Shooting fish in a barrel? Comedy Central is set to tape a roast of pop star/underwear model Justin Bieber. Where to start: peeing in a restaurant mop bucket? Egging his neighbor’s house? Abandoning a pet monkey in Germany? “Justin has been asking us for a few years to roast him, and we just kept telling him to go create more source material first,” said Kent Alterman, president, content development & original programming. “We’re thrilled he listened.” James Franco was the last to take the heat, in 2013.

IN THE NEWS

NBC’s promoting TV Everywhere by offering its Super Bowl coverage – halftime included! – as well as hit show The Blacklist everywhere, for free. The net is offering 11 hours of access starting at noon on February 1, no log in necessary. “We are leveraging the massive digital reach of the Super Bowl to help raise overall awareness of TV Everywhere by allowing consumers to explore our vast TVE offering with this special one-day-only access,”said Alison Moore, GM and EVP, TV Everywhere for NBCUniversal.

Viacom and ESPN failed to get a reduction in the  $1.4 million fine levied by the FCC for misuse of the Emergency Alert System warning tone. Viacom’s share is $1.2 million and ESPN owes $280,000 for transmitting the sound during promotion for the movie Olympus Has Fallen. NBCUniversal had already ponied up its $530,000 share.

Two on-air apologies on Fox News for comments by supposed terrorism expert Steve Emerson, who erroneously described Muslim “no go” zones in Europe, weren’t enough to placate the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Speaking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Tuesday, Hidalgo said, “I think we’ll have to sue, I think we’ll have to go to court….the image of Paris has been prejudiced.” Hildago also tweeted the “stupidity stigmatizing Fox News.” Responded the net: “We empathize with the citizens of France as they go through a healing process and return to everyday life. However, we find the Mayor’s comments regarding a lawsuit misplaced.”

John Walsh, longtime host of America’s Most Wanted and currently host of CNN’s The Hunt, was named spokesman and on-air talent for free-to-air multicast channel Justice Network, launched Tuesday. Walsh hosts hourly PSAs using information from law enforcement agencies about high-risk criminals and missing children. “His personal crusade for justice touched so many Americans and will be a driving force behind our network brand, public service announcements, and programming influences,” said Justice Network CEO Steve Schiffman.

Who’s watching what, and where? Part two of a joint study from NATPE Content First and the Consumer Electronics Association showed 71 percent of consumers have streamed full-length TV programs in the past six months, with Netflix (40 percent) the top source, followed by YouTube (26 percent) and network websites (25 percent). Comedy is the genre watched most regularly by Millennials, the group most likely to seek out comedy through streamed sources. Gen Xers and Boomers are most likely to watch movies (76 percent and 75 percent). Boomers have the highest affinity for live programming, including local news. Across all platforms and types of viewing, over half of the viewers surveyed (56 percent) say they are watching a greater variety of TV programming now than in the past; among Millennials the number jumps to 60 percent.

More on NATPE:

Participants at NATPE 2015 have sunny outlooks, despite the cloudy skies outside. 20th Television’s EVP & General Manager of Broadcast Sales Paul Franklin has high hopes for talker Dish Nation, just renewed for two more years. “It’s the little engine that could,” he remarks, also adding that local stations not only love that it’s day and date programming, but also that they get Ticket or Skip It!, which is customized, stand alone content for their news, websites, and social media…..USA Network’s Chrisley Knows Best snagged the trophy for best Docusoap at the conference’s first Reality Breakthrough Awards. Patriarch Todd Chrisley joked about the win, “Chase is going to say, it’s all because of Chase,” referring to his 18 year old son….Jukin Media founders Jonathan Skogmo and Josh Entman are feeling good, thanks to last Friday’s solid 1.0 rating premiere of World’s Funniest Fails, the Fox adaptation of its YouTube FailArmy channel. “User-generated-content had a stigma and brands were scared away, but now they’re opening up,” says Jukin President & COO Lee Esner….This NATPE, MGM is at 84% clearance for THIS TV, the movie network that takes full advantage of the meaty MGM film library, according to Vicky Gregorian, Senior Vice President Domestic Distribution. MGM’s other big fave, of course, is Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court. “As the show gets more popular, the quality of our litigants is getting better,” says Gregorian. As for Lauren Lake herself, “Her approach is all about life empowerment. I swear to God, she was a preacher in another life,” Gregorian adds.

Honorees added for the 32rd Annual Paleyfest include Showtime’s Homeland, HBO’s Girls, CW’s Jane The Virgin, FOX’s Glee, ABC’S Modern Family, Starz’s Outlander, MTV’s Teen Wolf and FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show. Already announced: ABC’s Scandal, CBS’s The Good Wife and CW’s Arrow and The Flash. Comedy Central’s Key & Peele, Broad City Kroll Show and Workaholics will be part of a special salute to the net. Event returns to the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland March 6-15.

Bob Newhart will add another feather to his cap when the publicists of the International Cinematographers Guild honor the beloved TV vet with their lifetime achievement award on February 20 at the Beverly Hilton. Previous winners include Clint Eastwood, Julie Andrews and last year’s honoree, Jerry Lewis.
