IN THE NEWS
Television offered a ray of hope in a bleak study released Monday by the Media, Diversity and Social Change Initiative at USC, which examined diversity in 109 films released by major studios in 2014 and 305 scripted series. While “overall, the landscape of media content is still largely whitewashed,” concludes the study, “there are pockets of promise in television. There is a focus that change is possible.” On the down side, broadcast TV directors were the least diverse, with a rate of 90.4 percent white.
Ted Cruz asked for the resignation of Communications Director Rick Tyler, who represented the GOP candidate’s campaign on TV news shows, after Tyler distributed a video that inaccurately characterized Marco Rubio as disparaging the bible. Although Tyler deleted and apologized for the post, Cruz, already tarnished by allegations of dirty trickery, said, “We are not a campaign that is going to question the faith of another candidate.” MSNBC was about to go live with Tyler yesterday when he abruptly left the studio, said host Kate Snow on air, adding, “Now we know why.”
Alex Trebek may be the only on-camera Canadian on Jeopardy! for a while. Thanks to a change in online privacy laws, Trebek’s Canuck countrymen are barred from applying to be contestants. “As international laws governing how information is shared over the Internet are ever-changing and complex, we are currently investigating how we can accept registrations from potential Canadian contestants,” said the quiz show’s producers in a statement. “We are making every effort to find a solution before the next round of testing.”
Fusion struck a multi-year deal with All Def Digital to broadcast the All Def Movie Awards, starting with a one-hour broadcast on Oscars Sunday, February 28 at 7p. Fusion and ADD will also feature content from the event across their respective digital and social platforms, including Fusion’s Snapchat Discover channel. These aren’t your grandma’s awards – categories include Best Bad Muh F**ka, Best Helpful White Person and Best Black Survivor in a Movie. The awards were inspired in part by ADD weekly stand-up showcase All Def Comedy Live.
Exclusive: TiVo’s State of TV Report for 4Q15 found that time-shifting continues to vary considerably across the five major broadcast nets. CW has the most time-shifted primetime viewership (78 percent), followed by CBS (64 percent), ABC (63 percent), Fox (56 percent) and NBC (52 percent). Most time-shifted in cable were Bravo (69 percent), BBC America and AMC (60 percent), FX (59 percent) and Syfy (58 percent).
TiVo’s study also ranked the top broadcast programs by Live+4 to Live+7 incremental commercial rating increase. Top five were Fox’s Minority Report (15 percent), followed by 14 percent increases for Fox’s Gotham and CW’s The Flash, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. As for late night viewership, TiVo looked at NBC, CBS and Comedy Central, the networks with the most churn, and found that most late-night viewers choose a show based on the host, not the show itself. For a copy of the report email info@tivoresearch.com.
The Simpsons released a short video about the presidential campaign, in which Marge has a panic attack after watching the candidates debate. (“It’s just like when you have a bad dream, except this is real, and will probably ruin your life,” Homer tells the kids.) “The Debateful Eight” video is here.
Fans played director on Saturday, helping create the promo campaign for the 2016 MTV Movie Awards. Show hosts Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart interacted with fans across Facebook Live, YouTube, Periscope, Meerkat and YouKnow, for promo footage airing across linear, digital and social platforms. The livestream generated 4 million streams with almost 2 million tuning in live; awards show tapes April 9 to air Sunday, April 10 at 8p.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
With pint-sized chefs gobbling ratings (MasterChef Junior, Kids Baking Championship) it should come as a no surprise that Spike and Nickelodeon have teamed with Lip Sync Battle’s Casey Patterson Entertainment and Matador to develop Lip Sync Battle Jr. The special, a spinoff of the Spike hit, will air later this year on both nets. Meanwhile, sister Viacom brands are developing special editions of Lip Sync Battle events. “On the long list of wonderful surprises about Lip Sync Battle is our family co-viewing,” said exec producers Casey Patterson and Jay Peterson. “Lip Sync Battle’s multigenerational appeal is our favorite part of the show.”
Raycom Media and The E.W. Scripps Company are forming a development partnership to create and grow new and original programming across daytime, early fringe and access dayparts. The partnership will also develop content for the companies’ digital products. Combined reach is 29 percent of U.S. households. “Partnering with other broadcast groups rather than competing against them is a dynamic new way to succeed in this industry,” said Brian Lawlor, SVP of the Scripps broadcast division.
IFC gave the green light to two scripted comedies. In Stan Against Evil, from creator/writer Dana Gould and 3 Arts Entertainment, a former sheriff and his replacement battle demons. Funny or Die adaptation Brockmire stars Hank Azaria as a disgraced MLB announcer attempting a small-town comeback. Stan is slated for a fall premiere, while Brockmire is set to launch in early 2017. “Demons and disgrace are at the forefront of IFC’s new comedy strategy,” joked IFC president Jennifer Caserta.

RETURNING SERIES
Deadliest Catch is back for season 12 on Discovery with a new generation of fisherman, including the youngest captain ever – but vet Sig Hansen, for one, is not impressed. “When I look around at the new guys, there is a lot of opportunity but not a lot of promise,” said Hansen, captain of the F/V Northwestern. “At sea, you find out what a guy is made out of. Not everyone makes the cut.” See who does prove themselves worthy starting Tuesday, March 29 at 9p.
Season five of DIY’s Salvage Dawgs debuts Sunday, February 28 at 9p and 9:30p. Fourth run of the series focused on an architectural salvage business saw ratings gains of 40 percent in the P25-54 demo versus season three.
BRANDS & ADVERTISING
TV ad spending was up 1 percent in January, according to Standard Media Index, thanks to a 9 percent increase for broadcast nets. The picture wasn’t as pretty for cable and syndication, each down 3 percent. “Improved ratings, driven by the outstanding performance of the NFL, have delivered healthy growth for major broadcasters, even with a slight dip in ratings for the month,” said James Fennessy, SMI’s CEO. “Cable hasn’t been as fortunate as revenue declines are tracking closely with softer ratings.” Bucking the cable trend: TBS, HGTV and Freeform, all up double digits.
Smart brands are changing their tune when it comes to engaging the youngest viewers and consumers. “Marketing will have to be more honest and direct if brands want to gain the attention of Generation Z,” says Becky Murdy, director Octagon Digital. “We won’t be discussing viralness, selfies or millennials in boardrooms moving forward; we will be talking about attention spans, cinematic photography and incognito social media platforms.” For more expert insights from Murdy, as well as panelists from AMC, Convince & Convert, redpepper and ShareThis, you’ll want to sign up for the March 1 Cynopsis webinar, New Social Media Strategies to Reach the Young Demos. Details are here.
