Facing outrage in the Twitterverse, Nationwide defended its decision to run an ad during the Super Bowl that depicted a little boy who died in a household accident. “The sole purpose of this message was to start a conversation, not sell insurance,” said the company.

“While some did not care for the ad, we hope it served to begin a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere.” The insurance company got a more positive response for its humorous “Invisible” spot, featuring Mindy Kaling with a surprise assist from Matt Damon, that did try to sell insurance. The message: that the company treats its customers as a priority.

IN THE NEWS

Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most-watched in the game’s history. New England’s dramatic 28-24 victory over Seattle delivered 114.5 million viewers for NBC, beating 2013’s match by 3 million, with a third-best-ever 47.5/71 rating among A18-49.

Oprah Winfrey and filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma) have teamed for an OWN drama series inspired by the novel Queen Sugar. DuVernay will write, direct and exec produce; Winfrey will exec produce and appear in a recurring role, a first for Winfrey and the net that’s named for her. The themes of “reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show,” said Winfrey. Production begins later this year.

The IMAX theater presentation of HBO’s Game of Thrones earned $1.5 million, averaging about $7300 per theater, with sales briskest in big cities. “This was a successful response for this first experiment,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Entertainment. “We will continue to experiment and comb over the data.”

Funny or Die’s The Chris Gethard Show moves from public access to national television with a 10-week season on Fusion, debuting in April. “Chris Gethard’s brand of comedy is unlike anything else out there, but his authenticity and charm have made him one of the best-kept secrets in comedy circles for years,” said Fusion Chief Programming Officer Wade Beckett. Among the quirky comedy’s exec producers are Gethard, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Add two comedies from Universal Television to ABC’s pilot pile: Family Fortune, from Matt Hubbard, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, starring Fortune Feimster (Chelsea Lately) as a gym teacher who comes out of the closet, and a remake of 1989’s Uncle Buck, a co-production with ABC Studios, produced by Will Packer (Ride Along).

UK-based Plimsoll Productions is opening an office in the U.S. EVP of international production Andrew Jackson, hired in August to develop the company’s strategy on this side of the Atlantic, will oversee the effort – including shopping format Big Family Mansion, a reality show about different generations living under one roof. Why now? “With seven series sold since Plimsoll launched just over a year ago, it’s absolutely the right time to establish a full time base in LA.,” Jackson tells Cynopsis. “I’m excited to be working again with colleagues and friends in the US.”

Production begins March 30 on new drama Quarry, picked up for eight episodes by Cinemax. Series starring Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus) is based on the novels of Max Allan Collins.

COMING UP

Barn Hunters is back on Great American Country with new eps tonight at 9p. Just what is the appeal of renovated barns? Sean Tracy, star of the Juma Entertainment reality series, tells Cynopsis, “Right after 9/11, my phone rang off the hook with folks wanting to leave their city life and renovate a barn in the country. Barns seem to be a throwback to a more simpler lifestyle that folks are looking for.”

History’s Counting Cars returns for season four on Tuesday, February 24 at 9p. Back-to-back eps launch with the restorations of a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner and 1970 Dodge Coronet.

Today’s Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Carson Daly and Al Roker host; party starts with a red carpet special on Sunday, February 15 at 7p.

Antenna TV is airing an 8-hour marathon of Doogie Howser, M.D., beginning at 4p on Saturday, February 21. The 1989-1993 series, of course, starred Neil Patrick Harris, host of the Oscars ceremony airing Sunday, February 22 at 7p on ABC.

American Songbook at NJPAC features jazz guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli and his six-piece band saluting lyricist and songwriting great Johnny Mercer on Wednesday, February 4 at 8p on NJTV. What’s Pizzarelli’s favorite Mercer song? “Jamboree Jones, because it’s about music and sports, all in one,” the world-renowned musician tells Cynopsis. “Only Johnny Mercer could write a song where the clarinet player saves the day for the football team.” The episode makes its THIRTEEN premiere Saturday, March 28 at 1p.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Budweiser’s “Lost Dog” Super Bowl ad topped the popularity charts, according to the USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter and TiVo research. Next came Always (“Like a Girl”), Fiat (“Blue Pill”) and Microsoft (“Braylon”) by USA Today’s count, and Joyful Heart Foundation (“911 Delivery”), Doritos (“Middle Seat”) and Nationwide (“Invisible MIndy Kaling”) by TiVo’s reckoning.

So what was the secret to spending $4.5 million wisely this Super Bowl? “In addition to the usual mix of furry animals and beer, there was a consistent theme of family and love. McDonalds even called their spot ‘Pay With Lovin’ while both Nissan and Toyota spots dealt with fatherhood,” Jonathan Steuer, TiVo’s chief research officer, tells Cynopsis. “However, in the end, our data showed that it was the humorous spots that once again scored tops as the top most-engaging commercials.”

The top ten Super Bowl spots according to TiVo research have been announced. But what came it at number eleven: Assurance, BMW or Sprint? The correct answer could win you a TiVo Roamio! Enter here.

Sprout and Loews Hotels & Resorts struck a partnership for property guests traveling with kids. Perks for pint-sized customers include Sprout themed activity books, place-mats to color and  the chance to try out the new Sprout Channel Cubby Tablet during their stay, as well as a “Sprout Dream Stay Welcome Package” with additional goodies. “Partnering with such a recognized network like Sprout allows us to offer complimentary amenities for the little ones to enjoy during their stay, providing an added bonus for families,” said Bruce J. Himelstein, CMO of Loews.
