PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox is developing music-infused drama series Cotton Club, based in Harlem in the Roaring ’20s. Project comes from former Empire co-exec producer Ayanna Floyd, who serves as showrunner; Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, producers of NBC’s live musical franchise; Broadway director Kenny Leon; and music executive LA Reid. Sony Pictures TV is producing.

Showtime Networks picked up five-part limited series Melrose, starring and exec-produced by Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock). David Nicholls (Far From the Madding Crowd, One Day) is writing all five episodes of the television adaptation, based on the Patrick Melrose series of decade- and globe-spanning semiautobiographical novels written by Edward St. Aubyn. Series, a co-production of Showtime and Sky Atlantic, comically skewers the upper class as it tracks the protagonist’s harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood through adult substance abuse and, ultimately, toward recovery. Michael Jackson, who recently formed drama banner Two Cities Television, and Rachael Horovitz (Moneyball, Grey Gardens) also serve as executive producers. Melrose will be the Two Cities’ first production. Along with Cumberbatch, Adam Ackland will exec-produce for SunnyMarch.

FremantleMedia North America signed a first-look deal with award-winning author Neil Gaiman that enables FMNA and Gaiman to adapt any of his work, from novels to short stories, for television. FMNA and Gaiman first began their relationship when the two joined forces to adapt Gaiman’s American Gods. The new deal also allows for adaptation of projects involving third party source material and intellectual properties. The partnership spans Gaiman’s involvement in all creative capacities, including as a writer and as a producer.

INSP announced the destinations for Season 2 of State Plate, the Taylor Hicks-hosted culinary travel series set to return in late-summer. They include Alabama, Maryland, Mississippi, New York Oregon and Pennsylvania.
