IN THE NEWS

Josh Elliott is out at CBS News. Elliott announced on CBSN Friday that it was his last day in the streaming service’s anchor chair, but that he would be working on field assignments for CBS News. Not so, it turns out. “CBS News and Josh Elliott are parting ways,” said a net spokesperson on Monday. “Josh will no longer be reporting for CBS News. We are grateful for his contributions over the last year.” On Friday, the New York Post reported Elliott’s on-air farewell announcement came as a surprise to network brass. Elliott joined CBS in 2016 from NBC Sports; his contract runs until April 2018.

Nick Cannon announced via social media that he is quitting as host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent. “I have loved hosting America’s Got Talent for the last 8 seasons,” posted Cannon, “…but my soul won’t allow me to be in business with corporations that attempt to frown on freedom of speech, censor artists, and question cultural choices.” Cannon said he’d been told by his “team” that the network had considered firing him (though he was not let go) because of jokes he’d told in Showtime special, Stand Up, Don’t Shoot. “I wish AGT and NBC the best in the upcoming season,” said Cannon, “but I cannot see myself returning.”

It’s not just a White House war on the media – now the media is firing at each other. Fox News’ Sean Hannity wasn’t happy with MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough’s criticism of Donald Trump advisor Stephen Miller (“horrendous,” “an embarrassment”), who drew negative reviews after making the rounds defending his boss on Sunday. In a flurry of tweets, Hannity called Morning Joe’s ratings “horrific,” and the host a “pompous arrogant jackass.” The White House director of social media, Dan Scavino, jumped into the fray, linking to Hannity’s ratings mock and tweeting, “Hannity owns Jealous Joe.” Responding to a tweet about the apparent Twitter war, Scarborough said, “A ‘war between’ suggests that I have found it worth my time to respond. I haven’t.”

In related Stephen Miller news, Zach Braff (Scrubs) tweeted to Saturday Night Live exec producer Lorne Michaels, “I will shave my head to play this guy.”

Are cable news hosts fair game for each other, or should lobbing shots be beneath their dignity? Let us know what you think in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Amazon is reportedly considering launching a pay cable channel. The project is in the early planning stages, according to the New York Post, and there are no plans yet for distribution or carriage.

Sesame Workshop yesterday launched the “Sesame Street Writers’ Room,” a 6-week fellowship program aimed at discovering and nurturing writers with diverse voices in children’s media. “Studies show that kids engage and learn more fully when they see themselves reflected onscreen,” noted Brown Johnson, EVP and creative director, Sesame Workshop. “Having a diverse writing team is an important part of the process.”

Dr. Richard Besser is leaving his post as ABC News’ Chief Health and Medical Editor to join the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as president and CEO. Besser, who joined ABC News in 2009, “has been there for everybody in this News Division at our most vulnerable moments, the painful and scary moments, and at those moments when we need a shoulder to cry on,” wrote ABC News president James Goldston in a memo to staff. “I, and I know all of you, will be forever grateful to him.” Besser’s last day is April 3.

Freeform is serving up Monday night “Happy Hours” starting with the returns of comedies Young & Hungry and Baby Daddy on March 13 at 8p and 8:31p, followed on March 20 by the series launch of Bachelor spin-off The Twins: Happily Ever After? At 9:02p.

Branded content is the name of the game these days – and some networks are playing it exceptionally well. Discovery, Scripps and ESPN, ranked 3 of the best by advertising execs in a Beta Research study for providing creative/innovative multi-platform opportunities, and The Weather Channel, which took home a Cynopsis TV Award last week for Best Branded Integration, will be on hand for the February 28 webinar, Winning Strategies for Branded Content. In the midst of a major audience measurement evolution, El Rey is targeting viewers they call Strivers. “These are people who share common values and live by a code to provide for their family, leave their mark, achieve independence, excel at their craft and want to be respected for who they are,” explains net president and GM Daniel Tibbets. For more on Tibbets’ analysis of this surging group, check the latest Cynsiders.
