Good morning. It’s Tuesday February 14, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Univision is hitting Facebook Live with a slate of Liga MX matches, courtesy of a new deal. Content will see the platform serve up English-language games starting Feb. 18 and running throughout 2017 in real-time on the Univision Deportes Facebook Page and one Facebook’s Video tab. Overall, 46 Liga MX matches including playoff games will be carried this year on Facebook Live.

“We’re thrilled Univision is bringing Liga MX matches to Facebook,” said Dan Reed, Facebook Head of Global Sports Partnerships. “The move enables Facebook’s passionate community of soccer fans to watch, share, talk about and react to one of the sport’s most exciting leagues – all in one location. We are also committed to supporting Univision Deportes as it explores innovative ways to complement its television broadcasts. By delivering unique broadcasts via Facebook Live, Univision Deportes is able to further reach new audiences in a truly interactive and social manner.”

ON THE AIR

FOX Sports detailed its 2017 Daytona Speedweeks broadcast plans, which will see around 100 hours of multi-platform programming on its platforms, wrapping up with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 26 at 2p. Programming includes The Clash at Daytona, Cam-Am Duel at Daytona, as well as the NASCAR Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series. The Daytona 500 brings back Darrell Waltrip beside Jeff Gordon with veteran play-by-play announcer Mike Joy, while Larry McReynolds offers race analysis. Pit reporters are set to Jamie Little, Chris Neville, Vince Welch and Matt Yocum. Chris Myers hosts FOX NASCAR Sunday. FOX Sports’ Daytona Speedweeks coverage revs up on Feb. 17 at 5p with practice for The Clash at Daytona.

Meanwhile, FOX Sports also announced that Shannon Spake will serve as co-host on NASCAR Race Hub. Spake replaces Danielle Trotta and joins Adam Alexander on the program, which runs Monday-Thursday at 6p on FS1.

HBO Sports, WWE and the Bill Simmons Media Group are bringing the late, great Andre the Giant back into the spotlight, announcing a documentary film about the WWE legend. The film will explore Andre’s upbringing in France, his celebrated career in WWE and his forays in the entertainment world.

ESPN announced the addition of ABC News’ Ryan Smith to Outside the Lines and E:60. In addition to contributing as a host to both shows, he will report feature stories and investigative pieces while providing legal analysis.

ESPN is mixing up its talent via PlayStation Vue Crossover, featuring basketball doubleheaders on ESPN and ESPN2 on tomorrow with a blend of NBA and college basketball analysts on the call of each game. Programming begins at 7p on ESPN with the Cavaliers/Pacers featuring Dick Vitale and Bill Walton on the call, joined by Dave Pasch and reporter Lisa Salters. ESPN3 will feature a secondary feed of the game telecast that includes a camera solely dedicated to Vitale, Walton and Pasch throughout the game. Later, the Knicks/Thunder contact will see NFL Insider Adam Schefter working his first game as an NBA reporter, joining Ryan Ruocco and analysts Dan Dakich and Jeff Van Gundy. The college doubleheader begins at 7p on ESPN2 as Dave O’Brien, analysts P.J. Carlesimo and Kara Lawson and reporter Holly Rowe taking on Iowa State/Kansas State. Later, Duke/Virginia sees karl Ravech,  analysts Jay Bilas and Doug Collins, plus reporter Maria Taylor on the call.

NBA All-Star festivities will once again see a slew of partner activations, including first-time participation from the likes of ExxonMobil, Jack Daniel’s, Marriott and Shock Doctor. Speaking of the NBA, the Utah Jazz locked in its first jersey sponsor, announcing a deal with Qualtrics. However, instead of the company logo on the patch, the company will instead leverage its in-house charity, "5 For The Fight," which raises money for cancer research.

Rubicon Talent announced a strategic partnership with tech, health and sports focused venture capital firm, SeventySix Capital, led by Wayne Kimmel and Jon Powell. “At SeventySix Capital, we are investors in the consumer tech, sports, and health and wellness space with current portfolio companies like Whistle Sports, Indiegogo and StartUp Health,” said Kimmel.  “Rubicon Talent’s relationships, expertise and access allows us to further dive into the sports and entertainment worlds. This is a win-win relationship — the possibilities are endless with our shared goals and vision.”

UFC announced the results of an economic impact analysis following UFC 205: ALVAREZ vs. McGREGOR, which took place in November at Madison Square Garden. Research concluded that the landmark event saw $37.4 million in economic output and $18.3 million in salaries and wages to the city and state of New York and generated $1.6 million in taxes. “Mixed martial arts competitions have already proven to be major economic drivers across New York, and the jobs and revenue generated by this event illustrates the enormous impact of this growing industry in our state," said Governor Cuomo. "I look forward to seeing the further growth of this sport continue to foster economic activity, help create jobs, and further establish New York as an international entertainment hub."

DIGITAL & STREAMING

International Speedway Corporation inked a partnership with ISM, a pioneer and leader in sports venue digital activation, to form ISM Vision Powered by BoldVu. Described as “the World’s Largest 360-degree Digital Engagement Venue Network,” the new technology will debut during Speedweeks, beginning Feb. 18 and run through the DAYTONA 500. In addition, ISM Vision Powered by BoldVu® will be employed at all ISC facilities beginning in 2017. ISC’s trackside network of modular, large-format digital video boards will display racing action, along with driver interviews and promotional content, with the initiative also integrated with each track’s and Motor Racing Network’s mobile app.

SIDEARM Sports, a Learfield company providing websites to over 940 collegiate athletic programs, is teaming with Bleachr, a Minneapolis-based digital app developer with patented in-stadium technology. The partnership marks Bleachr’s first foray into college sports and will allow SIDEARM an expanded opportunity to “solidify its dominant digital position in the college space as Bleachr’s best-in-class technology integrates easily into SIDEARM’s already robust native mobile app platform.”

Saturday sees Clippers star Chris Paul host the first-ever Facebook Live-streamed State Farm Neighborhood Sessions at the House of Blues beginning at 11:30p. The concert will feature music producer DJ Khaled along with musician Jon Batiste, and other special guests via the .State Farm Facebook page.

ESPN Digital announced that an average of 112.1 million unique global users per month set a new ESPN record in 2016, marking the company’s largest total ever and up 5% over 2015. In the average month fans spent 7.9 billion minutes using ESPN digital properties worldwide in 2016 with an average minute audience of 160,000 in the U.S. in 2016.

Meanwhile, NBC Sports is touting that the Sunday Night Football on NBC Facebook page ranked tops among all broadcaster NFL-themed pages in public engagement, including reactions, comments and shares, for the 2016-17 NFL season, including through Super Bowl LI. The page racked up more than 16 million engagements.

ESPORTS

The Esports Championship Series announced plans to open its third season of ECS Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with the ECS Open Qualifiers, starting Saturday, followed by ECS Developmental League qualification contest spanning Feb. 28-March 16. Through the ECS Open Qualifier process, four teams from each region will qualify for the ECS Development League, with the other four teams invited by the ECS. The top two teams from North America and Europe will square off against the relegated teams from ECS Season 2 in best-of-five sets. In addition, ECS is bringing back the Community Caster Challenge, allowing rising stars of esports casting to fly to the ECS studio and cast live matches of ECS Season 3.

GINX eSports TV is coming to Israel. The esports network is launching on Partner’s 4GTV app in the country and will also be offered on Partner’s TV service in the coming months. “We are delighted that Partner’s 4G TV App will be the first Israeli platform to launch  GINX eSports TV,” said Michiel Bakker, CEO of GINX eSports TV. “We aim to provide Israel’s fast growing gaming community with an exciting mix of live eSports tournament coverage from the biggest and best events across the globe as well as a host of eSports entertainment formats, news and behind-the-scenes documentaries. We are looking forward to working with Partner to add local Israeli eSports content to our channel.”

Lagardere Sports named two of its senior executives to new leadership positions with Jay Danzi appointed US Chief Operating Officer while Marc Riccio has been named Executive Vice President, U.S. Commercial Sales and Business Development. “As our business has grown, the need for these roles became apparent and Jay and Marc are the perfect people to fill them,” said Andrew N. Minor League Baseball announced that longtime Major League Baseball executive Dan O’Brien Jr. has joined its staff as Senior Executive Advisor to Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner. O’Brien will advise O’Conner on various issues relative to the Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball relationship, Minor League Baseball business opportunities and industry topics relevant to Minor League Baseball’s future.
