IN THE NEWS

Dish Network CEO Charlie Ergen has never been one to mince words. Noting the OTT realm is “more consumer-friendly,” Ergen yesterday told investors OTT services are becoming “a direct replacement for cable and satellite,” and advised programmers they need to begin evolving their models away from the traditional pay TV bundle. He said Dish’s Sling TV will face increased competition from the live streaming service Hulu has cooking, adding “I don’t view that as a positive.” But Ergen’s not too concerned about network-specific services such as CBS All Access. “People put together their own bundle,” he said. “We’re trying to tap into that.”

Turner is partnering with the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on a writing contest designed to discover fresh writing talent from racially diverse backgrounds. Through the ABFF & Turner Writing Contest, writers with no professional television experience can submit pilot scripts for comedy or drama series. One winner chosen from each genre will head to Miami for the 2017 American Black Film Festival, June 14-18, receive a cash prize and the opportunity to meet with the original programming development teams for TBS and TNT. The contest is the first element in a new three-year agreement through which Turner will support ABFF as a premier sponsor.

“Hey, little one, you’re not the ‘only’ good reason to wake up early!!” With this tweet and an accompanying photo of herself and baby son Charley, Savannah Guthrie announced she’ll return to NBC’s Today on March 3 following a three-month maternity leave.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

In an early renewal, Fox gave the green light to freshman music drama series Star. Series was co-created by the co-creator of the network’s biggest series in years, Empire’s Lee Daniels, as well as Tom Donaghy.

In another early renewal, Fox grabbed more Lethal Weapon, its action-comedy-drama series from Matt Miller, Warner Bros. TV and Lin Pictures. The network initially picked up only five additional episodes in the fall but has extended to a full-season renewal.

It’s lucky seven for HGTV, which announced series renewals for seven lifestyle series. They are: Beachfront Bargain Hunt, which earlier this month scored its highest-rated premiere episode ever for the series, as well as Caribbean Life, Island Life, Mexico Life, Island Hunters, Hawaii Life and Beachfront Bargain Hunt Renovation. The network has commissioned a total of 146 fresh episodes for the series in total; new eps are slated to air in 2017.

Chef, restaurateur, television host and author Geoffrey Zakarian is launching production and development shingle Corner Table Entertainment, a partnership between Zakarian Hospitality and Key Group Worldwide. The NY-based company will produce scripted and unscripted food and lifestyle projects for TV and digital distribution. Zakarian appears in front of the camera on Food Network, serving for the past decade as Iron Chef, a judge on Chopped, co-host of The Kitchen and host of primetime series Cooks vs Cons. Key Group Worldwide founder Jaret Keller is a former New Line Cinema exec.

Sonar Entertainment has entered into a first-look deal with Jordan Peele’s production company Monkeypaw Productions. The new agreement encompasses all content for television, including digital. Monkeypaw produced the Emmy-winning Key & Peele on Comedy Central for its five-season run; next up will be the Tracy Morgan comedy series for TBS, set for production later this year.

Justice Network CEO Steve Schiffman explains how doing good has been good for business, in the new Cynsiders. Schiffman will be on hand for next week’s Social Good Awards in NYC, to present the Legacy Award for John Walsh, founder of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Details are here.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

On Sunday, March 12 at 8p, Guy Fieri will bring back 16 of the greatest Triple-G winners to compete on a five-week special competition of Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games: Supermarket Masters Tournament. One chef will advance in each round of the tournament, winning $10,000 and a spot in the final episode. The four finalists who make it to the grand finale will face off for a shot at the biggest final shopping spree in the show’s history – $25,000.

Collector car archeologist Wayne Carini has never given up on the chase, and he returns to Velocity for a ninth season of Chasing Classic Cars, debuting Wednesday, March 15 at 9p. The new season gets a jump-start with a one-hour premiere featuring an exceptional chase for a one-of-one, all-original 1930 Minerva bodied by Hibbard & Darrin just north of Saranac Lake, NY in the Adirondack Mountains.

Investigation Discovery is teaming with filmmaker Joe Berlinger to present Killing Richard Glossip, premiering Monday, April 17 and Tuesday, April 18 at 9p. The docu-series provides a window to two men who were convicted of murder nearly 20 years ago and have been in prison since. Justin Sneed, who admitted to killing the victim, cut a deal for a life sentence instead of risking the death penalty by telling the police that Richard Glossip hired him to do it; Glossip has maintained his innocence but was sentenced to death. The camera will follow the case during what could be the final days of Glossip’s life.

FX announced season 3 of its limited series Fargo will premiere Wednesday, April 19 at 10p. The new installment is set in 2010 and features Ewan McGregor (in dual roles), Carrie Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and David Thewlis.
