IN THE NEWS

Legislators might want to think twice before cutting funding for public television. A phone survey taken in January by a bipartisan team from American Viewpoint and Hart Research Associates for public TV indicated 62% of Republican voters and 83% of Democrats do not think federal funding should be eliminated. “Voters see public television as a good value proposition for the American taxpayer,” wrote the pollsters.

President Trump’s attacks haven’t hurt CNN, CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker told journalists last week. Not that there wasn’t enough concern, as CNN at times bore the brunt of Trump’s anti-media rants, to commission a study to see if the president’s “fake news” charges impacted CNN’s reputation. The result: less than a third of Americans surveyed thought CNN’s coverage of Trump had been unfair, and considerably more respondents trusted the brand more than Trump or members of Congress. CNN “has been as strong as it has ever been,” said Zucker, with its most profitable year ever in 2016 and on pace to exceed that in 2017. According to iSpot.tv, CNN earned $72.8 million in national advertising from January 16-February 16, versus $33.5 million during the same period last year.

Fox News Channel may be friendlier to Trump than other outlets, but that doesn’t mean some FNC journalists aren’t calling foul on what they consider out-of-bounds behavior. Chris Wallace took issue with Trump’s tweeted assertion that the media was “the enemy of the American people” during an interview with Rance Priebus, who said on Fox News Sunday that the media was flooded with “garbage,” and journalists should focus on positive stories about the administration. “We don’t have state-run media in this country,” Wallace told the White House Chief of Staff. “That’s what they have in dictatorships.” And the same day Zucker made his remarks about the “fake news” survey, came support from FNC’s  Shepard Smith for CNN’s Jim Acosta. Smith called Acosta “an accomplished reporter,” who Trump was “treating iike…I’m not even going to use the word….It’s crazy what we’re watching.”

Real or fake? Donald Trump is hardly the first politician to be critical of media coverage. Whether or not you think Trump goes too far in his attacks, do you believe the news media can be trusted? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/

Sprout introduced a music video, “Kindness Is a Muscle,” featuring 10-year-old dance sensation Aidan Prince (aka BAHBOY) as part of its “Kindness Counts” pro-social initiative. “Kindness is at the heart of everything we do at Sprout,” said Jennifer Giddens, SVP, marketing & digital. “‘Kindness is a Muscle’ showcases how kids have the opportunity to lead the kind effort by exercising compassionate and kind actions daily, empowering and reminding us all to do better.”

A group of smaller networks, among them Up Entertainment, ASPiRE, INSP and Outdoor Channel, share the concerns of the American Cable Association over how the transition to the ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard will affect MVPDs. In a letter to the FCC, the networks said, “We believe our respective programming services can compete with any in the market on the merits. Yet we also recognize that, as programmers unaffiliated with the largest conglomerates, our offerings will be at particular risk should the transition to ATSC 3.0 compel MVPDs to eliminate cable channels. As explained by ACA, ‘independent programmers would likely be the first to go’ in systems where capacity is limited.” The letter urged the FCC to examine the potential impact on diverse and independent programmers. A vote on the issue is scheduled at the FCC on February 23.

It appears Dalian Wanda’s $1 billion acquisition of Dick Clark Productions won’t go through, reported TheWrap on Monday. Problems getting currency out of China and Chinese regulatory issues were cited as the cause, though a source told TheWrap owner Eldridge Industries still expects the deal to close.
