After 13 seasons, The Insider, is ending its run in September. CBS TV Distribution’s newsmagazine, hosted by Debbie Matenopoulos and Louis Aguirre, has long aired as a companion to Entertainment Tonight. The show’s staff was told of the cancellation during a meeting on Tuesday morning.

Fresh off her Super Bowl halftime show performance, Lady Gaga is heading to primetime, on the season premiere of Logo’s RuPaul’s Drag Race. The kickoff episode features a surprise opening and unveils a court of cut-throat queens competing for a $100,000 cash prize and the coveted title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.”

Scripps Networks Interactive was a big winner at last night’s inaugural Cynopsis TV Awards, taking home Best TV Group along with honors for individual networks and series. Nat Geo was another multiple trophy winner, along with VH1, Underground and more. Lesser-known up-and-comers invited to the podium were RFD’s FarmHer and INSP’s State Plate. The crowd got a little rowdy (open bar), adding to the celebratory mood as the industry honored its finest, including outstanding buyers and planners. Special recognition went to two visionary leaders whose gracious, grounded acceptance speeches made clear why they are held in such high esteem: Linda Boff, CMO of GE, and Bill Koenigsberg, president, founder and CEO of Horizon Media.

Noticias Telemundo presents Inmigracion, Trump y los Hispanos (Immigration, Trump and the Hispanic Community), a town hall moderated by Jose Diaz-Balart on Sunday, February 12 at 7p on Telemundo. The special will also be available on Noticias Telemundo’s digital platforms on Facebook and YouTube and the Noticias Telemundo app.

According to TVLine, NBC is mulling over a weekly, 30-minute version of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update. The spinoff, which would feature Colin Jost and Michael Che, would likely air on Thursday nights and debut in the fall.

Ask This Old House completes its 50-state tour with its first-ever visit to the Aloha State. The series has begun shooting segments covering local craftsmanship, organic gardening and solar energy production on the island of Oahu, slated to launch in May on PBS (check local listings.

Tracee Ellis Ross, Mandy Moore, Adam Rodriguez, Rashida Jones, Bill Paxton, Brian White, Deon Cole, Jussie Smollett, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Justin Cornwell, Nick Kroll, Penny Johnson and Pooch Hall were added to list of presenters at the 48th NAACP Image Awards. The all-star celebration, hosted by Anthony Anderson, broadcasts live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium at 9p on February 11 on TV One. A 90-minute pre-show airs live from the red carpet at 7:30p.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBS ordered pilot Living Biblically from The Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki, writer Patrick Walsh (2 Broke Girls). The comedy, based on the book The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs, centers on a modern-day man at a crossroads in his life who decides to live according to the bible.

Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers’ Shondaland and ABC Signature Studios secured the rights to I’m Judging You: The Do Better Manual by Luvvie Ajayi. The book, which instructs people on how to do better, is being developed into a cable comedy series.

Sallie Patrick inked a new two-year overall deal with CBS TV Studios. Under her previous agreement with the studio, Patrick co-wrote the CW pilot Dynasty, a reboot of the primetime soap, with Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

Producer and showrunner Troy Vanderheyden (Don’t Be Tardy, Bad Girls Club) inked a development deal with Wilshire Studios, the unscripted sister studio of Universal Cable Productions. “I’m excited to join the fantastic team at Wilshire Studios to develop their next slate of innovative and impactful content, and continue to bolster the studio’s position as a leading creator of original unscripted television,” said Vanderheyden.

CBS picked up Distefano from How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and Sony TV.  The comedy focuses on an Italian-Puerto Rican family and stars comedian Chris Distefano.

Investigation Discovery commissioned a true crime slate from Arrow Media. Co-produced with Canada-based production company Saloon Media, the thirteen-part series will reveal more shocking murder mysteries. Arrow is also set to produce Season 2 of American Monster, which reveals the twisted double lives led by America’s most terrifying monsters before they were finally apprehended.

Toonz Media Group partnered with Sharmaji Productions, LLC to produce a full season of animated children’s series Uma and Devan Namaste!. Targeting preschoolers, the show explores the daily lives of Indian-American siblings, Uma (age 5) and Devan (almost age 4), as they balance growing up in the U.S. while staying true to their Indian heritage.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The fifth and final season of BBC America’s Orphan Black premieres Saturday, June 10 at 10p. Tatiana Maslany returns as multiple clones. In addition, Maslany and the show’s full cast are slated to appear together for the first time at 2017’s PaleyFest LA on Thursday, March 23.

NBC’s Little Big Shots returns Sunday, March 5 at 8p. Hosted by Steve Harvey, the show’s sophomore season features the likes of a pint-sized cowboy and snail whisperer, a professional animal caller and young experts in anatomy, geography and Shakespeare.

HBO’s Veep returns on Sunday, April 16 at 10:30p. The show’s sixth season will include 10 episodes.

Bravo Media heads to the heartland when Sweet Home Oklahoma premieres Monday, March 20 at 10p with back-to-back episodes. Docu-series follows an eccentric, unfiltered group of ride-or-die friends who navigate life in Oklahoma City.

School guidance counselor Veronica "Pooh" Nash-Poleate, who’s gained online fame for her common sense advice, is coming to TLC in She’s In Charge, launching Tuesday, March 7 at 10p. In each one-hour episode, Nash-oleate will visit people who have asked for help for everything from child-rearing to work balance to love lives.

COMING UP

Oxygen Media presents “Homicide: Valentine’s Day” weekend, beginning Saturday, February 11 at 7p. The programming block features crimes of passion episodes of Snapped, Snapped: Killer Couples and #killerpost.

The world’s most ferocious felines return for Nat Geo Wild’s seventh annual Big Cat Week starting Monday, February 20 at 9p. The weeklong event, in partnership with National Geographic Society’s Big Cats Initiative aims to raise awareness of the plight of big cats

Star Trek icon William Shatner performs stand-up after 25 years in a new episode of AXS TV’s Gotham Comedy Live on Thursday, February 16 at 10p.

Media, an original movie exploring the drama and secrets behind a powerful family dynasty, bows Saturday, February 25 at 8p on TV One.

Patsy Cline: American Masters airs Saturday March 4 on PBS during Women’s History Month (check local listings). Narrated by Rosanne Cash, it examines Cline’s impact on American culture and how she synthesized country, pop and rock in a new way.

Shall We Dance on Ice bows Saturday, February 11 at 3p on ABC. Hosted by Kristi Yamaguchi and Robert Herjavec (Shark Tank), the special features skating and dance performances by Tony Dovalani, Dmitry Chaplin, Chelsie Hightower, Anna Trebunskaya and more, as well as a musical performance by Goo Goo Dolls.

Turner Sports hosts NBA on TNT Road Show on site at NBA All-Star 2017 in New Orleans, Thursday, February 16 through Sunday, February 19. Live telecasts feature Inside the NBA studio team, a performance from Pitbull, interactive fan experiences, basketball clinics, pop-up stores, a food truck and more.

ADVERTISING

Videology released its Q4 2016 U.S. TV & Video At-A-Glance report, which found that in the second half of 2016 more than one-fourth of advanced TV campaigns used their own first-party data for targeting. Segments included past purchase history, website visits, registration data or loyalty data, and offered brands a way to utilize their direct relationship with customers for more relevant advertising. Additionally, over the past year, Videology saw a 273 percent increase in spending on linear TV advertising campaigns and an 840 percent increase in the number of linear TV impressions available to be bought and sold programmatically.

CASTING

Jennifer Finnigan (Tyrant) was tapped to star in CBS summer event series Salvation. She’ll play Pentagon press secretary Grace Darrow in the series that explores what happens when an MIT grad student (Red Band Society‘s Charlie Rowe) and a tech superstar discover that an asteroid is six months away from colliding with Earth.

Castle vet Nathan Fillion nabbed a guest spot on FOX’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He’ll portray Mark Devereaux, the star of a Law & Order-type show. Series resumes its fourth season on Tuesday, April 11 at 8p.

DIGITAL DOINGS

The Golden Girls are headed to Hulu. The streamer has the complete sitcom series, which is set to launch on Monday, February 13.

EPIX launched on Apple TV. It offers subscribers the ability to watch a multiplex of EPIX live linear channels, the capability to add content to a personal queue, free sampling, curated collections, advanced search and video playback features, and movie trailers.

AT&T AUDIENCE Network greenlit Religion of Sports for a second season to air later this year exclusively on DIRECTV, DIRECTV NOW and AT&T U-Verse. Series is executive produced by Tom Brady, Michael Strahan and filmmaker Gotham Chopra.

21st Century Fox is gearing up to make significant updates to its branded streaming apps in the U.S. within the next few months. During a call on Monday, CEO James Murdoch said, “We will be rolling out a major overhaul of our streaming apps, which will deliver a step change for customers and future customers in quality, in discovery and in engagement,” according to a Seeking Alpha transcript. Fox streaming apps include Fox Now, FX Now and Fox Sports Go.

GOING GLOBAL

Stan became the Australian streaming home for content from the Cartoon Network, after entering a partnership with Turner. The partnership will feature the premiere of the eighth and final season of Regular Show in April. In addition, new seasons of Adventure Time and The Powerpuff Girls will premiere at the same time as they air on Cartoon Network.

Big Bad Boo Studios extended its UNICEF partnership to reach refugee children in more countries with additional content. The initial program began in 2016, providing 50,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees in Jordan with materials based on the children’s TV series 1001 Nights. The new agreement expands the reach to 170,000 refugees in six countries.

A+E Networks’ FYI format Bride & Prejudice debuted with strong ratings on Seven Network Australia. Bride & Prejudice: The Forbidden Weddings ranked as the top series in the 9p time slot among Total Viewers and all key demos averaging 1.2 million (Metro and Regional) viewers.

Genius Brands International continued to build programming for its Kid Genius Cartoon Channel with bilingual animated series, LaGolda. Season 1 premieres this month and is available on Comcast’s Xfinity on Demand platform as well as across OTT platforms Roku, Amazon Fire and Apple TV.

Keywest Marketing Ltd acquired the Canadian interest in the World Fishing Network from Insight Sports of Toronto. The World Fishing Network is owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment.

Armoza Formats announced the release of prime time format The City Inspector, an original production from the Ukraine by 1+1 Media Group. Locally titled Inspector Freymut  Cities and hosted by journalist Olga Freymut, brings important social issues to light.

RATINGS

The final full week before February sweeps, the session ending January 29, was a big for Dr Phil (3.7 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 23% from the week before). Live with Kelly (2.5, steady) snared second place in talk, snapping a three-week tie with Ellen DeGeneres (2.4, down 4%).

Marked by heavy coverage of the life and death of TV icon Mary Tyler Moore, Entertainment Tonight (3.6, up 9%) was the sole magazine moving up in the week. It hit its second highest rating of the season and led the mags for the 26th straight week.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with Chris Harrison grew to season highs during the week (without January 23), building over the prior week in Households (up +6%), Total Viewers (up +7%), A25-54 (up +20%) and Women 25-54 (up +14%). Millionaire tied its season high in Households, matching or setting new season bests on three of the last four weeks.

Behind series Top Chef, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Vanderpump Rules, Bravo ranked #5 in press prime among P18-49; its highest January ranking ever.  The network was also #6 among P25-54 versus ad-supported cable entertainment networks. In press prime, Bravo was up +4% in P25-54 and +6% in total viewers versus January 2016.

Oxygen was the fastest growing ad-supported cable entertainment network among total viewers in total day, up +42% year-over-year, in January. The net was also up +15% in F18-49, +15% in P18-49 and +22% in F25-54 in total day vs January 2016. Oxygen’s Crime Block was up +59% in total viewers and +27% in F25-54 from the same time period of last year.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

David Wolkis was promoted to Senior Vice President of Production for TBS originals. He will continue to manage production for all of TBS original series, while also developing the Conan brand through its Conan Without Borders specials and other initiatives.

Meghan Hooper White was upped to Senior Vice President, Original Co-Productions and Acquisitions, for Lifetime and LMN. She joined the networks in 2011 as Vice President, responsible for overseeing all program acquisitions for Lifetime and LMN.

Gordon Ramsey’s Studio Ramsay hired Helen Cooke as Head of Popular Factual. She joins from Channel 4 where she was Features Editor.

Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios added Dan Fisher as Vice President of Acquisitions and Rachel Koehler as Director of Acquisitions for Freestyle Digital Media, the digital content distribution unit of its feature film distribution company Freestyle Releasing. Fisher previously served as Senior Director of Acquisitions at Gravitas Ventures. Koehler last worked as Acquisitions Manager at Gravitas Ventures.

Digital Pulp made two new hires. April Osmanof, formerly of Fastspot, was named Senior Strategist. Colin Murphy, who last worked at Ignite Brand Group, was tapped as Director of Client Relations.

Arrow Media appointed Sam Starbuck as Executive Editor. She was previously a producer at BBC, Nutopia and Raw TV.

Creative agency Barton F. Graf named Jeff Benjamin as Partner, Executive Creative Director. He joins from Bark & Co., where he was Creative Consultant.

GRB Entertainment hired Laura Icken as Vice President of Legal and Business Affairs. She last served as Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs for Playboy TV.

IN MEMORIAM

Maj. Gen. John “Hawk” Hawkins III died on Saturday, February 4. The retired three-star general served as a military analyst for TV One’s NewsOne Now, where he offered insight on public safety and government security.
