Over 175 WGA comedy/variety scribes signed a petition pushing ITV to enter a collective bargaining agreement that would protect its writers/ producers for nonfiction. By refusing to agree, said the petition, ITV is “showing the back of its hand to us, the men and women who would write comedy/variety shows for ITV – in particular, the men and women ITV apparently expects to write a major new series for NBC starring Neil Patrick Harris.” The WGA has warned it will not allow its members to work on the variety show, announced in October, without a contract; Harris tweeted on November 4, “I’ve been assured by ITV that it will be a WGA show.”
IN THE NEWS
The ex-employee of a Fox-owned station in Austin, TX shot fatally shot himself in the chest outside News Corp.’s midtown Manhattan headquarters on Monday. The man, identified as Phillip Perea, had been handing out fliers criticizing his former employer. A suicide note was found in his pocket, said police. In a memo to employees, Fox Television Stations CEO Jack Abernathy said Perea “was employed at our Austin television station for ten months and has not been with the station or FTS since June 2014. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy."
The 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards is getting an extra half hour to celebrate its golden anniversary. The dick clark productions show is set to broadcast live from Arlington TX on Sunday, April 19 from 8p-11:30p, with performances honoring “seven superstars who have achieved significant milestones in ACM history.”
The winner of season 11 of Fox’s American Idol has filed a complaint with the California Labor Commissioner, seeking to void his contract with 19 Entertainment. Phillip Phillips’ petition contends the deal is “oppressive,” and violates the state’s Talent Agencies Act. “I am very grateful for the opportunities provided to me through appearing on American Idol,” says the singer, whose post-Idol hits have included Home and Gone, Gone, Gone. “However, I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with.”
Today’s Savannah Guthrie will conduct the pre-Super Bowl presidential chat live on Sunday, February 1, with an additional taped interview slated to air Monday, February 2 on her NBC morning show. Last year, Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly did the honors.
Guests for NBC’s post-game Tonight Show special, airing live from the Orpheum Theater February 1 after The Blacklist and local news, include Get Hard co-stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart (doing lip sync battle with host Jimmy Fallon), and Ariana Grande performing with The Roots.
Taking home SAG awards: Downton Abbey for drama, Orange Is the New Black for comedy, Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) for actor and actress in a drama, and William H. Macey (Shameless) and Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) for actor and actress in a comedy. Mark Ruffalo (who tweeted his thanks from London for The Normal Heart) and Frances McDormand (Olive Kitteridge) took acting honors in a TV movie or miniseries, and the stunt performers from Game of Thrones won for television stunt ensemble.
Orange Is the New Black and Shameless switched from drama to comedy awards categories. Is that where they belong? Vote in the new Cynopsis poll.

COMING UP
Leave it to ID. Sex Sent Me to the Slammer, sharing stories of couples caught with their pants down, launches with back-to-back eps at 10p Friday, February 6 – just in time for Valentine’s Day. The series “is definitely not part of ID’s public affairs initiative,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President, Discovery Networks, but “there’s no better time to play these amorous accounts of adventurous lovers than as we approach the most romantic day of the year.”
Competing with ID for eye-catching title of the day is FYI’s My City’s Just Not That Into Me, premiering Wednesday, March 4 at 10p. The series, a partnership with Curbed.com, matches house seekers priced out of their current cities with different parts of the country they might want to call home.
The season three return of TV One’s R&B Divas LA brings two new faces: new artist Christina “Brave” Williams and Stacy Francis, seeing to transition from theater to R&B. Launch date: Wednesday, February 11 at 10p with an 11p encore.
Want Company on Valentine’s Day? Tribune Media multicast broadcast net Antenna TV marks February 14 with a 14-hour marathon of Three’s Company, starting at 1p.
Home chefs compete for a $50,000 prize on Food Network’s All-Star Academy, launching Sunday, March 1 at 9p. But it’s not just about the money – part of the reward is the other cooks in the kitchen. Having chefs like Bobby Flay, Alex Guarnaschelli and Curtis Stone as mentors is “the dream of a lifetime for a home cook,” said Bob Tuschman, GM and SVP Programming, Food Network.
GSN is launching 40 new episodes of word association game show Chain Reaction in 2015, the first since 2007. Sony Pictures Television is producing.
BRANDS AND ADVERTISING
BMW’s “Newfangled” Super Bowl ad plays with a 1994 exchange between Today hosts Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric as they wonder, “What is Internet, anyway? Do you write to it like mail?” 21 years later, the pair marvels over the auto company’s all-electric i3 (“What is i3, anyway?”). The ad from Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal + Partners was released Monday (“You know me, I love to make fun of myself,” Couric told Matt Lauer on Today). Bonus: outtakes!
Advertisers would do well to refocus on multiscreen TV, suggests a report from the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau that uses Nielsen and ComScore data to show where consumer attention is distributed among video advertising options. Examples: HGTV’s Property Brothers’ total monthly impressions for September 2014 bested the top ten YouTube channels combined, and Food Network topped all monthly viewer of all YouTube channels. “AdTech video can be a brilliant extension of a multiscreen TV plan and campaign,” concludes the report, “but it is not a substitute, surrogate or replacement for the massive attention that multiscreen TV attracts.”
DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE
As of November 2014, INSP was available in 80.3 million households in the U.S., according to Nielsen. Of the 114 networks measured by Nielsen, INSP reports it was one of only 28 that increased in HH.
Sundance Channel Global acquired five independent films from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Chorus, Chlorine, The Amina Profile, The Strongest Man and Christmas, Again will premiere on Sundance Channel in spring 2015.
