IN THE NEWS

Apparently, crime pays – Oxygen Media is refocusing its programming, expanding to a crime destination for women. New series include Three Days to Live (harrowing abductions), launching Sunday, March 5, along with a revival of Cold Justice (small town murder cases), from Dick Wolf, and The Jury Speaks (controversial courtroom cases), both premiering in 3Q17. “Our ‘Crime Time’ weekend block has enjoyed double-digit gains and has really resonated with our female audience,” said Frances Berwick, president, lifestyle networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, pointing out this is hardly new territory for the net: “Oxygen has always played in this space with the highly successful original series Snapped, one of the longest running crime series on television now approaching its 20th season.”

On the heels of word that Fox News transplant Megyn Kelly will take a slice of NBC’s Today show, comes the news that Tamron Hall is leaving the network when her contract expires this month. Hall, who served as anchor on NBC and MSNBC and co-hosted the 9a hour of Today with Al Roker, was reportedly offered a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract. “We are disappointed that she has chosen to leave, but wish her the best,” said NBC. Offered Hall, “The last ten years have been beyond anything I could have imagined, and I’m grateful.” Roker will continue as Today co-host until a new morning lineup begins in fall 2017.

After going dark on Charter in a carriage agreement dispute, Univision Communications issued a statement framing the situation as part of a continuing issue with mega mergers. “Charter’s recent acquisition of Time Warner Cable and Brighthouse, making it the second largest cable and broadband company in the U.S., gives it immense marketplace power,” said Univision. “Given the size of the distribution platforms that it controls, Charter has an obligation to its customers to provide them with access to content that is in-language and in-culture, which is vitally important during these politically volatile times.”

CMT and TV Land have migrated from Viacom’s Kids & Family Group to the Global Entertainment Group, to be headed by Spike president Kevin Kay. The move, planned since October, will “strengthen these brands even further and will allow GEG to connect more deeply with our adult audience,” said Viacom CEO Bob Bakish in a memo to staff. As for Cyma Zarghami, head of Kids & Family, “Having her considerable focus and drive now centered on our important kids audience will keep Nickelodeon expanding its brand and business more than ever.”

Twentieth Television announced it has sold Page Six TV, the daily from the New York Post and Endemol Shine North America, in over 150 markets, increasing its clearance to over 60 percent of the country. These join the previously announced launch on the FOX Television stations in 17 markets, including New York and Los Angeles. After a successful three-week preview last summer, Page Six TV became the first new syndicated program to receive an official launch for Fall 2017. “Page Six TV offers local stations a fresh and groundbreaking program for their access time periods – an area within the syndication marketplace that has been void of new program offerings for many years,” said Ken Lawson, SVP and general sales manager, broadcast sales of Twentieth TV.

Hallmark Channel is launching its “Countdown to Valentine’s Day” programming stunt with a romance-themed installation at Grand Central’s Vanderbilt Hall. The multi-faceted event on February 9 will include 2 sets by country music artist Brett Young, a meet-and-greet with Sam Page, star of upcoming original movie Walking the Dog (Saturday, February 4 at 9p), and LA artist Robert Vargas painting live. Partner Korbel California Champagne will offer a taste of the bubbly.

Continuing his pokes at CNN, President Donald Trump said during a Black History Month event that African American CNN commentator Paris Dennard has done “an amazing job at a very hostile CNN community….But I don’t watch CNN so I don’t get to see you as much.” Some of the media is “fantastic and fair,” added Trump, “but so much of the media is opposition party.”

CNN commentator and TheBlaze host Buck Sexton is joining Premiere Networks as host of Buck Sexton With America Now, starting February 6. Sexton replaces Meghan McCain, who left to focus on her expanded role at Fox News.

The James Beard Foundation and Intersport struck a deal making Intersport the exclusive television content partner of JBF, as well as a digital and social media partner. The partnership begins this year with the creation of a James Beard Foundation 30th Anniversary TV special to air in the fall of 2017 and continues with the television broadcast of the 2018 James Beard Awards Gala in Chicago.

As more and more programmers and marketers use influencers to amplify their message, different strategies  and different types of influencers  have emerged. House Party, Inc., a leading influencer marketing platform, has found great success promoting TV shows and products by identifying and activating authentic consumers as brand ambassadors. Says Chris Maher, CEO of House Party, “Influencer marketing is hitting its stride and providing tangible ROI for marketers across categories. When brands align their goals with the right influencer partners and integrate them to the total media mix, the impact is tangible, driving advocacy that lasts.” But how do you find the influencers that can really move the needle? Hear from Maher, along with VaynmerMeda, Food Network and D S Simon in the February 9 webinar, New Methods to Use Influencers to Reach & Engage Your Target Audience. Details are here.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

A full 53 percent of viewers would be disappointed if there were no commercials during the Super Bowl, according to a survey from Burson-Marsteller. And 60 percent of those surveyed – and 87 percent of constant social media users – say they’re interested in the additional content that brands offer on social media in addition to Super Bowl spots.

One ad you won’t be seeing during the Super Bowl is for nutritional supplement GNC, which had planned a 30-second spot during the game. Though a rough cut had been approved by Fox, the NFL nixed any ad from GNC, on the grounds it would violate an NFL policy against advertising supplements during a game.
