CYNOPSISSPORTS
02.18.15

Good morning. It’s Wednesday February 18, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

While the world awaits word on Manny and Floyd, boxing continued to take the spotlight as CBS Sports and Showtime Sports detailed a multi-year joint venture that will bring live bouts to CBS Television Network. Premier Boxing Champions on CBS will see eight live events this year, with the first slated for April 4 at 3p. The program will air in conjunction with high-profile Showtime Championship Boxing events as part of a partnership designed to cross-promote the live programs across multiple platforms with each event on both channels supported with short- and long-form shoulder programming and marketing support. The debut episode on CBS will see light heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson defending his WBC title against former super middleweight champ Sakio Bika.

ON THE AIR

Let’s start off with radio today, as NBC Sports Group announced plans to offer live radio coverage of all three Triple Crown races for the first time on NBC Sports Radio. For each race, NBC Sports Radio will present two hours of live coverage from 5-7p, produced in partnership with Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN), and distributed by Westwood One.“We are excited to extend NBC’s award-winning coverage of the ‘Sport of Kings’ to the radio airwaves,” saidRob Simmelkjaer, Senior Vice President of NBC Sports Ventures. “NBC Sports Radio listeners all around the nation can now join our millions of TV viewers to enjoy the drama of these great races.”

Meanwhile, Derek Jeter is bringing his brand to SiriusXM, with the company inking a deal with Jeter’s new platform The Players’ Tribune to form a new national radio show “that brings the high profile new athlete-inspired media platform founded by Derek Jeter to the airwaves, showcasing the voices of athletes associated with the site and connecting them with listeners around the country.” The series bows on Feb. 18 and run on Wednesdays from 7-8p with a rotating group of hosts and guests who are Players’ Tribune editors or contributors that include the likes of Jeter, Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and more.

Kristen Balboni officially joined FOX Sports as host of its daily social media series @TheBuzzer, while also contributing elsewhere at FOX Sports 1. The series recently scored its best month ever, collectively averaging more than 37 million video views in January, and has become FOX Sports’ most-consumed content on mobile devices.

IndyCar Series topper Mark Miles used the sport’s media day to detail a new scheduling plan of action, less than a month after the season opener was cancelled. Miles told reporters that he is looking for a slate of more races designed to begin and end between football seasons with less scheduling conflicts with NASCAR. "We know that in the past whatever our average ratings declined 30% after Labor Day and we know why," said he said, noting that a 20(ish)-race docket that launches following the Super Bowl in February and wraps up on Labor Day weekend would work well for the sport. He also noted that the organization is chatting with media partners ABC and NBC Sports Network about dropping the exclusive rights clauses in the deals.

Speaking of racing, FOX Sports’ Bash at the Beach hits its second straight year ahead of the Daytona 500 and will run as a one-hour primetime special on Saturday at 9p. The program is sponsored by Budweiser and Geico and hosted by driver Clint Bowyer and co-hosted by Jamie Little, Molly McGrath and Jenny Taft. Musical performances include Little Big Town and feature American Idol winner Phillip Phillips with appearances from the likes of former NASCAR champions Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart, as well as Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, and Kasey Kahne.

Continuing the theme, Mexican drivers German Quiroga and Daniel Suarez are joining FOX Deportes for its third season of NASCAR Sprint Cup, beginning with the Daytona 500 on Sunday at 1p. Quiroga joins the broadcast booth as an analyst alongside longtime FOX Deportes race announcer Tony Rivera and analyst Luis Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Suarez serves as the host of the network’s first NASCAR Digital Series, which is set to premiere in time for the race and provide social and video content to audiences throughout the season.

How do you become future-proof? Which programs are most easily monetized? What is the right mix of interactions, engagement and commerce you need to succeed? Find out at the Social Media & Sports: Engagement and Tune In Strategies on Tuesday, February 24. Leading the discussion will be Nick Freeman, VP of Sales Integration for Fox Sports Digital; Jeramie McPeek, VP of Digital for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns; and OneUp Sports’ Founder and CEO Daren Trousdel.
