The Television Academy is responding to the explosion in programming with new Primetime Emmy Awards rules and changes. The number of nominees in directing and writing categories for comedy and drama series has been increased to six nominees for 2016, and short form categories have been added. “This is a great problem to have for our industry, that there is so much quality work that deserves recognition,” said Bruce Rosenblum, Television Academy Chairman and CEO. Added categories include: Outstanding Short Form Series – Comedy or Drama; Outstanding Short Form Series  Variety; and Outstanding Short Form Series  Reality/Nonfiction. Two new acting categories have also been created: Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Series – Comedy or Drama and Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Series  Comedy or Drama.

Less than a week after the release of the first season of reboot Fuller House, Netflix has renewed the series for a second season. The network spread the word via Twitter.

In other Fuller House news, star Jodie Sweetin is joining ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars on Season 22. Sweetin announced the news on Wednesday’s Good Morning America. The rest of the show’s cast will be revealed on GMA on Tuesday, March 8.

Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church and Sam Hunt have been added to perform at the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards. The ceremony, co-hosted by Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley airs live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 3 at 8p on CBS.

After four seasons, Cooking Channel is pulling the plug on My Grandmother’s Ravioli. Mo Rocca, the show’s host and EP, announced the news on Facebook. “Sadly, Cooking Channel decided not to renew the series,” said Rocca. “While it’s disappointing, we are genuinely grateful to the network for allowing us to produce 54 episodes the way we wanted.”

Logo airs a “Runway to 100” marathon featuring every episode of reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race, starting Thursday, March 3 at 7p. The marathon includes new interviews with previous contestants, who spill behind-the-scenes gossip on their seasons. It all leads up to the 100thepisode and season premiere of the series on Monday, March 7 at 9p.

TLC’s “Say Yes to the Prom” initiative returns this spring alongside AT&T to offer deserving high school students across the country the opportunity to have the prom of their dreams. The program will bring a day of mentorship, prom dress shopping and tuxedo rental fittings, as well as head-to-toe makeovers from Monte Durham, star of Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, to more than 300 students across the country. Campaign culminates with a one-hour Say Yes to the Prom special on Friday, May 20 at 9p.

Music Choice is putting its marketing muscle behind breakout artists in 2016 with the rollout of a yearlong strategic initiative. “Music Choice Brand New This Week” focuses on the latest adds on the Music Channels, exclusive On Demand content and video premieres, and social media components.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

AMC has greenlit anthology drama The Terror, an adaption of the bestselling novel by Dan Simmons. Written by David Kajganich (True Story), who will also serve as co-showrunner with Soo Hugh (The Whispers), the series is set in 1847, when a Royal Naval expedition crew searching for the Northwest Passage is attacked by a mysterious predator that stalks the ships and their crew.

Becky Hartman Edwards, former EP of Freeform‘s Switched at Birth, is set as showrunner of NBC pilot Cruel Intentions. Project is a reboot of the 1999 movie.

Veteran TV writer John Tinker has been tapped as showrunner for Hallmark Channel‘s upcoming summer series Chesapeake Shores. The family drama stars Jesse Metcalfe (Desperate Housewives), Meghan Ory (Once Upon A Time), Treat Williams (Everwood) and Diane Ladd (Wild At Heart). Tinker co-created Judging Amyand served as executive producer and writer on Chicago Hope and The Practice.

A. Smith & Co. Productions has partnered with Global Force Wrestling and Jeff Jarrett to create a new wrestling show. “Global Force Wrestling is a complete reinvention of the sport that will really resonate with viewers  we’re taking what fans are traditionally used to seeing and flipping it on its head,” said Arthur Smith, CEO of A. Smith & Co. Productions. “All sports go through transitions, and wrestling is primed for its next evolution.”

EuropaCorp TV USA has sold Artificial Intelligence to TNT. Luc Besson and Bill Wheeler, who co-created the series, will write and executive produce.

COMING UP

TBS‘s Conan welcomes UFC superstar Conor McGregor on Thursday, March 3, at 11p. It marks McGregor’s only late-night TV appearance before his highly anticipated fight against Nate Diaz on March 5 in Vegas.

Love & Mercy, a portrait of singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys Brian Wilson, debuts Sunday, March 6 at 8p on EPIX. In other EPIX news, the net presents one-hour original comedy event Michael Ian Black: Noted Expert on Friday, May 13, at 10p, part of a free preview weekend running May 12 to 15.

Documentary American Masters - Loretta Lynn: Still a Mountain Girl, bows Friday, March 4 at 9p on PBS (check local listings).

Ovation TV heads into April with an array of films, series and documentaries focused on great storytelling. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries premieres Saturday, April 2 at 8p, while a James Bond marathon starts Sunday, April 10 at 12p. The network also celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday with featured programming, including Royal Opulence on Thursday, April 21 at 9a and Royal Love Story: The Wedding on Thursday, April 21 at 9:30a, featuring the nuptials of William and Kate.

NEW SERIES

Oxygen Media documents the lives of five rising comedians and the women who share the spotlight with them in Living with Funny, premiering Tuesday, April 12 at 9p.

National music series The Kate, named after Katharine Hepburn, features artists who have something to say and share it during performances. Season one features six, one-hour episodes with performances and interviews with Ana Gasteyer, Rickie Lee Jones, Jarrod Spector, The Ann Wilson Thing, Barb Jungr and Rita Wilson. Thekate.tv launches the series weekly beginning Saturday, March 19 at 9a. Show premieres nationally on public television; check local listings.

RETURNING SERIES

Enter drama: Bravo‘s The Real Housewives of New York City is back Wednesday, April 6 at 9p with Bethenny Frankel, Carole Radziwill, Dorinda Medley, Luann de Lesseps, Ramona Singer, Sonja Morgan and new housewife and socialite Julianne “Jules”Wainstein.

The downsizing trend continues with the return of Tiny House Nation on Saturday, March 26 at 9p at FYI. Series follows host John Weisbarth and renovation expert Zack Giffin as they show off ingenious small spaces.

Season 7 of Archer bows Thursday, March 31 at 10p on FX with a new twist: what was once a spy agency is now a private investigation firm. Plus, they’ve moved to Los Angeles.

ADVERTISING

Turner and 4C have announced the results of the first study that quantifies the impact of television advertising on social media brand engagement across Facebook and Twitter. The research finds that television advertising significantly prompts consumers to interact with brands on social media, and indicates that advertising during premium programming delivers greater social brand engagement than during non-premium programming.

Mobile ad blocking is on the rise, reports min. A new study commissioned by Retale polled 500 U.S. adults and revealed that 63 percent of Millennials use ad blocking software. In addition, one in five respondents admitted to using ad blockers on their smartphone or tablet. Ad blocking grew by 48 percent to reach 45 million active users from 2Q14 to 2Q15.

The 2016 Radio Disney Music Awards airs Sunday, May 1 at 7p on Disney Channel. Brands sponsoring both the Disney Channel and Disney XD premiere event telecasts include BAND-AID Brand Adhesive Bandages, Cheddar Goldfish crackers, KRAFT Macaroni and Cheese Shapes and Star Stable.

KID STUFF

Big Hero 6 has begun production for a 2017 premiere on Disney XD platforms around the world. The animated series is based on Walt Disney Animation Studios‘ feature film inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name.

Nickelodeon is moving forward with two sports-themed series from production partners Rob Dyrdek and Shane Nickerson of Superjacket Productions (Fantasy Factory, Ridiculousness). Crashletes, a viral sports clip series, is being hosted by New England Patriots Super Bowl XLIX Champion Rob Gronkowski. Jagger Eaton’s Mega Life (wt) is an action-packed docu-series that follows 15-year-old skateboarding phenom Eaton as he skates around the world and hangs out with his idols. Both series premiere later this year.

Alcon Entertainment has acquired the rights to children’s picture book series Pete the Cat with plans to develop it as an animated TV series. The project was brought to Alcon by Appian Way, the Leonardo DiCaprio company run by Jennifer Davisson.

CASTING

Fox drama pilot Zoobiquity has found its male lead. Peter Facinelli will star opposite Marsha Thomason in the light medical procedural. Also tapped for a lead role in the project is 24‘s Kim Raver.

Starz’s American Gods has added Ian McShane in the pivotal role of Mr. Wednesday. Filming on the adaptation of Neil Gaiman best-seller begins in April.

Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) has landed the role of Lisa Houseman, Baby’s older sister, in special event movie Dirty Dancing. The three-hour filmed musical event will air on ABC.

Tia Mowry is heading to ABC’s Mistresses in a recurring role on Season 4. She’ll play a literary agent who signs Karen (Yunjin Kim).

Ashley Zukerman (Manhattan) has joined the cast of CBS drama pilot Four Stars.

Stephen Tobolowksy is set to co-star opposite Justina Machado and Rita Moreno in One Day At A Time, the Netflix remake of the Norman Lear sitcom.

Ben Daniels (House of Cards) and Alfonso Herrera (Sense8) have been tapped to star in The Exorcist. The Fox drama pilot is inspired by William Blatty’s 1971 book.

Penelope Ann Miller (The Birth Of A Nation) has been cast opposite T.R. Knight in ABC’s untitled Meaghan Oppenheimer drama pilot, executive produced by Reese Witherspoon.

Christian Ochoa nabbed a series regular role in ABC drama pilot The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez, described as a sexy revenge drama with a supernatural twist.

Covert Affairs star Piper Perabo landed the female lead opposite Daniel Sunjata in ABC drama pilot Notorious.

Ali Wong is set as a series regular opposite Katy Mixon in ABC comedy pilot The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

OSN, the pay-TV network serving the Middle East and North Africa region, has inked a long-term partnership with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios. Subscribers to OSN will now have exclusive access to MGM’s library of films, future first-run TV series and mini-series.

Silvergate Media, the international TV production and licensing company focused on pre-school children’s entertainment, has partnered with SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment to bring the first 4-D Octonauts cinema experience to fans globally. The film will be offered to attractions worldwide, with the UK premier scheduled for May 2016.

Electus International has secured global distribution rights to Cheaters. The hidden camera reality series investigates people suspected of cheating on their partners.

Pasiones, the multicultural and pan-regional TV network dedicated to telenovelas and serialized dramas, is now available on Claro TV Satelital in Peru.

FremantleMedia China has teamed with CCTV to see the commission of game show The Eureka Moment. The FremantleMedia format will be co-developed for local audiences with CCTV’s wholly owned subsidiary, CCTV Creation. It premieres on CCTV-1 in June 2016.

Emmy-nominated post-production producer Bruce Golin died Saturday, February 27, at his home in Agoura, Calif., after a battle with cancer. He was 58. Golin’s credits included Knight Rider, CSI, CSI: Miami, and CSI: NY.
