Measurement was the hot topic at the Cynopsis Ratings Master Class in NYC yesterday. Turner CRO Howard Shimmel opened the proceedings with the observation that “we’re in a measurement crisis” (he was more optimistic by the end of a lay-of-the-land talk that was referenced numerous times over the course of the day). Nielsen’s Kelly Abcarian, SVP global watch product architecture and Jay Nielsen, senior director, product leadership, took the audience through Nielsen’s total audience measurement advances that enable measurement across platforms; later in the day, comScore SVP, television research Jeff Boehme talked about using audience segmentation to optimize media investment.

Notes from the day:
Presenting case studies from Deep Root, CEO Brent McGoldrick noted that in 2012, 80 percent of Prius owners voted for Obama….”Don’t just acquire fans, fuel fandom,” urged Alec McNayr, co-founder and CCO, McBeard….52 percent of all U.S. Internet homes have at least on connected TV, said Zak Soreff, president of Sawyer Studios, adding “Let’s be smart about how we talk to Internet connected devices”; “Be on the right platform at the right time,” advised Trina Pepe,  executive director, integrated marketing, Freeform; “Buying on age and demo is like watching TV in black and white,” said Samba TV  CEO Ashwin Nevin; Shareablee CEO Tania Yuki suggested “looking under the hood” for actionable insights.

The event closed with a fireside chat between Jane Clarke, CEO and managing director of Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement, and George Ivie, CEO and executive director of Media Rating Council. Asked by Clarke what the MRC’s biggest job is in 2017, Ivie replied that auditing and setting digital measurement standards will require “about as much work as I can imagine.”
