A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM NICKELODEON

Nickelodeon is All for One.

Nickelodeon meets viewers at every stop on their path to content. All-for-One programming means content flows freely across the Nickelodeon ecosystem. From popular shows to creative marketing messages, brands and IP reach consumers on multiple screens and platforms.

Lady Gaga, the talk of the Oscars for her Sound of Music medley, is joining season five of FX anthology series American Horror Story. It’s the singer’s first major role as an actress; no other cast members have been confirmed for the AHS chapter, called Hotel.

IN THE NEWS

“Diversity sells,” according to the new “Flipping the Script” report from UCLA’s Ralph Bunche Center. An examination of 2013 film releases and TV shows in the 2012-13 season noted that while women and minorities are underrepresented, “America’s increasingly diverse audience prefer diverse content created with the input of diverse talent.”

And NBCUniversal is on it, partnering with Chicago-based The Second City to nurture diverse voices. “The Second City has historically been a premier training ground for comedic and improv talent,” said Paul Telegdy, president, alternative and late night programming, “and NBCUniversal is delighted, through this partnership, to help make this incredible learning opportunity and exposure more accessible to the diverse talent who represent the comedy voices of the future.”  Saturday Night Live, criticized for its lack of diversity during season 39, added three black female comedians to its team.

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart offered a novel defense of Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, accused of exaggerated accounts of reporting during the Falklands War in 1982. The media is “putting in a tremendous amount of work to say the emperor has no clothes,” said Stewart Tuesday night, “when the emperor has spent like the last 20 years going, ‘Look… I’m naked!’”

In its 4Q14 financial report, Starz reported 23.3 million subscribers at the end of December, a new high, with revenue topping analysts’ estimates. “The 2014 performance at Starz validates the strategy undertaken to transform the company from primarily a movie-based provider to a true gold standard premium entertainment provider,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht.

The date of the 2016 SAG Awards has moved from Sunday, January 31 to Saturday, January 30. TBS and TNT will again simulcast the ceremony.

Is Lady Gaga a can’t-miss addition to American Horror Story: Hotel? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Ken Biller will jump in as showrunner for season two of TNT drama Legends, part of a new overall deal with Fox 21 Television Studios. “Legends is a huge priority to this company and [Biller] is going to be enormously helpful as we reshape this series,” said Fox 21 TV Studios president Bert Salke. “But our overall with him is also about development which we value enormously.”

Universal Television pacted with Mike Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick to adapt the married comic creators’ characters for original series, reports Deadline. “We’re always excited to usher in fresh voices to the television space, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Matt and Kelly Sue, a fantastic pair whose award-winning comics are as deeply realized as they are entertaining,” said Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria.

ITV commissioned Big Box, Little Box from Initial, part of Endemol Shine Group. Six-part factual format features families in the UK testing new products in their everyday lives.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Discovery Communications is diving into data. A partnership with Civis Analytics is aimed at bolstering Discovery’s predictive analytics capabilities and expanding data-driven decision making. “Our industry is changing. With all the consumer data at our fingertips and the digital ‘crumbs’ we all are leaving everyday across platforms, our ability to target individual devices and homes is creating a revolution in media,” David Leavy, chief communications officer, Discovery Communications, tells Cynopsis. “Discovery wants to lead in this new space, help our advertisers reach our valuable superfans, make our marketing more precise and help the content creators be smarter about emerging trends and passions. We think that addressability could be a big catalyst of growth for Discovery, and once we can unlock its value, it will be a big driver of media consumption down the road.”

When multi-tasking consumers have at least two screens on, ads on television were the focus 30 percent of the time, according to a study from Nielsen and YuMe. That’s versus 71 percent on laptops, and 93 percent on tablets. “It will be important for brand advertisers to continue running campaigns cross-screen, as viewers continue to show they are more attentive on laptops, tablets, and/or smartphones while ‘watching’ TV,” Paul Neto, director of research at YuMe, told MediaDailyNews.
