Good morning. It’s Monday February 6, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Congratulations to the New England Patriots, our 2017 Super Bowl Champions. As if the spectacle of the Super Bowl wasn’t enough, engagement sparkled throughout the night with the league’s first overtime game, a historic comeback, Tom Brady’s fifth ring, mind-blowing catches as well as Lady Gaga and a drone army. Of course, ads continued to stand front and center, whether they were unveiled via early release, as part of a storyline leading into the game or delivered

with a surprise celebrity.

Once the dust settled both on and off-the-field, it was Budweiser’s much-discussed ‘Born the Hard Way’ that generated the highest digital share of voice as the game came to a close, according to ispot.tv, which leveraged online activity, online views and social actions for each of the game’s commercials. ON THE AIR

ESPN settled its lawsuit with Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul stemming from the network’s disclosure of his medical records from a 2015 fireworks accident. The company announced the settlement on Friday, with case set for trial in August after a Miami federal judge rejected ESPN’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit, reading, “ESPN continues to firmly believe that its reporting about Mr. Pierre-Paul’s July 2015 injury, including the use of a medical chart that definitively described the seriousness of the injury and resulting treatment, was both newsworthy and journalistically appropriate. Despite their different points of view, the parties have agreed to amicably resolve their dispute rather than continue their litigation.”

Elsewhere in law-law land, the NCAA and 11 major conferences agreed to pay $208.7 million to settle a federal class-action lawsuit filed by former college athletes who claimed the value of their scholarships was illegally capped, according to the AP. The settlement must be approved by a judge and would be fully funded by NCAA reserves, the association said.

ESPN College GameDay Covered by State Farm is slated to make a first-time visit to the campus of Saint Mary’s on Feb. 11 as part of the network’s Rivalry Week presented by Wendy’s programming. The matchup will feature the team face Gonzaga on ESPN at 8:15p with College GameDay running at 11a with an evening edition leading into the game telecast at 8 p.m.

Nature’s Bakery was in line to sponsor at least 20 races this NASCAR season as part of the second year of a three-year deal. The AP writes that the suit claims Nature’s Bakery contacted SHR about "cash flow issues, and asked if payment amounts and deadlines" could be modified on the more than $15 million the company owes the team each season. SHR also alleges that the company of created "a scheme to avoid further payments" by claiming Patrick had been endorsing competing products and was not using her social media presence enough to promote Nature’s Bakery.

More legal conflicts as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes that GNC may take legal action against FOX Broadcasting after the network rejected the brand’s first Super Bowl ad. In turn, GNC has retained legal counsel and is in the process of preparing a formal complaint with Fox Broadcasting Co.” The commercial was slated to be broadcast during the first quarter of the game.
