CYNOPSIS
01.26.15

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 26, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
BBC America: Top Gear at 8:30p, Mud, Sweat and Gears at 10p
Fox Business: Strange Inheritance at 9p
HGTV: Ellen’s Design Challenge at 9p
PBS: A Path Appears at 10p
Science: The Manipulation Game at 10p
Travel: Bizarre Foods, Delicious Destinations at 9p

NBC picked up two trophies at Saturday’s 2015 Producers Guild of America Awards in LA: The Voice (NBC) for competition television, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (NBC) for live entertainment and talk. Rounding out the other TV categories were Orange Is the New Black (Netflix) for comedy, Cosmos: A Space Odyssey (Fox/NatGeo) for non-fiction TV and Sesame Street (PBS) for outstanding children’s program. As previously announced, HBO’s The Normal Heart was honored with the Stanley Kramer Award for raising awareness of important social issues.

IN THE NEWS

David Letterman takes a turn as guest on CBS’s Late Late Show on Tuesday, January 27, with Regis Philbin in the host seat. The late nighter, from Letterman’s Worldwide Pants, is using guest hosts to fill the void between the exit of Craig Ferguson last December, and James Corden’s start on March 23.

NBCUniversal is pulling out of pay TV in Russia. “Due to the challenging economic environment for our pay-TV channels (Universal Channel and E! Entertainment Television) in Russia, Universal Networks International has made the decision to no longer operate in the market and is looking at alternative opportunities for its channels’ business,” said the company, adding that it “remains committed” to the Russian market, with Universal Pictures International and NBCUniversal International Television Distribution continuing operations there. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a bill effective January 1 banning commercials on Russian pay TV.

Season four of Discovery reality show Amish Mafia, launching Tuesday, February 10 at 9p, will be its last. The series, which has been criticized for misrepresenting the Amish, is “not really being consistent with Rich Ross’s vision for the network,” Laurie Goldberg, group EVP of public relations, told Multichannel News. New net president Ross told reporters at TCA earlier this month, “The most important thing is authenticity.”

Heading the Auschwitz: The Past Is Present committee is David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications. The aim of the group – which also includes Steven Spielberg, Barry Diller, Les Moonves and Jeff Zucker, among others – is to further the voice of the dwindling numbers of Holocaust survivors by creating ongoing education programs. “Holocaust survivors have carried the burden of sharing their testimony for decades. As time passes and we continue to lose more of these witnesses, it becomes imperative that we extend their voices to drive awareness and remembrance of the Holocaust for future generations,” Zaslav tells Cynopsis. “As we continue to face ethnic and religious intolerance around the world, it is our hope that by preserving the voices of Auschwitz survivors and creating initiatives to educate today’s youth, we are helping to ensure that such brutalities are never repeated and never forgotten.”

A partially-shot HBO documentary from Martin Scorsese about Bill Clinton has stalled, according to the New York Times, because the former POTUS wants more control over the project than the Oscar-winning director is willing to cede. Said HBO, “It’s not happening soon but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen.” Likely complicating matters is Hillary Clinton’s potential 2016 run for the Oval Office.

A Teamsters strike that could have impacted television commercial production in 14 western states was averted when the union ratified a deal covering drivers and location managers. “This is good news for the industry and good news for our members,” said Local 399 secretary-treasurer Steve Dayan.

Outdoor Channel handed out 17 trophies at its 15th Annual Golden Moose Awards on Thursday. Presenters include former Vice Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin (Amazing America with Sarah Palin) and Gerald McRaney (House of Cards and the net’s Ram Outdoorsman), and singer (and winner for Fan Favorite Best Host, for Spirit in the Wild) Ted Nugent, who performed. Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Harold Knight and David Hale of Ultimate Hunting.

Turner kids net Boomerang has a new look, part of an overall global rebrand that started last year. The channel launched in the U.S. in April 2000.

COMING UP

Tired of all the yakking about that deflated football? Hallmark Channel’s Kitten Bowl II, offers another kind of pre-game action, starting with its (cuteness overload alert!) Cat Center. Host Beth Stern makes the round of national talk shows this week to drum up excitement for the furry footballers, and Feline Fantasy League trading cards featuring all of this year’s players (the likes of Tawny Unitas, Joe Fluffo and Ryan FitzCatrick) will be featured on Hallmark Channel’s Facebook page. Games begin Sunday, February 1 at 12p, with viewers invited to share photos of their favorite critters watching the faceoff using #KittenBowl.

Reality series Strange Inheritance launches on Fox Business Network today.  The show about bizarre bequests will air Monday-Thursdays at 9p, with new episodes debuting every Monday and Tuesday. Strange Inheritance Unpacked, a behind-the-scenes look at each story, will run Wednesdays and Thursday sat 9:30p. To accommodate the new shows, The Independents shifts to 10p weekdays, with Stossel moving to Fridays at 9p. Cavuto stays put at 8p.

Spike TV puts the focus on fisticuffs in monthly series Premier Boxing Champions, launching Friday, March 13 at 9p. In addition to the fights, programming designed to energize the sport’s fan base will showcase the boxers. “The fighters are the stars,” said Spike president Kevin Kay. “We will give them a platform to demonstrate why they are among greatest and most exciting athletes in the world.”

The search for lost gold – $200 million worth – is the focus of an upcoming History series. Legend of the Superstition Mountains, from Go Go Luckey Entertainment, debuts Sunday, February 8 at 10p, with five fortune hunters emboldened by new evidence that a 500-year-old treasure exists.

Working with Ellen DeGeneres and her A Very Good Production team was “a real joy,” Arthur Smith, exec producer from A. Smith & Co. for HGTV’s Ellen’s Design Show, tells Cynopsis. “In spite of her busy schedule, Ellen stayed very connected to the production.” As for the series, launching tonight at 9p, “Even though this is a serious competition, the show has a great does of fun and showmanship,” says Smith. “Viewers will love the elements of competition, original design, creativity and fun.”

Corbin Bernsen (L.A. Law) wrote, directed and stars in Up romantic comedy Christian Mingle: The Movie, bowing Sunday, February 8 at 7. Lacey Chabert (Party of Five) plays a marketing exec looking for Mr. Right online.

TLC, home of Little People, Big World, is again exploring everyday life inside a family led by parents with a form of dwarfism. In Our Little Family, all three young children also are little. Promises the net, “With a house full of vivacious personalities and tons of laughter, the family faces any challenge thrown their way,” starting Tuesday, February 17 at 10p.

Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials airs tonight at 8p on CBS. What to expect? This year’s theme for the fan-voted spot is “New School versus Old School,” with classics like Coke’s 1980 “Mean Joe” spot competing against contemporary faves like Budweiser’s “Brotherhood” from 2013. Viewers vote for their favorites here. The Super Bowl is “the only network show where viewers who DVR the program often fast forward through the game just to watch the commercials,” Juma Entertainment’s Robert Horowitz tells Cynopsis. “That’s why for 15 years the commercials have had their own show.” Juma and IMG produce.

Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath hosts the 2015 Grammy Prediction Special on AXS TV. Industry experts rate the chances of this year’s crop of nominees on Tuesday, February 3 at 10p.

The transformation of backyards from high and dry to lush oases is chronicled in Animal Planet’s Insane Pools: Off the Deep End. Viewers can dive into the series Friday, February 20 at 9p.

Do you watch the Super Bowl for the game, the ads or the halftime show? Tell us in the poll at Cynopsis.com.

RETURNING SHOWS

Viewers will have a peek at Elvis Presley’s autos (including a Stutz Blackhawk and the van the King used to sneak out of Graceland) in the season two debut Americarna, roaring back to Velocity with back-to-back eps Tuesday, February 17 starting at 10p. “This season is the ultimate car guy’s take on American cultural history,” said Velocity GM Robert Scanlon.

The eighth and final season of NatGeo’s Alaska State Troopers premieres Wednesday, February 11 at 9p. The season is dedicated to the memories of four officers profiled during the course of the series: Troopers Tage Toll and Gabe Rich, killed in action in March 2013 during a Helo-1 search and rescue mission to save an injured snowmachiner, and Sgt. Scott Johnson and Trooper Pilot Mel Nading, killed in the line of duty while responding to a call in a remote Alaskan village in May 2014.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Brands unwilling or unable to pony up $4.5 million for a Super Bowl ad might take some comfort from the 2015 Brand Keys Super Bowl Ad Engagement Survey, which predicts only 46 percent of the brands running ads in this year’s game will entertain and engage viewers enough to drive consumer behavior. “Brands need to entertain if they want buzz, but today, if brands want to see real ROI, it isn’t enough just to entertain consumers,” said Robert Keys, founder and president of consumer loyalty research consultancy Brand Keys. “Consumers need to be emotionally engaged with ads.” Hitting the sweet spot this year will be BMW, Doritos, Dove Men + Care, GoDaddy, Mercedes, Nissan, Paramount Pictures, Pepsi, Skittles, Snickers, Toyota and WeatherTech, projects the company.

Golden opportunity: Princess Cruises is the first sponsor of WE tv’s WatchW/In initiative, offering viewer incentives designed to promote immediate social conversations and deliver viewing within the three-day ratings window. The Princess brand will be integrated into on-air promotional spots during premiere episodes of the David Tutera Celebrations airing Fridays at 10; viewers who enter a code word at wetv.com will be entered to win a seven-day Caribbean cruise. “With Princess Cruises celebrating its golden 50th anniversary this year through a variety of special onboard experiences, this show tie-in was a natural fit,” said Gordon Ho, SVP of marketing and North American sales.

Richard Lewis (Curb Your Enthusiasm) is onboard Starz comedy Blunt Talk, from Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy) and Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death). Series stars Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation).
