IN THE NEWS
Shareholders approved Time Warner’s $85 billion deal to sell itself to AT&T. “By combining Time Warner’s leading brands and video content with AT&T’s distribution, we will accelerate our ability to innovate, develop and deliver the next generation of video services,” said CEO Jeff Bewkes. Next hurdle: Justice Department anti-trust officials. Bewkes told shareholders distributors would have “non-discriminatory access to all our networks.”
CBS is close to a two-year renewal deal for hit comedy The Big Bang Theory, now in its tenth season. CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves shared the news during an earnings call Wednesday. Moonves also said CBS Corp. has a distribution deal with Verizon covering CBS, Showtime, the CW and other properties “on terms consistent” with its long-term retrans revenue goal” of $2.5 billion by 2020.
Count writer-director Richard Curtis and the cast of his 2003 holiday film, Love Actually, in on Red Nose Day. Short film Red Nose Day Actually will air as part of Comic Relief’s May 25 Red Nose Day Special on NBC and March 24’s Red Nose Day special in on UK’s BBC1. Revisiting their roles from the movie are Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Colin Firth, Lucia Moniz, Liam Neeson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Olivia Olson, Bill Nighy, Marcus Brigstocke and Rowan Atkinson.
With cable news largely focused yesterday morning on reports of interactions between Donald Trump aides and Russian intelligence during the presidential campaign, it appeared the president was channel-surfing. “The fake news media is going crazy with their conspiracy theories and blind hatred,” tweeted Trump early Monday morning. “@MSNBC & @CNN are unwatchable. @foxandfriends is great!”
Trump wasn’t the only one talking about fake news. We might not be seeing Trump senior advisor Kellyanne Conway on MSNBC’s Morning Joe anytime soon, if Mika Brzezinski has her way. Said the co-host on Tuesday, “We know for a fact that she tries to get herself booked on this show. I won’t do it because I don’t believe in fake news.”
Do you think Kellyanne Conway should be banned from a news show, or do viewers have the right to hear what a senior White House official has to say? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Seventy-six percent of viewers skip video ads when they can out of habit, according to a study from IPG Mediabrands’ Magna and Media Lab. And “not only do the majority skip ads, but they do so right away,” said the report.
One solution to ad-skipping is branded content- if it’s done right. “The process of creating branded content, that brands want to be a part of, needs to feel like a conversation,” says Sandra Szahun, VP sales marketing for The Weather Channel, and a Cynopsis TV Award winner for best brand integration. “The days of ‘this is what we’re doing and here’s how you (brand) can fit in,’ are largely over. Media companies need to listen well and bring the brand marketers in to create pieces that feel natural to the platform, resonate with viewers and are born from collaboration.” Szahun is one of 6 experts on hand to offer insights and case studies in the February 28 Cynopsis webinar, Winning Strategies for Branded Content.
