Good morning. It’s Friday February 24, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A flurry of news yesterday detailing a programming overhaul at FS1. News included network canceling its studio show Fox Sports Live, ending its run with show hosts Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole, whose final show ran earlier this week. FS1 will now place MLB Whiparound in the 11p slot once MLB season kicks in. Meanwhile, The Sporting News and Awful Announcing write that Katie Nolan series Garbage Time will also see the end of its run, at least in its current incarnation, with Nolan now being eyed for a variety of new shows that could run in late-night, morning or afternoon.

“Following the success of her Emmy Award-winning original program GARBAGE TIME, including the show’s successful daily hour-long run during Super Bowl Week, we could not be more excited about Katie Nolan’s future with FOX Sports and we look forward to further developing her role at FS1,” Charlie Dixon, executive vice president of content for FS1 and FS2, said in a statement to the press.

ON THE AIR

Speaking of FOX, four-time world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and current featherweight world champion Abner Mares are set to join the FOX Sports broadcast team as analysts for Premier Boxing Champions: Wilder vs. Washington tomorrow night at 8p. Holyfield makes a special appearance as a guest analyst, joining blow-by-blow announcer Brian Kenny, fellow analyst and long-time boxing trainer Virgil Hunter, Mares and reporter Kristine Leahy, during the heavyweight bouts. Working with NextVR, the two-hour PBC on FOX show will also be broadcast live in virtual reality with multiple cameras set up around the ring capture the action.

TNT’s Players Only initiative is now set to include appearances by Chris Bosh as part of its studio coverage when the series debuts on Monday at 7p.He will then contribute to Players Only during its five consecutive weeks of Monday night doubleheader action on TNT, appearing beside Chris Webber, Isiah Thomas and Baron Davis.

ESPN announced the return of Jon Gruden’s QB Camp series, a signature element of ESPN’s annual pre-NFL Draft coverage, returns for its eighth year this spring with seven quarterbacks hitting ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. In all, the 2017 Gruden’s QB Camp class is set to include: Joshua Dobbs (Tennessee); Brad Kaaya (Miami, Fla.); DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame); Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech); Nathan Peterman (Pittsburgh); Mitch Trubisky (North Carolina); and Deshaun Watson (Clemson).

MLB Network’s Spring Training game schedule, featuring more than 180 games in 37 days, start today with the Phillies/Yankees at 1p. Meanwhile, weekend action will showcase the Twins/Red Sox on Saturday at 1p while the Tigers/Mets square off on Sunday at 1p.

Meanwhile, NHL Network offers live on-site coverage from the Stadium Series Game featuring the Flyers/Penguins on Saturday. NHL Now will come live from Heinz Field today at 4pm ET, while NHL Tonight will have live pre- and postgame coverage on Saturday beginning at 7p.

The worlds of Disney/Pixar’s Cars are colliding with NASCAR courtesy of a new deal between the two companies that will spotlight Cars 3 this year. The movie hits theaters on June 16 and promotional plans are set to not only include Owen Wilson, the voice of Lightning McQueen, as grand marshal for Daytona 500, but also see NASCAR drivers Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, Daniel Suárez and Bubba Wallace will join NASCAR legends Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty as voices in the upcoming film. Moving forward, the joint effort will include a variety of marketing initiatives, including digital and social cross promotional activities and sweepstakes. Throughout the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, races will feature a Cars 3 at-track presence  including life-sized versions of McQueen and Cruz Ramirez – via a wide array of promotions, while a co-branded merchandise program with Fanatics will also kick off at Daytona 500 featuring the first film-related product available for fans to purchase.

Speaking of NASCAR, FedEx announced an extension with Joe Gibbs Racing to serve as the sponsor of the #11 Toyota with driver Denny Hamlin in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. “FedEx has been synonymous with the #11 car and Denny Hamlin for many years, and together we have enjoyed great successes on and off the race track,” said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior vice president, FedEx Integrated and Marketing Communications.  “The FedEx Racing program provides the unique opportunity for us to engage our team members and customers, as well as make a positive impact in the community. We are proud to extend this relationship with Coach Gibbs and the entire Joe Gibbs Racing organization.”

Joe Gibbs Racing also locked up Subway to serve as the sponsor if the team’s newest driver Daniel Suarez and his No 19 Toyota in four of this season’s races, beginning March 26 with the Auto Club 400.

PPG reached a multiyear corporate marketing agreement with the NHL to make PPG paint brands the Official Paint of the league in the US and Canada. PPG will receive the opportunity to integrate its paint brands into select NHL premier events. In addition to the NHL Stadium Series at Heinz Field, PPG and its products will be featured at future NHL Stadium Series games and the annual NHL Winter Classic game. As part of the agreement, PPG will have rights to use NHL marks and logos on PPG paint product packaging, on store point-of-purchase displays, in contests and promotions, and through social media and digital marketing.

O2 is renewing their naming rights agreement with The O2 in London for another 10 years courtesy of a deal with AEG. Deal points will see new technology installed in the arena to track and analyse crowd movements, and see double the number of tickets for O2 customers will be available via Priority Tickets.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Technology and social media platform 15 Seconds of Fame inked a multi-year partnership with MLBAM that will, for the first time in broadcast history, “deliver personal video content never before available to fans  their appearances on live baseball game telecasts  through a simple download of the 15SOF app.” The partnership will begin with this year’s regular season and include game broadcasts from all 30 MLB ballparks with the agreement also providing 15SOF the ability to capture and deliver fan footage from special “jewel” events such as the MLB All-Star Game and Postseason and access to scoreboard video moments from participating MLB ballparks.

ESPN’s The Undefeated named Lisa Wilson its new senior editor for sports. Most recently the executive sports editor at The Buffalo News, Wilson begins her new role March 13 and will be based in Washington, D.C.

ESPORTS

Turner and IMG’s ELeague announced plans to broaden its esports lineup, announcing the first-ever ELeague Street Fighter V Invitational. The inaugural event will feature 32 of the world’s best Street Fighter players competing live from G Fuel ELEAGUE Arena in Atlanta beginning March 27 with preliminary rounds on Twitch as well as a special one-hour recap show on March 31, at 10p on TBS. The 32 professional Street Fighter V players will consist of the top 16 competitors based on the 2016. Overall, six players will compete per week in the regular season with live competitions running April 7 & 21 as well as May 5 and May 12 on the network and Twitch. Playoffs run May 26 and the final stages  including the Championship live on TBS at 10p.

The Fusion Media Group is bringing together talent from Deadspin and Kotaku for the launch of Compete, a new esports vertical “that will tackle esports with the same discerning, probing, and relatable style that readers have come to expect of Deadspin and Kotaku.” The new vertical includes editorial coverage, video series, and a never-been-done esports event. Meanwhile, Gillette will serve as its launch partner. Compete will be lead by Deadspin Editor-in-Chief Tim Marchman and Kotaku Editor-in-Chief Stephen Totilo. “This partnership reflects Gillette’s decade long commitment to the world of sports, and we could not have found a better partner than FMG to expand into eSports. Gamers at all levels recognize the importance of precision  split seconds and minute movements make big differences. EA announced a deal with Europe’s BT Sport to extend EA SPORTS FIFA across the UK and Republic of Ireland. BT Sport will now carry the remaining four EA FIFA Majors this year – Season Two North American Regional Final in Vancouver  on April 8, Season Two Asia-Pacific Regional Final in Singapore  on April 22, Season Two European Regional Final in Madrid (May 6) and the FIFA 17 Ultimate Team Championship Final in Berlin (May 20-21).

2K and the NBA saw nearly two million fans tune into the livestreamed NBA 2K17 All-Star Tournament championship event via multiple digital channels during NBA All-Star. Viewership included one million on Twitter as competitor Still Trill won the $250,000 grand prize and tickets to the 2017 NBA All-Star Game.

Blizzard’s Nate Nanzer stated in a press conference in Korea that the upcoming Overwatch League will begin play in the third quarter of this year, according to WWG, noting that the period will involve acquiring players and forming new teams while 2018 will see the start of regular seasons. In addition, he noted, that the host cities for the championship games will rotate cities every year.

SLIVER.tv announced that it selected Nokia this past weekend to help live stream DreamHack Masters Las Vegas in 360° cinematic experience. The platform saw over 180,000 CS:GO fans worldwide leverage SLIVER.tv’s Oculus Rift, Samsung GearVR, HTC Vive, Cardboard apps in addition to the company’s web and mobile 360º apps to experience the tournament.
