IN THE NEWS

HBO’s Game of Thrones and Veep were repeat winners at the DGA Awards, for top drama and comedy directing. Other TV winners included HBO’s The Night Of, CBS’s broadcast of the Tony Wards, Fox reality show American Grit, and NBC’s Saturday Night Live. TV winners at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards on Saturday night included HBO’s Game of Thrones and The Night Of, and USA’s Mr. Robot.

Alec Baldwin returned as President Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live this weekend, and host Kristen Stewart dropped the F-bomb in her opening monologue, but SNL’s most notable segment was a surprise appearance by Melissa McCarthy as media hater Sean Spicer at a White House press briefing. “I’d like to begin today by apologizing on behalf of you, to me, for how you have treated me these past two weeks,” McCarthy-as-Spicer shouted. “And that apology is NOT accepted.”

The Patriots may have won the game, but for many people the Super Bowl was all about the ads. (Plus the moving moment former president George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara took to center field to perform the coin toss, and Lady Gaga dropping down from the roof for a halftime show that ended with a mic drop.) From Fox’s Empire to Ford going “Further,” to film teasers and Febreeze’s odor odes, along with timely spots touching on immigration, ads spanned the emotional spectrum. How’d they rate with viewers this year?

Once the dust settled both on and off-the-field, it was Budweiser’s much-discussed ‘Born the Hard Way’ that generated the highest digital share of voice as the game came to a close, according to ispot.tv, which leveraged online activity, online views and social actions for each of the game’s commercials. We’ll have more data tomorrow but for now, here’s the top ten:

1.   Budweiser ‘Born the Hard Way,’ – 18.71% of online activity.

2.   Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things Season Two: 1984 – 13.14%

3.   T-Mobile’s ‘#UnlimitedMoves’ with Justin Bieber – 9.3%

4.   Mr. Clean’s ‘Cleaner of Your Dreams’ – 8.55%

5.   Audi’s ‘Daughter’ – 5.2%

6.   Kia’s ‘ Hero’s Journey’ featuring Melissa McCarthy – 4.38%

7.   Buick’s ‘Not So Pee Wee Football’ featuring Cam Newton – 3.48%

8.   84 Lumber’s ‘The Journey Begins’ – 3.05%

9.   Nintendo Switch – 2.59%

10. Skittles’ ‘Romance’ – 2.58%

In his pre-Super Bowl interview with Donald Trump, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly asked the president why he respects his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, given that he’s a known killer. “We got a lot of killers, you think our country’s so innocent?” responded Trump. (“I want to know what the Russians have on Donald Trump,” said House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on Meet the Press that morning, after the clip was released.) More footage from the conversation will air on The O’Reilly Factor tonight and tomorrow at 8p.

Nat Geo went big for upcoming scripted series Genius, with the network’s first stand-alone spot in the Super Bowl. The 45-second promo, called “Bad Romance,” followed Lady Gaga’s halftime show. Series premieres Tuesday, April 25.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Michael Obeng is suing E!, NBCUniversal and Bright Roads Productions, claiming that while he intended to appear on reality show Famously Married (previously titled Second Wives Club) with his spouse to show his happy marriage and promote his business, the series instead “was designed to incite personal conflicts between Plaintiff and his wife and specifically to incite their divorce.” (According to court records, Obeng’s wife filed for divorce in July.) Obeng is seeking an order to keep any footage of his family from airing.

A blackout of Northwest Broadcasting-owned affiliates on Cable One ended days before the Super Bowl, avoiding a mutiny from football fans. “We’re pleased to restore these channels to our customers, and we appreciate their patience and loyalty while we worked to reach an agreement,” said Cable One VP John Gosch.
