Good morning. It’s Thursday February 2, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

First Response Time: In social media, first response time is a measurement of how long it takes an organization to give its first response to an individual’s comment or inquiry. First response time can serve as a key performance indicator for social customer service.

TOP NEWS

Ouch. A jury in Dallas, Texas just ordered Oculus, the Facebook-owned VR company, to pay out $500 million in damages to game developer ZeniMax. In a two-year-old dispute, ZeniMax had alleged that Oculus founder Palmer Lucky and CTO John Carmack had used Zenimax’s trade secrets in the development of the Oculus Rift VR headset. While the Jury didn’t agree that Oculus had used trade secrets, they did find that Luckey – who worked as a contractor for ZeniMax before developing the Rift – had violated a non-disclosure agreement, and that Oculus had infringed on copyright, according to a report from Polygon. On the bright side for Oculus, $500 million is significantly less than what ZeniMax wanted; the company had sought as much as $4 billion in damages.

Judging by their behavior on Wall Street, Facebook’s investors didn’t seem to care too much about the Oculus verdict. Here’s why: In its new earnings report, the social media giant reported over $10 billion in net 2016 income. That’s in large part because the company’s user-base keeps growing. Facebook reported that it now has 1.84 billion monthly active users. The company says it generated $8.8 billion in revenue in Q4 of 2016 alone, as compared to $5.8 billion during 2015’s Q4. The company pulled in almost $3.6 billion in net income during the quarter, compared to $1.6 billion a year earlier.

ADVERTISING

For the first time, Pinterest is offering search inventory to advertisers. The new functionality comes courtesy Kenshoo, one of the advertising vendors in Pinterest’s marketing partner program. Advertisers can buy search ads based on impressions, clicks on promoted or buyable pins, and engagement.

It’s no secret that Facebook has been diving head-on into the world of video; the social giant is even reportedly aiming to secure exclusive content. So it comes as no surprise that Facebook is looking to up its competitiveness with TV. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, the company is currently developing a video-centric app for TV set-top boxes including Apple TV. As the Journal points out, such an app would give Facebook a new home for its video advertising efforts. It’s not clear just yet when the app will be completed.

AUDIO + PODCASTS

The team behind the documentary podcast Serial seems to have built up a head of steam. The podcasts’s creators have teamed with public radio’s This American Life to form Serial Productions, a new production banner. The unit’s first production will be S-town, a non-fiction limited series set in rural Alabama and hosted by This American Life producer Brian Reed. All episodes of S-Town will be released simultaneously this March.

ESPORTS

As first reported by Variety, eSports producer ESL has forged a new partnership with David Hill, the former Fox TV producer who launched Fox Sports in the U.S. He’ll work to bring TV-level production values to ESL’s competitions, working with them exclusively on special projects with sponsors and game publishers. ESL and Hill will deliver eSports events through Hilly, Hill’s production unit. Hill’s first order of business: Helping ESL to recruit announcers, and helping to train ESL’s production crew to produce TV-caliber content. Hill left 20th Century Fox in 2015.

LIVE VIDEO

Late last year, Kickstarter launched Kickstarter Live, a platform that lets people make use of live-streaming in their crowdfunding campaigns. Huzza, a startup focused on creator-led events, helped to build said platform. It looks like Kickstarter was satisfied with their work: The crowdfunding company announced that it’s acquired Huzza for an undisclosed amount. Under the deal, Huzza will shut down its own platform for creators. “Our mission with Huzza has always been to help creators connect and more deeply engage with their communities, and we felt that we can have a bigger impact on creators by focusing our efforts on Kickstarter,” Huzza wrote in a blog post.
