IN THE NEWS

The curtain shows no signs of dropping on the live televised musical. NBC will pick up on the success of its latest entry, The Wiz Live, with Hairspray Live, set to air Wednesday, December 7 at 8p. Director Kenny Leon, choreographer Jerry Mitchell and script adaptor Harvey Fierstein join original songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for a Tony Award-heavy behind the scenes posse.

History is out to prove truth is funnier than fiction. The network on Thursday, February 25 at 11:30p is launching Night Class, a late-night comedy block featuring talent including Jack Black, Dana Carvey, Nick Kroll, Aubrey Plaza, Sarah Silverman and Jason Sudeikis. The block, which puts a humorous spin on real facts, will debut with three original short-form comedy series: time-hopping Great Minds With Dan Harmon, featuring Black, as Ludwig Van Beethoven; Crossroads of History, a look at unknown moments that have shaped the world created by Elizabeth Shapiro; and How To Lose the Presidency, an assemblage of embarrassing presidential moments caught on camera, produced by Red Marble Media.

Silicon Valley scored yesterday in its debate against pay TV distributors and studios with the FCC’s most recent “Unlock the Box” rule-making aimed at dispersing the control cable and satellite companies have over customers’ set-top boxes. Currently 99 percent of pay TV subscribers lease their boxes from service providers. FCC chair Tom Wheeler said of the vote, which came down on partisan lines, that competition would help reduce customer fees and ease their ability to access programming delivered over the Internet.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

VH1 gave the greenlight to a one-hour scripted series inspired by Star Jones’ 2011 book Satan’s Sisters. Set in the bright lights of daytime television, it’s the story of The Lunch Hour – a long-running, popular ladies’ talk show in which alliances are forged, careers are made, and bridges are burned. Slated for a 2017 premiere, the series is exec-produced by Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva), Star Jones, Suzanne DePasse (The Temptations) & Madison Jones and Susan Levison.  Writers are Amy Engelberg and Wendy Engelberg, who also serve as executive producers.  The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television.

Craig William Macneill (The Boy) will direct all six episodes of new Syfy limited series Channel Zero: Candle Cove, set to premiere in October. The first installment of Channel Zero is based on Kris Straub’s creepy Internet tome about a man’s growing suspicions that a kids TV program from the ‘80s may have played a big role in a series of deadly events from his childhood.

NEW SERIES

Investigation Discovery and Emmy Award-winning journalist Tony Harris are teaming up again with civil rights advocacy organization, the Southern Poverty Law Center to produce Hate In America. Docu-series, which bows Monday, February 29 at 8p, showcases the SPLC’s efforts to combat bigotry and hate groups in the US. First ep is titled The Klan on Trial.

truTV is moving ahead on shortform comedy series Late Night Snack, featuring Alec Baldwin and Esther Povitsky. The 10-ep series will premiere Thursday, March 3 at 11p. Also new from tru is comedic doc anthology series truInside (previously announced as truOriginals: Inside Iconic Comedy) on Monday, February 29, at 10p. The series delves into the untold tales behind iconic films, clubs and performers. First season will tackle the films Airplane!, Election, Bridesmaids, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Jerk, Tommy Boy, Bull Durham and Heathers, as well as talent breeding grounds The Groundlings and The Comedy Cellar. It’s produced by Left/Right with Banks Tarver, Ken Druckerman, and Anneka Jones and Michael LaHaie serving as co-executive producers.

FYI’s new docuseries Bride & Prejudice, which follows three star-crossed couples who desperately want to get married despite disapproval from family members, has a new premiere date  Tuesday, March 15 at 9p. The show was previously slated for a March 8 debut.

UP is going big with new series Small Town, Big Mayor, which premieres Thursday, March 31 at 9:30p. The subject of the series is John Henry Berry, mayor of D’Lo, Mississippi – complete with one town hall, one masonic lodge, 240 cows, three swimming holes, 74 rocking chairs, three churches, a bonafide World War II veteran and 456 residents  and his quest to revitalize his beloved town.

RETURNING SHOWS

The wait is over. BBC America will bring back Peabody Award-winning clone drama Orphan Black for a fourth season on Thursday, April 14 at 10p. The new season sees Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) returning home from her Icelandic hideout to track down an elusive new ally tied to deceased clone Beth (Maslany), whose identity Sarah stole in the series’ first episode.

The men of Cowboys4Angels return for sixth season of Showtime’s Gigolos on March 17. Series chronicles the lives of five of the service’s top earners from Las Vegas hotel suites to suburban bedrooms.

"More widespread ad blockers come as good news to anyone who’s ever been chased around the Internet for months with the same static retargeting ad after a careless product click," says Giles Goodwin, CEO of creative management platform Flite. The solution? "Marketers need to get personal." Read more in the new Cynsiders: http://www.cynopsis.com/cyncity/an-ad-blocking-neutralizer-one-to-one-engagement/
