IN THE NEWS

James Corden has been named host of The 70th Annual Tony Awards, airing live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Sunday, June 12at 8p on CBS. It will be Corden’s first time hosting the ceremony, but not his first time onstage – he won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors in 2012. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Tony Awards,” said Corden. “Both times I’ve worked on Broadway have been amongst the happiest times of my professional life. I consider it a huge honor to be asked to host such an incredible night. It’s gonna be fun, I can’t wait to dust off my tap shoes!”

Has she or hasn’t she? In a TV Line interview on Monday, Amy Sherman-Palladino, creator of Gilmore Girls and the Netflix sequel, said that she had put in a request with Melissa McCarthy‘s camp for the actress to return as Sookie. “[What] I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] – even if for just a cameo – we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out,’” said Sherman-Palladino. But apparently no one delivered the message. On Tuesday, McCarthy tweeted, “Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!”

BBC and Discovery Communications have announced a long-term Olympic Games agreement in the UK, building on a 30-year partnership between the organizations. Via the pact’s terms, BBC will sub-license from Discovery exclusive free-to-air audio-visual and non-exclusive radio rights to the 2022 and 2024 Games. In turn, Discovery will sub-license from the BBC exclusive pay-TV rights in the UK to the 2018 and 2020 Olympic Games.

Lady Gaga will perform a tribute to the late David Bowie at this year’s Grammy Awards, airing Monday, February 15 at 8p on CBS. The network is promising “a multi-sensory testament to Bowie’s incredible artistry and a reflection of his limitless creativity.” NileRodgers, who produced Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” album, will serve as musical director for the performance.

In more Lady Gaga news, the singer has been tapped to perform the national anthem at Super Bowl 50, while actress Marlee Matlin provides sign language for the hearing impaired. The star-studded musical lineup already includes Coldplay and Beyonce, who are performing the halftime show, in addition to acts by Bruno Mars, Adele, Rihanna and Taylor Swift. The Super Bowl kicks off Sunday, February 7 at 3:30p.

Fuse celebrates Super Bowl weekend with a sneak peek of The Lineup on Saturday, February 6 at 9p. Featuring top athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR and more, the series takes viewers through a playlist of songs that get them pumped for games and push them through workouts. Before taking the field on Super Bowl Sunday, Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. will take viewers through the hits that helped forge a winning season. Official launch: Saturday, February 27, at 9p.

Executive producer/writer Chuck Lorre, the creative force behind Warner Bros. Television comedies The Big Bang Theory, Mom, Mike & Molly and Two and a Half Men for CBS, will be inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the 2016 NAB Show Television Luncheon on Monday, April 18, in Las Vegas. “His biting wit and memorable characters have become a part of our culture and defined an era of scripted comedies for Warner Bros. Television and CBS  comedies that remind us, on a weekly basis, of the scale and power of broadcast television,” said NAB EVP of Television, Marcellus Alexander.

REALSCREEN

Elephant in the room: Although Netflix wasn’t at Realscreen in any official capacity, the streaming service and its latest binge-sation Making a Murderer were a near constant presence on stage – from discussion among execs ranging from the binge phenomenon to budgets. “You come out of TCA and Netflix announced they’re spending $6 billion on content,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS chief programing executive/GM, general audience programming. “But we have reach they don’t have and boots in the ground in communities with the opportunity for that one-on-one connection people are looking for.” And while most touted the documentary as a pinnacle of unscripted story-telling, the series gets a “meh” from at least one discerning viewer. “I might be the only person in the world who didn’t really love Making A Murderer,” Marjorie Kaplan, president of content at Discovery Networks International, said during her Tuesday keynote. Her superlative in the true crime genre? HBO’s Robert Durst probe The Jinx. “It was such a different way of telling a story, I love that,” she said, adding, “We should all be so lucky to do a show where you catch the bad guy in the last minute.”

Five months on the job as president of content at Discovery Networks International, Marjorie Kaplan is using her background in advertising more than ever as she shapes the company’s global strategy. “Ad agencies know so much about the consumer, and in television it’s all too easy to assume we are the audience. We are sometimes the audience, but not always,” she said during her Realscreen keynote yesterday. Kaplan is clearly relishing the freedoms working across international markets brings. She shared a sizzle for Undressed, a series where two soulmate-seeking adults meet for the first time, take it all off and spend a half hour in bed. “It’s doing really, really well in Italy,” she said eliciting laughs from the audience, “and will be exploring for other parts of the world. Of course there are some places where it will not play, including on this stage.” Key to Discovery’s direction moving forward is story-telling with a point of view.” Regardless of genre, Discovery will continue to look for unscripted programming with a strong point of view, she said. “What’s different about television vs. YouTube, which also has great stuff on it – if you want real, real stuff, there’s plenty of real stuff on the web  is having a creator in the center of the story-telling.”

What’s Up, Doc? Networks are fine-tuning their limited series documentary strategy, with a sharper focus on how the content dovetails with their specific brand. “Defining your voice and place in that market has become so important,” Vinnie Malhorta, Showtime SVP, documentaries, unscripted & sports programming, said at Realscreen. ”People are much more selective about what’s going to work for their brand.” “The reality is marketing dollars are going to be there for the first episode but will they be there for three, four, five,” said John Hoffman, EVP documentaries & specials at Discovery Channel. “You need to be pretty sure there’s an inherent curiosity on the topic. We have a few in production and I’m more nervous about those than the one-offs.” Part of the equation is determining what works best for a given audience. “Turns out we have better success with things that are closed-ended,” CNN EVP talent and content development Amy Entelis said. Citing doc series Chicagoland, and High Profits, she said, “These were very high-quality, great storytelling, but getting people to come back week after week when you had to have watched precious episode is tricky.” Doc series with closed-ended episodes also “allow us to repeat our episodes opportunistically,” Entelis added. “When something is going on in Iran, we can run the Bourdain episode in Iran.” She previewed a new doc series featuring African-American W. Kamau Bell intermingling with the KKK. Whereas just few years ago a producer could pitch the same doc to a number of networks, “That doesn’t work any more,” said Tim Pastore, president of original programming & production at National Geographic Channel. Noting Nat Geo is now about content that’s “a little more unsuspected,” Pastore cited upcoming Brett Morgen-helmed Jane Goodall series and gave a first-look at The Deep Freeze, which follows an environmental crew in frigid Antarctica.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

FOX has ordered pilot The Mick (wt). The single-camera comedy, from It’s Always Sunny on Philadelphia co-executive producers John Chernin and David Chernin, centers on a hard-living, foul mouthed woman who moves to Greenwich, CT to raise the spoiled children of her wealthy sister, who left the country to avoid a federal indictment.

Garcia’s Sebastian centers on stand-up comedian Sebastian Maniscalo, as his old-school values are put to the test by his new wife, her family and the modern world. Thomas’ Crunch Time intercuts between a real game show and the scripted workplace, focusing on an up-and-coming producer trying to wrangle the volatile host.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt has signed on to executive produce and direct the TV reboot pilot of The Exorcist. The psychological thriller follows two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession.

RATINGS

January 2016 now ranks as the highest-rated month in HGTV history among primetime and weekend viewers P25-54. The net scored a .65 P25-54 rating in primetime (Monday-Sunday 8p to 12a) – up 14 percent over January 2015 – and delivered a .60 P25-54 rating on weekends (Saturday-Sunday 7a to 8p), up 13 percent over January 2015. HGTV also led cable networks on weekends, nabbing the #1 spot among W25-54.

Monday night’s episode of The CW‘s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend hit a high in total viewers (1.04 million), A18-49 (0.4/1), and W18-49 (0.5/1), and matched its series high in A18-34 (0.4/1). Week to week, the show was up 17 percent in total viewers, up 33 percent  in A18-34 and up 33 percent in A18-49. Jane the Virgin also rose week to week, up 4 percent in total viewers (1.04 million) and up 33 percent in A18-34 (0.4/1).

It’s not just about the numbers. Why is context important in the ratings conversation? “Ratings data (the ‘what’) is useless without a context (the ‘why’),” says Linda Ong, CEO and Founder of TruthCo., who will be speaking at the February 9 Cynopsis Ratings Boot Camp. “Because numbers are absolute, they must be viewed in the setting in which they’re happening to be fully understood,” Ong tells Cynopsis. “Today, success metrics must be more diversified and different from the past. For example, looking at ratings in a year-to-year framework is unhelpful when all of linear viewing is down. But looking at viewership from the context of growth and retention can point to opportunities even when numbers are disappointing from a traditional perspective.”

During the week of January 18, LIVE with Kelly and Michael grew over the prior week to its 2nd-strongest week of the season in Households (up 3 percent) and Total Viewers (up 2 percent), beating beat Ellen by 14 percent in Homes and by 7 percent in Total Viewers to rank as the week’s #2 syndicated talk show.

ABC‘s The Bachelor was Monday’s #1 TV series for the 5th week in a row in A18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49) and finished as the #2 show of the night in A18-49, behind The X-Files. From 8-10p, The Bachelor was the most-watched TV show (7.4 million) in its 2-hour time period, while also winning in A18-34 and across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

CBS Evening News With Scott Pelley continues to post season-to-date audience gains, adding the most viewers among the network evening news broadcasts, according to Nielsen most current ratings through January 29.  The news show is up 4 percent in viewers (7.58 million from 7.30 million) and maintained its rating in A25-54 (1.5/06) compared to last season.

ABC News‘ World News Tonight with David Muir averaged 9.185 million Total Viewers, 2.078 million A25-54 and 1.498 million A18-49 for the week of January 25, 2016, based on Live+SD data. Season to date, the news show is improving versus the same point last season in Total Viewers (up 1 percent – 8.803 million vs. 8.729 million).
