CYNOPSISSPORTS
01.22.16

Good morning. It’s Friday January 22, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Facebook bulked up its role as a prominent player in the sports media space, launching its first-ever sports product, entitled Facebook Sports Stadium. The platform will look to harness its 650 million sports fans with a real-time experience that will blend comments from friends; posts and commentary from experts, including teams, leagues and journalists; live scores, stats and a play-by-play; as well as information such as tune-in times and location. The product will cross all sports and is launching just ahead of this weekend’s NFL Conference Championships before expanding to basketball, soccer, and other sports in the US with other countries on deck later.

“Third party research says that Facebook is already the primary second screen for television broadcasts, including live sports events,” said Dan Reed, Facebook’s Head of Global Sports Partnerships. “When you combine this along with the inherently social nature of sports, it results in the massive real-time global conversations we are seeing on Facebook around major sporting events, such as the 350 million people who connected on Facebook during the World Cup, or the 65 million unique people who joined the social conversation during last year’s Super Bowl. The Facebook Sports Stadium is designed to further enhance this second screen experience on Facebook by giving sports fans the feeling they’re watching the game with their friends in real-time, even when they’re not together.”

ON THE AIR

Winter’s whiplash is rejiggering a slate of games on the east coast as teams look to dodge the expected snowstorm about to hit the mid-Atlantic. The NHL already announced that tonight’s Ducks/Capitals game was been swapped to 5p due to the weather, while the team’s matchup with the Penguins on Sunday (which is set to be carried on NBC) is still up in the air. In college basketball, Saturday’s Providence/Villanova contest is being shifted to Sunday at 12:30p where is will air on FOX. In addition, the ACC moved Saturday’s Virginia/Syracuse to Sunday at 7p. Other reports have Friday’s George Washington/Rhode Island also moved earlier, and it will now take place at 7p.

Golf Channel is swinging deeper into the PGA Merchandise Show, announcing plans for 25 hours of on-air coverage of the annual event, marking the most-ever coverage of the show. From Jan. 26-29, the network will showcase live interviews with industry leaders and an overview of the products and trends for 2016, including new lines of equipment and apparel. “Demo Day” programming launched on Tuesday at 7a with Morning Drive on-site and interviews with PGA President Derek Sprague and PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua. Production will feature three set configurations, a putting green and a golf simulator and incorporate production elements such as “Fly Cam.”

FOX Sports and Red Bull Media House are lining up 30 hours of Red Bull Global Sports Series content in 2016. Properties will include the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship, Red Bull Air Race World Championship, Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series and Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour. Programming takes off with the Crashed Ice brand on Saturday at 11:30a on FS1. Last year, the Red Bull Global Sports Series saw a 23% year-over-year viewership uptick for all telecasts across the FOX family of networks.

In case you missed yesterday’s early deadline, you can still enter into our 5th Annual Cynopsis Sports Awards program. Be sure to submit by next Thursday, Jan 28th: http://www.cynopsis.com/event/2015-sma

The NHL announced that country music stars Dierks Bentley, Vince Gill, Charles Kelley and Chris Young will serve as celebrity coaches for the 2016 Honda NHL All-Star Game in Nashville on Jan. 31. The matchup will run live at 5p on NBCSN. Bentley, Gill, Kelley and Young will join NHL head coaches Gerard Gallant of the Florida Panthers, Lindy Ruff of the Dallas Stars, Darryl Sutter of the Los Angeles Kings and Barry Trotz of the Washington Capitals behind the bench.

BTN serves up an Iowa/Purdue battle at 1p on Sunday, just before the AFC Championship Game. Cory Provus and analyst Jon Crispin have the call, with Mike Hall reporting from the sideline. The broadcast will also feature Court Pass on BTN2Go, with a live look at the court and atmosphere in Carver-Hawkeye Arena for the hour prior to tip-off.

Nike is reportedly launching a national seven-on-seven football league, with CBS Sports writing that the outfit includes a sponsorship deal with Marriott and possibly a similar deal with an airline to transport players. The league would see five teams of approximately 25 players each taking part in two tournaments with San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Kansas City tapped as home bases. Future plans may include junior-high, junior varsity and varsity teams all under the Nike banner, according to their source.

Get ready for some serious powder this weekend. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association locked in a strategic partnership with Adore Creative to produce branding spots for the organization spotlighting its "Best in the World" mantra. Spots include the 30-second Grand Prix branding spot that will debut this weekend during NBC’s coverage of the event on Sunday featuring Olympic champions David Wise and Kelly Clark. "Crafting this TV campaign for the USSA was a real joy – when they say Best in the World, they really mean it," said Rupert Wainwright, CEO and Chief Creative Director, Adore Creative. "I mean when you get the call to film Olympic gold medallists like Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety, Mikaela Shiffrin, Kelly Clark and David Wise on the slopes at Copper Mountain, you jump. This campaign was a natural extension of our Winter Olympics experience, in both the Sochi 2014 Games and the 2022 Winter Olympics bid of Almaty." The spot can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeHTl4gQyJs.

Commissioner Roger Goodell will open the summit, followed by a keynote address by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and speakers that include the likes of Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, Annika Sorenstam and Jessica Mendoza. According to the league, the summit intends to “bring together prominent leaders from sports, government, media and a variety of other fields — all of whom believe in the power of sports to support the future success of young women both personally and professionally” in a move to “reinforce the power of sports and to encourage broad support — from men and women alike — for girls’ athletic participation.”

Continuing the theme, Rolling Stone will once again host a Super Bowl party, announcing that Avicii will perform the Big Game Bash on Feb. 6 at 9p. For the second year, Rolling Stone is partnering with Talent Resources Sports to produce the event, this time at The Galleria within the San Francisco Design Center. Beats Electronics (Beats by Dr. Dre) is now an official partner of FC Bayern Munich and will exclusively be providing the club with headphones and speakers to help their players prepare for games. "With Beats we have found an internationally recognized partner who understands the symbiotic relationship between music and sports like no other,” said Andreas Jung, Marketing Board Executive of FC Bayern Munich. Every day, our players demonstrate outstanding performance. Their mental preparation with music is just as important as their other professional training equipment. We are excited that headphones and speakers by Beats are now an integral part of the FC Bayern Munich team equipment.”
