IN THE NEWS

In its continuing carriage dispute with Charter Spectrum, which left Univision dark on Charter, Univision Communications released the following statement late yesterday afternoon: “A judge who was temporarily assigned to our case today said that she planned to issue an order that Univision’s networks and stations had to be restored on Charter Spectrum for 7 days. This order only lasts until February 9, when the judge permanently assigned to the litigation is back in court. For the 7 day period that it is receiving Univision’s services, Charter Spectrum will be required to post a bond covering the actual market value of Univision’s programming, rather than the inadequate rates that Charter Spectrum has been paying. Univision remains ready and willing to meet at any time with Charter Spectrum to engage in comprehensive, good-faith negotiations for the long term carriage of our stations and networks. To date, Charter Spectrum has steadfastly refused to engage in such negotiations.”

A+E Networks is investing in the National Women’s Soccer League with an equity stake, and together the two entities are launching NWSL Media, a media and commercial joint venture. Lifetime will be official sponsor and broadcast partner of the league in a three-year deal beginning in April with the broadcast of an NWSL Game of the Week every weekend of the season. Dan Surrat, A+E Nets’ president, corporate development, strategy and Investments, told Cynopsis at a presser that the move is about the evolution of the Lifetime brand. “There’s absolutely a sense of mission for the Lifetime brand as it’s evolving, and the launch of the Fempire, which is about creating engaging content and the empowerment of women at all ages. This is a sport that completely fits into that, when you look at what soccer has done over the last 15 or 20 years with its growth in the US.” A+E Nets’ president/CEO Nancy Dubuc said the new sports content will face “the same challenges we face with any show we do. At first audiences don’t have connection to characters, there’s no connection to story, there’s not even awareness of what that show is or what its brand is. It’s only with risk-taking that we can grow a franchise into a show like a Dance Moms or an Unreal or a Rap Game. And this is a comparable investment.” Dubuc added the NWSL’s existing brand provides a big leg up. “We don’t have to take that risk of whether or not there’s any audience that goes to NWSL games, or whether there’s interest in soccer or not. We know that’s there. And in a world where marketing and social and the way you can target audiences are all evolving, it’s easier for us to find those constituents who are already passionate and predisposed to be passionate about women’s soccer.”

Conan O’Brien will return to NY’s Apollo Theatre to originate his show from the Harlem venue November 7-12 as part of TBS’ alliance with the New York Comedy Festival. The network plans to activate fan experiences throughout the festival across digital and linear platforms, and explore development opportunities with comics appearing at the fest.

As seen on TV: Donald Trump took the first moments of the National Prayer Breakfast on Wednesday to praise his success as a television show host and blast the ratings for Celebrity Apprentice and its current host Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I want to just pray for Arnold, if we can. For those ratings. OK?” Trump told the gathering of religious leaders and diplomats. Schwarzenegger quickly responded via a rep: “Arnold is praying that President Trump can start improving his own approval ratings, which were the worst in history for an incoming President, by taking his job seriously and working inclusively.” Trump press secretary Sean Spicer yesterday called it a “lighthearted moment” and said “the totality” of Trump’s remarks at the breakfast “were absolutely beautiful.”

TBS’ Samantha Bee announced her April 29 Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this week, and yesterday the correspondents group released a statement saying its show will go on, on the same date in DC. It is unclear whether Donald Trump will attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, given his disdain of many in the media who cover the White House.

In other White House news, Trump will be down one for his meeting today with business leaders that make up his President’s Strategic and Policy Forum. Disney chief Bob Iger will reportedly not be attending due to a previously scheduled board meeting.

UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television’s Professional Programs today announced the winners of its Television Pilot Competition. The awards are determined by industry professionals and UCLA alumni; winners received a monetary prize. Winners are: Stephanie Berger (comedy) and Andrew Lewellen (drama). Honorable mentions went to Tyler Chatham (comedy) and Dominique Mouton (drama).

CBS plans to merge CBS Radio into Entercom Communications. The move would create a company with 224 stations, in 23 of the 25 biggest markets. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of this year.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Looks like sharks in the forecast again. Syfy and The Asylum have begun principal photography in Bulgaria on Sharknado 5, which will again star Ian Ziering and Tara Reid reprising their roles as shark-fighting heroes Fin Shepard and April Wexler. The new incarnation will see the deadly weather phenom bombard cities around the world, and film in more than five countries, including the UK and Australia. Anthony C. Ferrante, who directed the first four films, is back to helm this latest installment, based on a script by Scotty Mullen.

CBS gave a pilot order to Hannah Royce’s Questionable Choices, a comedy that originates from Mad Love creator Matt Tarses and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV is co-producing with CBS TV Studios.

Proper Television is under way on production of Last Stop Garage, a new factual series with a comic bent slated to air on Velocity and Discovery Canada in late 2017. It’s the first unscripted series to be filmed in Labrador, one of the most isolated and harshest environments in North America.

On the heels of launching its international division, indie studio Propagate has formed a first-look partnership with Colombian TV producer/network Caracol through which it will develop, pitch and produce Caracol formats for the US market. Included in the deal are scripted series La Nina and unscripted series A Otro Nivel.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Destination America will debut Killing Bigfoot this Saturday, February 4 at 10p, and its creator/director Peter von Puttkamer tells Cynopsis the show puts a very real lens on some current fiction phenomena.  “We had an amazing time filming Killing Bigfoot down south, with the show resembling a real-life Walking Dead or Stranger Things with aggressive monsters on the loose,” he says. “The show features the very-real Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization as they help frightened people in the south deal with a mysterious creature as it torments their property, as well as harvest a specimen for research to prove once and for all that Bigfoot is real.”

A&E Network’s original non-fiction crime series Nightwatch returns for new episodes on Thursday, February 9 at 10p. The new season takes place in Tampa, FL, and follows elite teams of emergency responders as they risk their lives to work the critical and daunting overnight shift where as many as 850 emergency calls come in every night.

It’s complicated. Revealing the severe issues that arise toward the end of a drastic weight loss journey, TLC’s Skin Tight returns for a second season on Wednesday, March 1 at 10p, following new episodes of My 600-Lb Life. Each of 10 one-hour eps will document the stories of two individuals who have lost massive amounts of weight but are still ashamed of their bodies and feel trapped in their own skin.

It’s a lucky 13th season for E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which returns Sunday, March 5 at 9p. Last season of the series averaged 2.5 million total viewers and 1.5 million A18-49 in L+3 viewing.

WGN America released key art for the second season of its series Underground ahead of the season premiere on Wednesday, March 8 at 10p. The release of images coincides with the series’ participation at aTVfest, which honored Underground with its annual Cast Award for outstanding contributions to the art of television. Season 2 follows an unremitting struggle for freedom within a divided America on the brink of civil war.

In addition, Arm & Hammer will have a custom integration on Home & Family and social media and digital elements including an exclusive sponsorship of the esteemed “Most Valuable Kitten” award.

What are the most important adjustments Scripps has made in a changing landscape, in terms of programming and advertising opportunities? Beth Lawrence, EVP of Digital Ad Sales, tells Cynopsis, "One of our biggest opportunities to flex is with our digital business, which changes so often that we’ve taught ourselves how to adapt more quickly. When we do that, we accommodate both the consumer who’s viewing our fantastic content in a variety of places and the marketer trying to move product to the right audience, wherever they may be. We’re incredibly flexible as we expand the definition of digital." Scripps Networks Interactive will be at the Cynopsis TV Awards next week, as a nominee, in several categories.
