IN THE NEWS

Media General accepted an offer from Nexstar Broadcasting that would create an entity with 171 stations in 100 markets, reaching 39 percent of U.S. television households, pending regulatory approval. “We intend to implement our proven strategy of focusing on local programming and effective digital media marketing solutions across the assets being acquired,” said Nexstar CEO Perry Sook. Meredith, which had struck its own deal to merge with Media General in September, wound up with a $60 million break-up fee.

“We can’t give in to terrorizations toward any of our employees,” read a statement from Fox News following Donald Trump’s announcement that he was dropping out of tonight’s GOP debate. The network said Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski threatened to cause trouble for Megyn Kelly if she wasn’t removed as moderator. Lewandowski “was warned not to level any more threats, but he continued to do so,” said FNC. Trump was still welcome at the debate, added the network, “but he can’t dictate the moderators or the questions.” Responded Trump via Twitter: “I refuse to call Megyn Kelly a bimbo, because that would not be politically correct. Instead I will only call her a lightweight reporter!” Last word goes to Kelly, who told Extra on Wednesday, “I will be surprised he if doesn’t show up.”

Will dropping out of tonight’s GOP debate help or hurt Donald Trump? Let us know what you think in the new Cynopsis poll.

PactUS president David Lyle (former CEO of National Geographic Channels) was working his way up and back down the East Coast when Cynopsis caught up with him in New York this week. Lyle is meeting with executives to bring them up to speed on what the nascent association is offering to its growing membership. Before coming to snow-covered Manhattan (“I should have brought more than one pair of shoes”), Lyle was working the cabanas and NATPE conference floor in Miami Beach. What’s the message? “In today’s swirling environment, the companies who will emerge victorious will be the ones that are best prepared to take advantage of new opportunities as soon as they emerge,” Lyle tells Cynopsis. “In that spirit, PactUS aims to provide our members with a host of insights and information with regards to, but not limited to, sponsorship openings, business and legal issues and international opportunities. We also lobby local and state governments as well as industry leaders to ensure scripted and unscripted TV production is recognized for the powerful economic driver that it is.” For more, go here.

TV nominees for the 27th Annual GLAAD Awards include Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Faking It, Grace and Frankie, Looking, Master of None, Modern Family, Orange Is the New Black, Please Like Me, Transparent and Vicious for comedy series, and Arrow, Black Sails, Empire, The Fosters, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, Nashville, Orphan Black, Sense8 and Shameless for drama. Winners will be announced at ceremonies April 2 at the Beverly Hilton and May 14 at NYC’s Waldorf-Astoria. Logo will televise the awards as a one-hour special.

El Rey Network released the first of four one-shot comic books based on wrestling series Lucha Underground. The next three comics will be released biweekly and to help bridge story lines in between seasons and offer new information into the lives of Vampiro, Catrina, Mil Muertes, and notorious owner and promoter Dario Cueto, among others.

Noting that the cost of cable set-top boxes has risen by 185 percent over the past 20 years while the cost of computers and TVs has dropped by 90 percent, FCC chairman Tom Wheeler unveiled a proposal that would require pay TV distributors to let independent manufacturers create devices that can unencrypt shows and blend pay TV programming with streaming service content. “Just as consumers shop at retail for a smartphone today, and they can choose to purchase a wireless router instead of leasing one from their provider, consumers will have the same choice to use a competitive device with a third-party app if they choose,” said Wheeler. The newly formed, 47-member Future of TV Coalition, including the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and American Cable Association, called foul, arguing the move “would force programmers and TV providers to dismantle their shows and services for [manufacturers]to repackage, reuse, and exploit without negotiating for the rights like everybody else in the market does today.”

Travels With Darley, a video short form series on AOL, is moving to broadcast. The travel series produced by DCN Creative has launched on PBS stations with eight half-hours. “As we film, we’re constantly thinking of ways to utilize our content in diverse mediums, whether it’s a digital short or half hour episode,” said DCN co-founder Darley Newman. “The experiential, authentic nature of each story and high-quality, visually appealing content engages today’s savvy viewer on a variety of platforms in a personal, authentic way.”

Kato Kaelin is hosting a talk show with long-time friend Will Stumpe called Sports Haters, reports EW. Clarified Kaelin, who became a household name as a witness in the 1994-1995 murder trial of O.J. Simpson, “We don’t hate sports. We hate the stupid stuff that goes with it. Like back-to-back Viagra commercials.” The show will stream on FilmOn.com starting Saturday, January 30, with Saturday night airings on Dish Network’s FOTV.

Viceland, the Vice culture and lifestyle cable channel launching February 29, offered a peek at upcoming programming (Gaycation, Weediquette, Balls Deep, among others). “It feels like most channels are just a collection of shows,” said Spike Jonze, the new net’s creative director. “We wanted Viceland to be different, to feel like everything on there has a reason to exist and a strong point of view. ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Thanks to a strong scatter market, total national advertising for 4Q15 will rise 4.4 percent to $10.8 billion for major broadcast and cable network groups, according to MoffettNathanson Research. AMC Networks is looking at a 15 percent bump (to $274 million), Disney cable nets can expect a 14.3 percent hike (to $1.4 billion), CBS should get a 5.6 percent lift (to $1.29 billion), and NBC will rise 5 percent (to $1.74 billion). Other winners in the forecast: Scripps (up 6.5 percent to $472 million), Time Warner (up 6.0 percent to $1.0 billion), Discovery Communications (up 4 percent to $410 million), Fox cable nets (up 3.5 percent to $514 million) and NBCUniversal (up 1 percent to $1.01 billion). “A robust scatter market…is offsetting some pockets of continued weak rating trends,” said the report.

Amazon is running its first Super Bowl ad, reports AdWeek. The spot stars Alec Baldwin in his first Big Game commercial since 2009’s for Hulu, along with NFL superstar Dan Marino, and touts Amazon’s Alexa-powered connected speaker, Echo.

La-Z-Boy and Lyrica are sponsoring “All Heart” programming on RLTV, the net for adults 50+. The first week of February, RLTV celebrates American Heart Month with heart-healthy episodes from series like Growing Bolder and Whole Body Health, while the week leading into Valentine’s Day will focus on relationships, romance and recipes.
