ADVERTISING

A white paper examining the state of cross-platform attribution and ROI analysis, commissioned by the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement in conjunction with the 4As and written by Sequent Partners, was one of the topics at CIMM’s measurement and data summit on Thursday. “It is critical that data is suitable to your business,” said Jim Spaeth, co-founder of Sequent. “Ask a lot of questions, and demand transparency.” Characteristics of a best-practice solution, according to the white paper, include:

* Provide sufficiently granular and timely detail to enable marketing plans to be optimized mid-course

* Employ a statistical model that can infer causality for all the elements of a marketing plan

*Incorporate a baseline, as well as all the drivers of consumer purchase behavior that could account for any variance in sales or other outcome variables

* Employ data for all variables that is truly representative of the brand’s business

“You have to take more responsibility,” said Spaeth, “and make sure the data works for your brand.”

Rino Scanzoni, executive chairman and CEO, Midas Exchange and Modi Media, GroupM, spoke at the event about working with both comScore and Nielsen to move measurement forward. “Competition is critical,” said Scanzoni. “If we rely on one provider, we’ll always be behind the 8-ball.” As for Facebook’s commitment to be audited by the Media Rating Council, Scanzoni approved, noting, “You can’t grade your own homework.”

Kantar Media’s audio watermarking technology for binding Ad-IDs to commercials and Entertainment ID Registry codes to programming content has been selected to advance to the next stage of review by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.  “This first advancement for efficiently and reliably binding IDs to media assets via an open standard audio watermark is truly revolutionary,” said Jane Clarke, CEO and managing director, CIMM. “The importance of this to the media industry and its potential for spurring further innovation is a much-needed next step in bringing both content creators and advertisers closer to securing a faster and more accurate view of audience engagement across all devices.”

Market research firm IRI partnered with Simulmedia to help CPG marketers better target consumers on linear TV through actual purchase behaviors rather than traditional demographic data, a first for the industry. The alliance will allow brands to drive greater efficiency and effectiveness.
