Full Frontal With Samantha Bee host Samantha Bee and her show’s producers are holding a “Not the White House Correspondents Dinner” on Saturday, April 29 in D.C., the same night the official Correspondents Association event takes place. Hosted by Bee, the affair will include “journalists and non-irritating celebrities from around the world. We suspect some members of the press may find themselves unexpectedly free that night.” Proceeds go to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

NBC renewed The Good Place for season 2. Season one of the comedy, created by Mike Schur and starring Ted Danson and Kristen Bell, averaged 4.7 million viewers and a 1.4 rating among A18-49, with a Live+7 lift to 6.1 million viewers and 1.9. “Mike Schur has always had one of the most fertile and imaginative minds in comedy, but what he brought us with the first season of The Good Place was just extraordinary,” said Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment.

Peter Capaldi is leaving Doctor Who, the actor revealed Monday on BBC Radio 2. “I feel it’s time to move on,” said Capaldi, whose last turn will come on the 2017 Christmas special. Capaldi became the 12th actor to play the Doctor in 2013.

At ABC News, Jonathan Karl has been named Chief Washington Correspondent and Chief White House Correspondent; Cecilia Vega will move to Washington as Senior White House Correspondent; and Tom Llamas will become Chief National Correspondent and anchor of both weekend editions of World News Tonight. ABC News president James Goldston shared the moves via a memo to staff.

Also on the move: CNN Newsroom host Carol Costello is leaving the network – and the East Coast – to anchor a new show on sister net HLN, she told viewers on Monday. “Last year my husband snagged a fantastic job in Los Angeles and LMU. And I kind of miss him,” she said. “She is all heart and grace, and the epitome of a seasoned journalist, making her the perfect fit to join HLN’s powerful bench of reporters,” said CNN president Jeff Zucker.

And CNBC Squawk Alley business correspondent Kayla Tausche is moving to the network’s Washington bureau as a correspondent, effective February 6. “The past few days have shown that in the Trump era, much of the business in Washington is…business,” said Nik Deogun, SVP & Editor in Chief, CNBC Business News.

Univision, Fusion Media Group and American University’s Center for Media & Social Impact are teaming for a research-based initiative that will shape the depiction of social issues like healthcare, the educational achievement gap and reproductive health in entertainment media. The “Rise Up for Social Change” project will inform content produced across Univision’s Spanish-language broadcast, radio, and digital platforms as well as FMG’s English-language platforms including Fusion TV, The Root, The Onion, among others.

America’s Next Top Model is moving from Mondays to Wednesdays starting tomorrow, simulcast on VH1 and MTV at 10p. The reality show, now in season 23, will follow Black Ink Crew: New York, which had VH1’s highest-rated Wednesday premiere ever; MTV lead-in will be Are You the One?. It’s hardly Model’s first move  the show started on UPN, moved to The CW in 2006 and landed on VH1 last December.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

OWN is staying in business – big time – with producer Tyler Perry. The net ordered 38 episodes of a new Perry comedy, The Paynes, spun off his House of Payne, as well as ordering 44 additional episodes of Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots, and 18 episodes of If Loving You Is Wrong. The Paynes, which has begun production at the new Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, is slated for a 2018 debut.

Heading into their last seasons in new Saturday timeslots on OWN are Perry’s Love Thy Neighbor and For Better or Worse. Neighbor returns for its fourth and final season on March 4 at 9p; For Better or Worse launches its season 6 swan song on June 10 at 9p.

Fox ordered pilots for an investigative thriller, Controversy, from Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) and exec produced by Judy Smith (Scandal), and medical drama The Resident, exec produced by Antoine Fuqua, both from 20th Century Fox Television.

Gina Rodriguez signed an overall deal with CBS Television Studios. The Jane the Virgin star will develop projects for network, cable and streaming platforms through her I Can and I Will Productions.

Cartoon Network greenlit Summer Camp Island, based on an original short by Julia Pott (Adventure Time). “Summer Camp Island is a great example of the kind of creativity generated by our acclaimed studio shorts program,” said Rob Sorcher, Cartoon chief content officer.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Do America’s most popular vacation destinations live up to the hype? The hosts of Travel Channel’s Trip Testers check out whether a variety of adventures are worth the time and money. First up: Vegas, on Monday February 6 at 11p.

Fox picked up season 14 of summer series So You Think You Can Dance. After a season featuring contestants age 8-13, SYTYCD will return to hoofers age 18-30. “This season is about giving our loyal fan base what they’ve been asking for,” said executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. “We’ve decided to go back to basics.”

A&E grabbed two more seasons of nonfiction series 60 Days In. The show, following undercover participants who enter a dangerous prison, was cable’s number 1 unscripted crime series in 2016 among A25-54, A18-49 and total viewers in Live+7. 60 Days In: Atlanta premieres Thursday, March 2 at 9p.

DIY ordered two more seasons of Barnwood Builders. Since its March, 2015 debut, the series has attracted over 3.6 million total viewers a month. New episodes launch in 2017.

COMING UP

The Dark Side of the Sun, narrated by Sting, premieres as the centerpiece of “Science Channel Weekend” on Discovery Channel on Saturday, February 11 at 10p, as well as on Science Channel Sunday, February 12 at 9p. Discovery will air science-themed programming throughout the weekend, including Telescope, MythBusters, and What on Earth?.

Sony Movie Channel is offering a night with Brad Pitt for Valentine’s Day. On Tuesday, February 14, the net will air Legends of the Fall and A River Runs Through It, starting at 7:45.

Antenna TV has its own plans for Valentine’s Day: a 17-hour marathon of Wings, beginning at 5a.

Turner Classic Movies is going alphabetical this year for its annual “31 Days of Oscar” stunt, featuring movies that have won or been nominated for an Academy Award. First up: Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940). Lineup starts tomorrow, February 1 at 6a.

American Heroes Channel is all in for President’s Day, with special programming that “reveals the good, and the bad and the fun of our nation’s Commanders in Chief.” Night starts off with a new episode of America: Facts vs. Fiction at 8p on Monday, February 20, that offers surprises about some former presidents.

Katie Couric talks to experts and everyday people about gender for Nat Geo doc Gender Revolution. Film premieres Monday, February 6 at 9p.

HDNet Movies celebrates Black History Month with a night of films starring the first two African-Americans to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, in “The A-List: Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington” on Tuesday, February 28 at 7p. Evening starts with Washington in 1989’s The Mighty Quinn.

Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials airs tonight at 8p on CBS, with viewers able to vote for their favorite spots. “Our Top 10 Countdown this year features ‘5 Bigger is Better’ and 5 ‘Less is More’ commercials, asking viewers whether they prefer big budget Super Bowl spots or the smaller yet extremely clever commercials,” Juma Entertainment’s Robert Horowitz, the show’s EP, tells Cynopsis. “We also feature Cindy Crawford 25 years after her classic Pepsi commercial. During the interview she told she us that she came to the commercial shoot wearing long legged jeans. The director took out scissors and created the shorts she wore in the commercial.”

CASTING

The cast of AT&T Audience’s Mr. Mercedes, written by David E. Kelley (Boston Legal), includes Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter), as Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful), Kelly Lynch (Magic City), Jharrel Jerome (Moonlight), Scott Lawrence (Avatar), Robert Stanton (Mercury Rising), Breeda Wool (UnReal), Justine Lupe (Francis Ha), and Ann Cusack (Nightcrawler), with Mary Louise-Parker (Weeds) and Holland Taylor (The Truman Show). The show is currently in production in Charleston, SC.

Mad Men’s Jon Hamm guest stars as Don Grouper on SpongeBob Squarepants special, “Goodby, Krabby Patty?”, on Monday, February 20 at 7p. The special is part of Nick’s weekend-long “Krabby Patty Party.”

New Zealand actor Gary Young landed the role of Mr. Willoughby and Charlie Hiett (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) will play British Captain Thomas Leonard in the upcoming season 3 of Starz drama Outlander.

Chelsea Hobbs (Make It or Break It) will recur on season 3 of Lifetime’s UnReal, as a talented new camera assistant.

Nathalie Kelley (UnReal) will play one of the leads in The CW’s Dynasty reboot: Cristal, a Hispanic marrying into a powerful WASP family.

Alfonso Ribeiro will host UP’s “AFV Super Fail Sunday” beginning at 1p on Sunday, February 5. The day will include memorable America’s Funniest Videos super fails, falls, slips and hits.

ADVERTISING

Proving ROI for data-driven campaigns continues to be a challenge for marketers. About 45 percent of respondents in a new study published by the Interactive Advertising Bureau said they are struggling with the ROI issue, versus 26 percent last year. Other serious hurdles noted: talent gaps and organizational structures not suited to support modern data applications. That said, 67 percent of those surveyed said their organizations increased spending on data and related services in 2016 versus the prior year, and 71 percent said they expect to their spending to grow in 2017.

Jim Norton, chief business officer and president of revenue at Conde Nast, was elected chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Scott Schiller, EVP-GM of marketing, advertising sales & client partnerships at NBCUniversal, is the new vice chairman.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Amazon ordered a third and final season of Red Oaks, and a fourth season of Mozart in the Jungle. Both are slated to premiere later in 2017.

A+E Networks launched direct-to-consumer SVOD service HISTORY Vault on Xfinity On Demand, offering a curated collections for history junkies.Content will include a wide range of History programming including series such as America The Story of Us and Engineering an Empire, documentaries like Gettysburg and Alcatraz: Search for the Truth and collections on topics such as ancient civilizations, The World Wars, space exploration, The Bible, legendary leaders, the Dark Ages and America’s western frontier.

GOING GLOBAL

In response to Discovery Communications’ warning last week that it would yank its 12 channels from Sky unless the Euro pay-TV company offers a “fair price,” Sky said that while “we love Discovery,” they are prepared to lose the channels. “It is Discovery’s choice to do this, not ours,” said Sky. “We never left the negotiating table and they haven’t come back to it.” Discovery Networks UK managing director Susanna Dinnage noted that the company is being paid less by Sky now than it was 10 years ago.

Hell’s Kitchen boss Gordon Ramsay is producing a daily cooking competition show, Culinary Genius, and a primetime documentary series through his Studio Ramsay. ITV has picked up 20 episodes of Genius. The cantankerous chef will also take a turn as host of ITV’s new limited-run daily talk show, The Nightly Show, airing for eight weeks with eight different hosts.

Cartoon Network and Boomerang  are launching on Australia’s Fetch TV, with animated shows including Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo. Turner’s two global flagship children’s channels are available now on the IPTV service.

Greek network Skai commissioned a local version of singing reality entertainment format La Banda, developed by Syco Entertainment and Saban Brands. The deal was struck with FremantleMedia International and Syco Entertainment.

Studiocanal has sold Swedish-French drama Midnight Sun and Harlan Coben’s 10-part thriller The Five to Africa’s M-Net.

RATINGS

The January 24 episode of NBC freshman hit This Is Us rose 67 percent from Live+SD to live+3, to a record 4.72 million, and from 9.6 million total viewers to 14.6 million with delayed viewing.

TV Land’s Teachers set series high Live+3 ratings, with .57 among A25-54 (up 22 percent) and .51 among A18-49 (up 38 percent) for the second episode of the new season. The median age for the show is 46, down 13 years versus channel prime and 7 years younger than the previous week’s episode.

Across five telecasts on January 21 and 22, Lifetime’s Beaches delivered 5.5 million total viewers in Live+3 viewing, according to Nielsen. The film drew 2.6 million A25-54, 2.2 million A18-49, 2 million W 25-54 and 1.7 million W18-49.

WGN America’s Outsiders grew its audience to 2.5 million total viewers in Live+3 delivery on premiere night last Tuesday, an increase of 12 percent over the season one average among total viewers and 10 percent in its core demo, A25-54.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Andrew Bennett has left his position as Global CEO Havas Creative Group and Havas Worldwide, replaced by Havas Group CEO Yannick Bollore. “I would like to thank Andrew for the fantastic job he has done in implementing our ‘Together’ strategy and building the organization to what it is today,” said Bollore.

The CW has reorganized its development team under Thom Sherman, Executive Vice President, who leads the network’s series development and alternative programming, as well as specials.Gaye Hirsch, Senior Vice President, Scripted Development, oversees the network’s scripted series development, supervising a team including Laura Terry who joins The CW as Director, Scripted Development, and Collin Sapera, who has been promoted to Manager, Scripted Development. In the network’s alternative division, Cyle Zezo has been promoted to Manager, Alternative Series, Specials, and Digital Programming. Sherman continues to oversee all development for The CW’s primetime series, including scripted series development, alternative programming, and specials.

Danielle Rossen has been promoted to Vice President, Unscripted Production at Lincoln Square Productions. A 21-year veteran of ABC, Rossen will oversee all unscripted fare.

Showtime Networks tapped veteran writer and editor Jon Weisman to fill the newly created role of Vice President, Corporate Public Relations. Most recently, Weisman served as Director, Digital and Print Content for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A+E Networks appointed Youngsun Soh as General Manager, A+E Networks Korea. Soh comes to A+E Networks from Twitter Korea, where she served as Market Director.

Entertainment Studios appointed Ira Goldklang as Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs. Goldklang was most recently Vice President of Legal Affairs at Sony Pictures Animation.

UK’s Screenchannel Television hired Katie Boyd joins as the independent producer’s first Creative Director. Boyd has worked ona string of major factual and factual-entertainment series for several of the UK’s top production companies.

Fox Broadcasting Company elevated Brittainy Roberts to Vice President, Casting. Roberts joined Fox’s casting department as Manager in 2011, and was promoted to Director in 2013.

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises named Fabrizio Alcobe Senior Vice President of Human Resources. One of Alcobe’s key priorities this year will be to bring the workforces of Telemundo Network, Telemundo Studios, NBC Universo, Telemundo Digital Media, Telemundo International and NBCUniversal International into the recently announced global headquarters in Florida. Most recently, Alcobe was SVP of Administration for Univision Networks.

George Blue has joined Brightline as Chief Revenue Officer. Blue had been instrumental in growing the Fox Digital Entertainment sales staff.
