive producer and writer of the network’s critically-acclaimed comedy Younger. The pact keeps Starr onboard to develop another project with the network. Teachers was renewed for a 20-episode second season, after reaching an average of 3.4 million viewers each week across all platforms.

The network ordered two pilots: An adaptation of The First Wives Club will be written by Rebecca Addelman (New Girl) and executive produced by Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City). An untitled project based on the life of Kyle Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) is being executive produced by John Wells (Shameless, ER) and John Riggi (30 Rock, Will & Grace). These join the previously announced pilot Nobodies from Eps Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone.

TV Land’s growing list of comedies include The Jim Gaffigan Show, premiering its sophomore season Wednesday, June 22 at 10, and Impastor, debuting season two on Wednesday, July 13 at 10:30p. New series  Lopez,  executive produced by George Lopez and Silicon Valley’s John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, bows Wednesday, March 30 at 10p. (Just hours before the Republican debate, Lopez joked that Donald Trump can go ahead and build walls, “because we can build tunnels.”)

Viacom’s music roots were evident at the event’s close, as Cyndi Lauper sent the crowd home (or at least to the bar) happy with a standing ovation-worthy rendition of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

DOING GOOD

The Joyful Heart Foundation and 1in6, in partnership with Viacom, have launched a series of print and broadcast public service announcements supporting male survivors of sexual abuse. The PSAs were directed by Joyful Heart’s Founder and President, Mariska Hargitay, and developed in partnership with Y&R Executive Creative Director/Writer Rachel Howald. The broadcast ads, debuting across Viacom networks this week, feature such notables as Andre Braugher, Anthony Edwards, Blair Underwood, Chris Meloni, Courteney Cox and more.

Discovery Communications has teamed with several U.S. companies in making new corporate commitments to combat wildlife trafficking. The network will create PSAs in conjunction with the U.S. Wildlife Trafficking Alliance aimed at stemming the demand for illegal wildlife products globally, and develop short-form content and virtual reality content spotlighting the world’s endangered species. “As a purpose-driven company, Discovery Communications is deeply committed to preventing wildlife crimes and protecting these species for future generations,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO, Discovery Communications.

Fuse is partnering again with Voto Latino for the “Crash the Parties” initiative, starting March 29, to encourage voting participation among Latino youths in the upcoming Presidential election. One Latino will eventually be chosen to cover the Democratic National Convention and one for the Republican National Convention, with their reports to appear on air on Fuse TV (media training included). Contestants can apply online or at live events happening across the country soon. The public will vote online for the Top 10 finalists, then celebrities (to be announced) will choose the two winners.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Adult Swim comedy from sketch troupe Million Dollar Extreme has received a series order and been given a title, Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace. The project stars Sam Hyde, Nick Rochefort and Charles Carroll, and is directed by Andy Ruse. The show, which has yet to set a premiere date, begins production later this month.

Health entertainment network Z Living and POPSUGAR, the online destination for millennial women, have teamed to create POPSUGAR-branded content that will air exclusively on Z Living’s linear cable network and online. The partners will also co-create unique advertising and brand-integration opportunities for both on-air and digital platforms. “This novel deal with Z Living is the product of two hot trends: first, women are increasingly interested in healthy lifestyles, so health entertainment programming is resonating, and second, TV networks are looking for ways to partner with online publishers – like POPSUGAR – that have a strong brand, a large, engaged millennial audience, and lots of great data,” said POPSUGAR Studios President David Grant.

COMING UP

Beginning the week of March 7, Outdoor Channel is welcoming back a franchise favorite: Pinks: All Out, the grassroots drag racing competition that previously aired on Speed. Subsequent concert telecasts air every Saturday through April 23.

Harvey hosts the feel-good, family- friendly series that bows Sunday, March 13 at 8p. A sneak preview airs Tuesday, March 8 at 10p after The Voice.

BBC America‘s Orphan Black is back on Thursday, April 14 at 10p. The fourth season sees Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) returning home from her Icelandic hideout to track down an elusive new ally tied to deceased clone Beth.

CASTING

Fox‘s The Grinder has cast Dean and Stewart’s mom. Ann Archer will play Lenore Sanderson-Grant, Dean Sr.’s ex-wife, reports TVLine.  The character, described as adventurous, outspoken and unimpressed by her son’s TV-star status, turns up in an episode slated to air in early May.
