IN THE NEWS

Science Channel is going live for the finale of MythBusters: The Search on Saturday, February 25 at 9p, when the next generation of myth busters will be revealed. The series debuted on Discovery Channel in 2003 and ended its 14-year run last year. The four contestants left standing for the new iteration will learn whether they’ve made the final cut in a show originating from Jersey City’s Liberty Science Center.

Fox renewed The Mick for a 13-episode season 2. “From the earliest stages of development, all of us at Fox had enormous faith in The Mick, and it hasn’t disappointed,” said David Madden, entertainment president. The series is averaging about 1.0 among A18-49, and 8 million multiplatform viewers.

Scripps Networks Interactive reported a record consolidated ad revenues of $2.4 billion in 2016, up 17.2%, with U.S. ad revenue passing $2 billion for the first time. Scripps CEO Kenneth Lowe attributed the performance to “our relentless focus on operational execution and the deliberate investment we’ve made in programming, international businesses and in Scripps Lifestyle Studios.” A fourth quarter drop in consolidated income was attributed a noncash goodwill write-down of $57.9 million.

After President Trump labeled the news divisions at ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and the New York Times “the enemy of the American people,” SAG-AFTRA weighed in. “SAG-AFTRA believes first and foremost that citizens in a democracy need the truth,” said the union in a statement. “Furthermore, SAG-AFTRA believes that journalists have an obligation to monitor and question those in power, pointing out wrongdoing when they find it, noting when facts asserted are not supported by evidence, and reporting inconsistencies in the positions of public figures.”

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters his boss has “a healthy respect for the press,” and that certain outlets had “gone out of their way to not be completely accurate and fair in their coverage of what’s going on.”

There has been a lot of talk about fake news. Do you think the mainstream media can be relied on to report news accurately? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll:

Georgia King (Vice Principals) will star in ABC comedy pilot Raised by Wolves, based on a UK series, centered on a tough mother struggling to raise her five eccentric kids.

ADVERTISING

Omnicom Media Group scored the best net new business number (total wins minus total losses, excluding retentions), with $4.4 billion in estimated billings for 2016, according to a report from RECMA. GroupM had the highest win total at $5.7 billion, offset by losses of almost $6.7 billion. The report covers over 900 account pitches globally.

Simulmedia and IRI formed a strategic alliance enabling CPG marketers to activate IRI ProScores with Simulmedia on linear TV to target ads to consumers based on purchase behavior rather than traditional demographic data. “Marketers now have the ability to use consistent purchase-based segments not just for digital activation but also for television,” said Srishti Gupta, president of IRI Media Center for Excellence. “This will drive greater efficiency and effectiveness for TV dollars, which continues to be a significant percentage of total advertising spend.”

One highly effective solution to ad-blocking: branded content. But it has to be done right. “Successful branded content has to leverage the authenticity of both brands  the advertiser’s brand AND the media brand or environment  to create entertaining and engaging content that consumers can act on,”says Laura Galietta, SVP of ad sales marketing and branded entertainment for Scripps Networks Interactive (ranked by ad execs in a Beta Research study among the best for providing creative/innovative multiplatform opportunities). “You succeed by weaving together real, relatable stories,” adds Deb Puchalla, SVP of Scripps’ digital food brands. “Start with what if, move on to how, and at every step remind the audience why it matters.” Learn more from Galietta and Puchalla, as well as experts from Discovery, ESPN, The Weather Channel and BEN at the February 28 webinar, Winning Strategies for Branded Content. You can register here.

Google announced that the Media Rating Council will audit the way measurement companies Metrics, Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify collect data on YouTube. The independent audit of third party viewability reporting integrations “is a positive step forward for marketers,” said Association for National Advertisers president Bob Liodive. “This action from Google …demonstrates their commitment to partnering with us to deliver this goal.” The move follows Facebook’s announcement that it will undergo auditing by the MRC.
