IN THE NEWS

PBS is launching a free 24/7 multiplatform children’s programming service. Available this fall via PBS stations, the service will include an expanded PBS Kids TV channel and livestream on digital platforms – via OTT partners and PBSKIDS.org. The service eventually will integrate interactive games and activities. The new channel will significantly expand access to PBS Kids educational programming, making it available more hours, including during primetime and weekends when some families tune in together.

Univision CFO Francisco Lopez-Balboa characterized reports that the company wants to buy out Disney’s 50 percent share of English-language joint news operation Fusion as “rumors” during the company’s quarterly earnings call, saying, “We are happy with the joint venture.” But execs did divulge the price the company paid – $27.1 million for a 40.5 percent – for satirical Web site The Onion, which it bought in January. The purchase “will help us expand our reach and achieve scale with multicultural millennial audiences,” CEO Randy Falco said.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

The legal drama spinoff from Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise for NBC, tentatively titled Chicago Law, took another step forward. Longtime Wolf collaborator Jean de Segonzac is onboard to direct the upcoming episode of Chicago PD that will serve as an embedded pilot for the potential legal offshoot.

COMING UP

VH1 is paying homage to Angela Raiola, star of the net’s series Mob Wives and spinoff Big Ang, who last week lost her battle with cancer, by airing the full season of Big Ang today starting at 9p following the debut of a new ep of Mob Wives. A tribute special celebrating Ang’s biggest TV moments will premiere on VH1 in March.

MSNBC analyst Alex Wagner will be a guest contributor to the episode of Showtime’s The Circus airing this Sunday, February 28, at 8p. Wagner will join the team on the campaign trail in South Carolina this week in the final days before the Democratic primary.

Sportsman Channel is bringing back its Talkin’ Turkey marathon for the next four Saturdays, February 27 through March 19. The marathon returns for a fifth year with 12 hours of all-turkey hunting action.

RETURNING SERIES

ABC can see for miles. The network renewed The View for a 20th season, as Candi Carter officially steps in as executive producer of the talker. Carter joined the show last August as interim showrunner. Prior, she worked as a senior/supervising producer at The Oprah Winfrey Show for 15 years. The View kicked off 2016 with its highest ratings in almost a year. Unknown is the status for season 20 of the show’s current hosts.

Renewal on aisle one. NBC has given a midseason renewal to freshman Monday night comedy Superstore. Season to date, the comedy averages a 2.1 rating in A18-49 and 6.9 million viewers overall in Live + 7, according to Nielsen, making it NBC’s highest-rated first-year comedy in two years. The ensemble cast is led by America Ferrara, as the megastore’s most stalwart employee Amy, and Ben Feldman as its newly hired manager.

After a long run on The CW with host Tyra Banks, America’s Next Top Model will get a new look for its debut on VH1, including a move back to NYC. CBS Television Distribution and VH1 are partnering on a new season of the iconic franchise for a new generation; details on the premiere date and new host and judges are forthcoming. Series creator and exec producer Banks will continue to serve as exec producer; Ken Mok, also exec producer for the series’ full run, will continue in the same role for the next season as well. The series is produced by 10 by 10 Entertainment in association with The Tyra Banks Co.

Zach Galifianakis clown comedy Baskets will get a second season at FX in early 2017. The series, co-created by Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel, delivered the most-watched basic cable primetime comedy series premiere since 2014 and remains cable’s most-watched new scripted comedy series of the year in A18-49 and Total Viewers, averaging 944,000 A18-49 and 1.5 million Total Viewers.

NEW SHOWS

TLC will premiere Fat Chance, produced by 3 Ball Entertainment, tonight at 10p. “We’ve produced many shows about weight loss over the years and have learned that carrying a significant amount of extra weight can affect a lot more than just your body. For so many people, the emotional issues that often drain one’s confidence become the real battle,” exec producer JD Roth tells Cynopsis. “Fat Chance goes beyond weight loss. As participants lose weight and adopt healthier lifestyles, the show harnesses the power of their improved sense of self to help them find love as they deal with old crushes and, hopefully, resolve them – one way or the other. It’s truly inspiring to witness such courage and resilience as they confront fears to really put themselves out there.”

For those about to rock… Nickelodeon is bringing Richard Linklater’s cult classic School of Rock to the small screen with the series premiere Saturday, March 12 at 9:30p after the Kids’ Choice Awards. Produced with Paramount Television, the series will regularly air Saturdays at 8:30p. Series has been developed by Jim and Steve Armogida (Crash & Bernstein), who also serve as executive producers with Jay Kogen (The Simpsons). Linklater and producer Scott Rudin serve as series executive producers, along with Eli Bush (The Newsroom).
