USA: Suits at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
CW: Frequency at 9p

IN THE NEWS

Netflix could start muscling cable networks out of reality series, suggests a new report from MoffettNathanson. “SVOD players have started to show interest in buying non-fiction content which could start to put pressure on the bigger non-fiction cable networks,” said the report. “Netflix has continuously emphasized increasing original content. However, given the high cost of scripted originals, Netflix will need to incorporate more unscripted content in these efforts. As a result, Netflix (and the other SVOD players) will start to bid away name brand non-fiction shows from cable networks.” In related news, Netflix ordered 8 episodes of a “reimagining” of Bravo makeover series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, starting production in the spring.

Total deal volume in the entertainment, media and communications industries during 4Q16 was a record-setter, generating the highest deal value in almost three years, according PwC’s new Outlook Deals Insights report. The deals demonstrate two key themes, said PwC: “The first being the race for content has continued unabated, and non-traditional owners of content, such as Telecom companies, are willing to pay a premium to pair distribution channels with content ownership.” The second theme? “The continued interest in Chinese buyers in U.S. media assets.”

Telemundo actors will be able to vote on whether they want to be represented by SAG-AFTRA in contract negotiations, following a decision by the National Labor Relations Board.  The union had petitioned the NLRB for the vote, claiming the Spanish-language network paid its performers less than sibling NBC pays its English-language actors. “Since SAG-AFTRA first approached us about a year ago, we have invited them to ask for an NLRB election,” said Telemundo in a statement. “We are pleased the union now has done this, so that our talent will be able to make a decision for themselves on whether to be represented.” The vote, done by secret ballot, will take place February 7-March 8.

Surprise! Millennials (A18-34) don’t like being told what to do. The demo accounts for 43 percent of cordless consumers who have either never had cable, satellite or fiber optic TV service, or have cut the cord, according to GfK MRI’s Survey of the American Consumer. This group spends 65 percent of their viewing time streaming via a TV set or other device, versus 36 percent for Baby Boomers, who spend 56 percent of their viewing time watching live TV over the airwaves. “One in three Millennials is living without a cord  so understanding this population is a major priority for advertisers and marketers,” said Karen Ramspacher, SVP of consumer insights & trends at GfK MRI. “These viewers are huge fans of quality programming and content  but they are not fond of being told where, when and how they should watch it.”

Bravo and Buzzfeed are teaming to promote Bravo’s Imposters, launching Tuesday, February 7 at 10p. Valentine’s-themed content will include a custom 360 video experience, “Are You Dating an Imposter?”, which debuts on the show’s premiere date. Bravo parent NBCUniversal has a $400 million investment in Buzzfeed.

In case you haven’t heard, President Donald Trump continues to attack the media for being unfair to him. True, or alternative fact? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nat Geo VP, production Matt Renner gave Cynopsis a glimpse into the making of the current untitled doc it commissioned from author/journalist Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Strom) from the ground in Syria and Iraq. And it isn’t for the faint of heart. An early clip he showed at Realscreen depicts footage shot on an iPhone of a family of eight huddled under a tarp in the back of a truck crossing out from Syrian border. “As long as National Geographic is in business we’re going to be singularly focused on working with filmmakers and photographers and storytellers around the world to get to those hard to reach places, and to intelligently design a production plan to keep you as safe as you possibly can be,” Renner told Cynopsis. That plan includes working with compliance lawyers with intimate knowledge of the regions and companies with access to special ops. “One of the key questions is, What’s the evacuation plan if you’re in this area on this day and date?,” he said. While no one under the company’s direct employment has died, Renner said three freelance journalists working alongside the Nat Geo team in the area were killed. “That is the tragedy, we couldn’t give them the same kind of support system we [had]. But at the same time our filmmakers waiting on the borders knew that if something should happen, there is an outlet.”

Having proper support in place is of utmost important to Junger, Renner said, particularly since his friend and collaborator Tim Hetherington died in 2011 after being hit with shrapnel while covering rebel forces in Misrata, Libya. Junger founded RISC (Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues), a center that provides training in areas from hostage negotiation to medic training, as well as deconditioning support. “When we go out there to commission a program, it’s to give someone a voice that doesn’t have a voice,” Renner said. “There’s a tremendous risk and cost to that sometimes, but we need to keep taking those risks because those stories need to be told.” The new Junger doc is tentatively scheduled to air in Q4.

NBC ordered a pilot for a comedy from Seth Meyers, SNL’s Mike O’Brien and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video about a cynical high school biology teacher who uses students to plot revenge on people who wronged him. O’Brien will write.

The Peacock net also ordered a pilot for a virtual reality drama from Mickey Fisher and Amblin TV (Extant). Reverie focuses on a former detective specializing in human behavior, drawn in when a VR program has dangerous consequences. And NBC greenlit game show pilot 5 Gold Rings, to be produced by ITV Entertainment, based on a UK format.

ABC is developing a comedy for Gabriel Iglesias. The project, from Ryan Seacrest Productions and CBS Television Studios, centers on a commitment-averse bachelor who reconnects with a pal who just broke up with the woman he’s been with since pre-school. Iglesias also stars in and exec produces Fuse’s Fluffy’s Food Adventures.

On the drama front, ABC ordered pilots for Doomsday, about a think tank recruited to prevent man-made disasters and The Good Doctor, centered on a young surgeon with savant syndrome, both from Sony Pictures Television.

Fox ordered a pilot for a Marvel action adventure from Matt Nix (Burn Notice), 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television. Drama centers on two parents whose children possess mutant powers.

ADVERTISING

TV ad spend increased 4.4 percent in 2016, according to Standard Media Index. NBC was the big leader in broadcast, up 20 percent, followed by CBS, up 3.2 percent. ABC and Fox dipped 2.2 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively. Not surprisingly this election year, the big winners on cable were news nets CNN, up 57.8 percent, and Fox News, up 25.7 percent.

More from SMI: In 4Q16, digital spend slowed to a rise of 7.1 percent, with some media dollars returning to TV. “Retail, telcos, and consumer electronics have not seen the outcomes they expected from digital and have moved back to the medium they have trusted for decades,” said James Fennessy, CEO of SMI.

Cynopsis will be honoring the industry’s top advertising talent at the Buyers & Planners Awards celebration in NYC on February 7. Who are our all-star nominees? Today’s nod goes to Niki DeCou, brand group director, Horizon Media.

Cynopsis: What is the biggest challenge facing the advertising community today?

Niki DeCou: Acknowledging and managing the disconnect between what’s happening with consumers and their media habits and the limitations of planning, buying and measurement tools, and determining where and how to test and take risks without all of the information we would like to have.

Cynopsis: What kind of education or experience helped prepare you for your job? DeCou: Because our industry is so dynamic, I think that the ability to think critically about the myriad of opportunities thrown at you every day and the confidence to ask questions and then determine your own point of view is key. Like any business, relating to people and finding common ground is also important. If you have built those fundamentals through education and life experiences, the rest is being open minded and willing to learn every day.

Cynopsis: What do you find most rewarding about working at Horizon?

DeCou: It’s always about the people. Working with smart, knowledgeable, experienced people who are humble enough to learn from each other is a pretty awesome team and culture to be a part of. And that goes for colleagues and clients alike. The culture really enables true partnerships with clients, which are the most rewarding thing you can have in this business.

Cynopsis: And of course, what are you wearing to the Cynopsis Awards?

DeCou: If I had my way, jeans and Nike air maxes.

For questions about the event, which will also includes the inaugural TV Awards, please email Jenn@Cynopsis.com.
