Isn’t that special: NBC’s Saturday Night Live 40thAnniversary Special was the net’s highest-rated prime time entertainment telecast since 2006’s Will & Grace finale and its most-watched since 2004 (excluding post-Super Bowl shows). In fast nationals, the special delivered a 7.8/21 among A18-49 and 23.1 million viewers. Along with 7p red carpet coverage (Jim Carrey to Matt Lauer: “Where are you hiding Brian Williams?”), the night’s average was 6.6/19 and 20.1 million total viewers.

IN THE NEWS

It’s not the farthest remote-happy Conan has traveled, but it’s a first: the late night TBS talker was taping in Havana over the weekend. An episode set for March 4 will be the first late night show filmed in Cuba since the 1962 embargo.

TBS’s Ground Floor won’t make it to season three. The workplace comedy, which aired what turned out to be its series finale on February 10, joins Men at Work and Sullivan & Son on the cancellation pile.

Comedy net LAFF, launching April 15, landed broadcast TV rights to sitcoms The Drew Carey Show, Night Court, Ellen, Empty Nest and Grace Under Fire. Owned and operated by Katz Broadcasting, LAFF will be available in 35 percent of the country via distribution agreements with ABC Owned Television Stations and E.W. Scripps Company stations, with additions TBA.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on Sunday made headlines with two stories, one about tobacco companies’ aggressive marketing overseas, including advertising directed at children (the show shipped “Jeff the Diseased Lung in a Cowboy Hat” t-shirts to Togo), and a “How Is This Still a Thing?” segment marveling at the continued popularity of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. “Sure, at one point it was tantalizing to receive a once-annual printed magazine of scantily clad women,” said Oliver, “but do people not understand you can now just type ‘naked ladies’ into the Internet and see what Google throws at them?”

Just as marketers are getting a handle on Millennials, along comes Generation Edge. This younger group, born 1995 and later, “is markedly different from Millennials in that while they are tech innate, they are less likely to share everything online,” says  Bill Carter, partner at Fuse marketing, specialists in the demo. “This will continue to be a challenge for how marketers can reach them.” Carter is among the experts offering strategies and insights for connecting with elusive Gen Edgers (aka Gen Z) in the Cynopsis webinar, Generation Edge: Catching the New Wave of Viewers coming up Thursday, February 26. BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Cable continues to creep up on broadcast when it comes to prime time upfront dollars, according to media consulting company Media Dynamics, reported in MediaPost. While spending grew 11 percent in the last five upfronts, cable was up 29 percent, versus a 1 percent rise for broadcast. And then there’s digital competing for a piece of the pie. “The 2015-16 season should be the most significant upfront in years,” said Media Dynamics president Ed Papazian, “and possibly a tipping point for traditional TV’s dominance.”

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Dish Network and Epix struck a deal for a multi-year carriage renewal, including Epix channels on Dish’s new Sling TV streaming service. “Our customers crave the newest movies like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Transformers: Age of Extinction,” said Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch, “but they also have a growing appetite for the classics and Epix delivers both. Sling TV will feature Epix’s linear channels and movies on-demand in an add-on package that is accessible and affordable.”
