Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul debuted to a cable premiere record 6.9 million viewers and a 3.4 rating among A18-49 on Sunday. AMC lead-in Walking Dead, back for the second half of its fifth season, drew 15.6 million total viewers and 8.0 among A18-49, even with last year’s midseason bow.

IN THE NEWS

Those rumors that Katie Couric is after NBC News anchor Brian Williams’ job? “Completely untrue,” tweeted Couric on Monday. “Wishing my friends at my former home the best during this tough time.”

Dish’s Sling TV has gone national, adding AMC to a $20/month core package that already included ESPN, TNT, TBS, Food, HGTV, Travel, Cartoon Disney, CNN, El Rey and Galavision. Tacking on an extra $5 will get cord cutters a Sports Extra pack, with additional ESPN nets, Universal Sports, Univision Deportes, beIN Sports and SEC Network. “We believe Sling TV is a game changing service that enhances the existing television landscape,” said CEO Roger Lynch.

The FCC’s proposals for stricter laws governing the Internet had the NY Times questioning whether Comcast’s acquisition of Time Warner Cable, announced a year ago, will make it through regulatory hurdles. “What the F.C.C. is now apparently going to adopt signals a much harder line on their view of the state of competition in the broadband market,” Kevin Werbach, a former F.C.C. counsel and professor at Penn’s Wharton School,” told the paper. “If their view is that the market is not working as it is right now, it’s less likely that they’re going to feel that a combination of two of the largest players is going to be in the public interest.” But the merger still appears likely, said Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson Research, who sets odds at 70-30 that the deal will pass muster.

Animal Planet and AT&T are launching a coast-to-coast search for felines with flair, to appear in the net’s Saturday, May 2 special, America’s Next Cat Star. Viewers can upload head shots and videos of their charismatic kitties at AnimalPlanet.com/AmericasNextCatStar.

The fourth season of ABC Family’s Melissa & Joey will be its last. With the lead characters married and ready to start a family, “It seemed like a natural time” to bring the net’s highest-rated comedy to a close, said Karey Burke, EVP, programming and development. The 100th episode of the comedy airs as the mid-season finale Wednesday, March 18 at 8p.

Top TiVo moments at the 2015 Grammys Sunday night: Madonna’s performance of “Living for Love,” Sam Smith winning Best Pop Vocal Album and Pharrell’s stylized version of his hit, “Happy.”

FremantleMedia International and SundanceTV are partnering to bring Deutschland 83 to the U.S. The eight-parter will be the first German-language drama to air on a major U.S. network.

Weigel Broadcasting is debuting radio station MeTV FM in Chicago, featuring music “deemed oldies by some programmers but considered gold by our target audience.” Think Sweet Baby James, Motown and Song Sung Blue. “MeTV FM on 87.7 allows us to develop a brand extension of our classic TV Network by bringing back the baby boomer’s soundtrack,” Neal Sabin, Vice Chairman, Weigel Broadcasting Co., tells Cynopsis.

Rob Reiner and Andrew Lenchewski (Royal Pains) acquired political satire novel The Global War on Morris to develop as a cable comedy series. Book was inspired by author Steve Israel’s time on the House Armed Services Committee.

COMING UP

Notice something odd on Google Earth? You’re not alone. New Science series What On Earth? focuses on unexplored areas of the planet that are being exposed thanks to the proliferation of satellites. “What on Earth? is a show we could not have made even 10 years ago,” Neil Laird, exec producer, at Science, tells Cynopsis. “Satellites using the highest technology are finding historical treasures that have been buried for centuries. That indelible search to find the answers to some of history’s most perplexing questions is at the heart of this series and will pique the curiosity of every Science Channel viewer.” Series premieres tonight at 9p.

CBS’s soap operas aren’t the net’s only daytime shows getting Valentine’s action this week. On Friday, February 13, Let’s Make a Deal has an audience of single traders and a game of “Let’s Make a Date, while The Price Is Right audience is made up of engaged couples playing for prizes like wedding bands and honeymoons.

Comedian Kevin Hart will serve as Roast Master for Comedy Central’s skewering of Justin Bieber. Noted Comedy’s president of original programming, Kent Alterman, “They say only a good friend would verbally eviscerate another good friend for all his vulnerabilities. Kevin Hart is a very good friend.” Show tapes March 14 to premiere Monday, March 30 at 10p.

Familiar Nickelodeon faces Jace Norman (Henry Danger), Isabela Moner (100 Things to do Before High School), Jack Griffo (The Thundermans) and Tony Cavalero (School of Rock) star in the net’s Splitting Adam. The original movie, about a 15-year-old who accidentally clones himself, bows Monday, February 16 at 7p and will be available for purchase on download-to-own platforms the next day and on Nick.com and the Nick app March 1-15.

Showtime released a teaser for dramedy Happyish, premiering Sunday, April 26 at 9:30p. Star Steve Coogan (Philomena) inhabits the role originally intended for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died February 2, 2014.

RETURNING SERIES

TLC ordered a second helping of My Big Fat Fabulous Life. Season one of the docu-series from Pilgrim Studios, averaging 1.2 million P2+ viewers its first season, ends tonight with back-to-back eps starting at 10p, followed by a half-hour retrospective special, My Big Fat Fabulous Life: The Skinny.

Season four of Discovery’s Bering Sea Gold returns Friday March 13 at 10p. Docu-series from Original Productions brings drama, danger, and the most gold ever in the show’s history.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

In addition to MiniBon giveaways last night, the second night of the Breaking Bad spinoff’s two-night series premiere event, participating bakeries will feature Better Call Saul materials, and participate in a Twitter sweepstakes. The prize: free treats for a year.
