CYNOPSISDIGITAL
01.20.17

Good morning. It’s Friday January 20, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

MarTech: MarTech is short for marketing technology. As one might assume, the phrase refers to the blending of marketing and technology. Any technology that enables marketers to be more efficient or effective in reaching audiences falls under MarTech.

TOP NEWS

Snap Inc. is reportedly pulling the trigger on offline ad targeting. In a deal with Oracle Data Cloud, the Snapchat owner will now let advertisers use data third party offline data to target ads on the app. The partnership with Oracle Data Cloud (formerly called Datalogix) marks the first time that Snapchat has allowed for ad targeting that uses third-party data. Ultimately, Snapchat is just joining the fray: Facebook, Google and Twitter already had similar partnerships with Datalogix/Oracle Data Cloud. The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

MESSAGING

Facebook Messenger has come to desktop. As first spotted by TechCrunch, the social media giant appears to have replaced the Facebook.com inbox with an inbox that’s identical to the ones on the Facebook mobile app and the Facebook Messenger website. Chatting with friends on the Home screen still looks the same, but the Inbox icon has been replaced by the blue Messenger logo. It looks like Facebook is out to create a uniform experience across all devices. The company hasn’t publicly commented on the change.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

ABC’s Scandal just went a little bit digital. The series, which makes its season 6 premiere January 26, has dropped a new web show. Called Scandal: Gladiator Wanted, the series centers on the employees of protagonist Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) as they search for an intern for Olivia Pope & Associates. The series consists of six two-to-three minute episodes, all directed by Darby Stanchfield (AKA Scandal character Abby Whelan). You can find the eps on the ABC app and on ABC.com.

Discovery Communications has discovered Scandinavia. The company has inked distro deals with YouSee and GET, platforms owned by Danish telco TDC. The deal gives 1.3 million Danish households access to Discovery-owned channels including Eurosport, Kanal 4, Kanal5, and Kanal 6. The deal also covers the distribution of Discovery’s content on YouSee users’ mobile devices. In addition, Discovery’s pact with GET will distribute multiple Discovery-owned brands, including TV Norge, Max, and FEM, to Norwegian households.

VC FUNDING + INVESTORS

Looks like Derek Jeter is well into his second act. The Players’ Tribune, the athlete-centric digital media company that the former Yankees’ skipper founded in late 2014, just announced that it has pulled in $40 million in Series C funding. VC firm IVP led the round. Other investors included Alphabet’s GV (formerly called Google Ventures) and existing investors such as New Enterprise Associates and Thomas Tull. In addition, The Players’ Tribune says that individual athletes contributed a total of $8 million. Since the company’s founding, over 1,200 well-known athletes have contributed video programming, written stories, and other content. The company says it will use the money to expand its video production and content offerings, boost its sales efforts, and develop new revenue and distribution opportunities.

Jake Paul has raised $1 million in funding for TeamDom, his social media venture. Paul first achieved social media fame as a Vine star. TeamDom, where Paul serves as CEO, is geared toward promoting and incubating online talent and their projects. Chinese firm Danhua Capital led the funding round, with contributions from Vayner Capital’s Gary Vaynerchuk and others.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Dentsu has named a new CEO. The Japanese advertising giant has given the slot to Toshihiro Yamamoto, a 36-year vet of the company. Dentsu points out that Yamamoto is the only company President to have led all three of its domestic business domains – account services, media content, and business development. Yamamoto officially takes over on January 23. He’ll replace Tadashi Ishii, who had held the roll since 2011.

The WPP-owned out-of-home marketing agency Kinetic has made an important new hire. Michael Lieberman will serve as Chief Strategy Officer for Kinetic’s North American division. He’ll be tasked with overseeing the organization’s client service agenda and accelerating growth. Lieberman previously served as Chief Operating Officer of tenthavenue, the WPP-owned communications company that in turn owns Kinetic.

Mobile advertising platform AdColony has nabbed a high-ranking comScore exec. Jeff Hackett, previously comScore’s EVP of Sales, announced that he will join AdColony as SVP of U.S. Brand Sales. At the same time, AdColony (formerly called Opera Mediaworks) has elevated Mike Owen from EVP of Brand Sales to CRO of Global Brand. In his new role, Hackett will oversee AdColony’s brand- and agency-facing sales organizations. He had spent a total of 14 years at comScore, serving in a variety of roles; he gained the EVP title in 2010.

TRIVIA

Who are the two co-creators of the recently-released Amazon drama Sneaky Pete? (Email trivia@cynopsis.com with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)

Our Last Trivia Question: “I have regretted every second since I said OK. It’s been so hard for me.” That’s from a 2015 Deadline interview with Woody Allen. Which project was he saying he regretted taking on? Answer: A then-unnamed original series he’d agreed to create for Amazon. Later named Crisis in Six Scenes, it was released in September. Not surprisingly, recent interviews with Allen make it seem highly unlikely that he’ll make a second season. Kudos to Dan Quitério-Understood/NY, Mathew Tombers-Intermat, Inc./NY, Luke Watson-Roker Labs/NY, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-M and S Entertainment, Inc./CA, Tom Moore-Kalt Productions/CA, Aaron Paquette-Maru/Matchbox/TX, David Westberg-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA, and Lorrie Shilling/CA
