IN THE NEWS

CBS made it official via a Super Bowl spot that the current season seven of The Good Wife will be its last. A statement from Glenn Geller, President, CBS Entertainment and David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios, explained why. “It’s never easy to say goodbye to one of the crown jewels of your network and studio, much less to a show that is among the best on television,” said the execs. “But it also feels very right to end with the seven-year story its creators envisioned, and to celebrate the show’s final run while at the top of its creative game.” Series finale is set for Sunday, May 8.

As for a spin-off of The Good Wife, “Nothing’s off the table,” co-creator Michelle King said in a conference call on Monday. The series is full of  “characters we wish we had more time to explore,” added co-creator Robert King.

ABC ordered a half-hour weekly comedic game show from late night host Jimmy Kimmel, based on a super-fan segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Kimmel is teaming with Banijay Studios North America for Big Fan; Conan O’Brien sidekick Andy Richter is onboard as host. ABC is holding onto its own – Lip Sync Battle started as a segment on NBC’s Tonight Show before it became a breakout hit on Spike TV.

Integrated marketing team Viacom Velocity has launched a weeklong takeover campaign for Deadpool, opening in theaters February 12. The partnership with 20th Century Fox allows all participating shows to air commercial-free. Custom creative featuring Ryan Reynolds breaking the fourth wall, playing up his persona as an irreverent anti-hero, will run on MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, Logo, and Spike. A variety of content will run during takeovers, including 10-second intro spots, and a mix of 30-second and 90-second spots in pods during shows.

Cozi TV spokesperson Antonio Fargas’s role has been expanded. Fargas will now be the voice of all TV promotional materials, starting with the Hart to Hart marathon set for Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14 at noon. ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Budweiser may have plunked down the $5 million it cost for a spot during Super Bowl 50, but the company got its best promotional moments for free. After the Broncos won the big game, Peyton Manning mentioned – twice! –  that to celebrate, he was going to “drink a lot” of Budweiser. “Hi Internet,” tweeted Lisa Weiser, a spokesperson for Anheuser-Busch. “For the record, we did not pay Peyton Manning to mention Budweiser tonight. We are surprised and delighted that he did.” Apex MG Analytics estimated a mention by Manning was worth upwards of $1.6 million. According to Beer Business Daily, Manning owns shares in two Anheuser-Busch distributorships in Louisiana, which could help account for his partiality for the King of Beers.

TiVo announced the most engaging commercials during this year’s Super Bowl: Doritos (“Ultrasound”), Mountain Dew (“PuppyMonkeyBaby”), Taco Bell Quesalupa (“Bigger Than Everything”), Buick Cascada (“That Convertible’s a Buick”) and Pepsi (“The Joy of the Dance”). For the sixth year, TiVo found viewership for the halftime show exceeded that of the overall game.

Subaru’s along for the ride as exclusive sponsor of “On the Trail,” featured every other week on CBS Sunday Morning. Segments follow contributor Conor Knighton as he crosses the country reporting on America’s national parks. Subaru is also the official automotive sponsor of the National Park Services Centennial.

The performer playing Liam Neeson’s younger self in the futuristic Super Bowl spot for LG OLED TV was Neeson’s 20-year-old son by the late Natasha Richardson, Micheal Neeson. In a behind-the-scenes video produced by LG, Neeson called being able to work with his son “absolutely wonderful, quite unique.” Said Micheal, “It’s weird seeing him in a different light to him making me do the dishes.”

DIGITAL DOINGS

Comcast is offering X1 customers Academy Awards-related content ranging from 72 “Best Of” Oscars moments (“You like me!”), via a deal with ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, to every Oscar best picture winner from the past 25 years to rent or own. This year’s awards show takes place Sunday, February 28 on ABC; telecast will be available on demand for Comcast X1 customers through March 2.

AT&T’s Audience Network is launching The Pursuit of Tone, profiling influential guitar players, starting Friday, February 19. Docu-series is a branded partnership with guitar equipment manufacturer Ernie Ball.
