IN THE NEWS

NBC is reviving Will & Grace for a 10-episode limited run. Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally will reprise their Emmy-winning roles, and original series creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan will act as showrunners and executive producers. James Burrows, who directed every episode of the show during its initial 1998-2006 run, will direct and executive produce.“We started talking with Mutchnick and Kohan about producing new episodes right after they shot the secret reunion show back in September, and the fact that all four of the original stars were excited about getting back into production is a testament to the joyful experience they had doing nearly 200 episodes for eight seasons,” said Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment.“Few things cut through the clutter these days, especially in comedy, and Will and Grace is one of the best.”

Another show cutting through the clutter is NBC freshman drama This Is Us, which was renewed for two minimum 18-episode seasons. “We all got our wish that this is a hit show,” said Jennifer Salke. “This Is Us is as good as anything we’ve ever had, we’re thrilled to renew it for two seasons and there’s no doubt it will have a long life on NBC.” Original episodes are averaging 4.6 among A18-49 and 14.6 million viewers in Live+7 Nielsens.

“Let’s face it, the company needs a little bit of work,” said new Viacom CEO Bob Bakish at NATPE, noting, “We don’t have critical mass at some of the networks. We need to focus on that a bit more.” And that means making sure “flagship networks have the resources, programming, marketing and distribution, that they need.” On the bright side, “There’s a clear path forward,” said Bakish. “We already are starting to see some green shoots.”

When is the episode of Law & Order: SVU about a presidential hopeful with a sordid reputation finally going to air? Yanked from several slots after the 2005 Access Hollywood tape featuring Donald Trump surfaced (talk of groping, Tic Tacs), the show still doesn’t have an air date. “I have not been informed when it’s going to air,” said Dick Wolf during a TCA session. “I suspect it will be this spring, but I don’t know.”

Where the boys are: NBCUniversal is taking male-skewing cable net Esquire off the air and relaunching it as a digital service, which will continue to feature original programming. The news comes in the wake of a 25 percent plunge in subscribers after the channel was dropped from AT&T’s DirecTV and U-verse. Esquire, launched in 2013 in partnership with Hearst Corp., averaged 141,000 viewers in primetime last year, up 18 percent from 2015. “Since its launch, Esquire Network has seen consistent growth among total viewers and key demos and has delivered significant value to our advertising partners,” said Adam Stotsky, president of E! Entertainment and Esquire Network. “Men today consume content on a variety of platforms and it is essential that we follow our viewers….this new strategy sets us up for the future.”

NBC News reporter and Donald Trump target Katy Tur has been named anchor of MSNBC’s 2p hour through the first 100 days of the Trump administration, according to a memo from NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Ken Strickland. Fellow NBC News correspondent Hallie Jackson will anchor MSNBC at 10a, and was named a White House correspondent.

In a politically divided world, The Walking Dead creators “don’t have an agenda we’re pushing,” said exec producer Gail Anne Hurd at NATPE. “It’s a show about moral and ethical choices, and that’s something everyone can embrace.” Not every viewer embraced the level of violence on last year’s season premiere, which is why the AMC zombie drama “did tone it down for the episodes we were still filming,” said Hurd.

At the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Fusion announced the launch of “Fusion Fights,” a cross-platform content initiative that seeks to elevate conversations around social justice issues that impact young, diverse communities, like gender, economic and environmental justice, and civil rights. Fusion TV programming includes The Naked Truth: Women’s March on D.C., airing Sunday, January 22 at 8p, followed by The Gender Card at 8:30p and O Girls at 9:30p.

New York times alum Leslie Picker is joining CNBC as a reporter covering finance. The appointment becomes effective February 6.

Featured Session: The Future of Measurement Fireside Chat: Can’t we all just get along?
Cynopsis Ratings Master Class // January 25 // Sponsored by Nielsen // REGISTER NOW

George Ivie, CEO and Executive Director of the Media Rating Council, and Jane Clarke, CEO and Managing Director of the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement will have a candid conversation about how to move measurement forward to something we can all agree on. This is your chance to get a front row seat to the action and get your questions answered!

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Don’t count on a May premiere date for CBS All Access revival Star Trek: Discovery, which begins production next week. “This is an ambitious project; we will be flexible on a launch date if it’s best for the show,” warned CBS. “We’ve said from the beginning it’s more important to do this right than do it fast. There is also added flexibility presenting on CBS All Access, which isn’t beholden to seasonal premieres or launch windows.” Originally slated to launch this month, the series was pushed to May after showrunner Bryan Fuller stepped down in late October, handing control to executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

CBS ordered a pilot for comedy 9J, 9K, And 9L, from Dana Klein and Royal Pains star Mark Feuerstein, produced by Kapital Entertainment and inspired by Feuerstein’s life. Astronaut drama Mission Control, from Andy Weir (The Martian) also landed a pilot order. Both projects hail from CBS Television Studios.

NBC ordered 20 more episodes of The Wall, exec produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter. “A big event, family-friendly game show that can open a night is a wonderful asset,” said Paul Telegdy, president, alternative and reality group, NBC Entertainment. In its first two regular Tuesday telecasts, The Wall, the second show (after Better Late Than Never) to launch under Universal Television Alternative Studio, has averaged 1.7 among A18-49 and 6.9 million total viewers.

FremantleMedia North America has entered into a production partnership with Tent City Entertainment, headed by co-founders Lori Rothschild Ansaldi and Lisa Bourgoujian, recognized for their development and production of true crime content as well as historical and entertainment-driven programming. The Tent City team is based at FMNA’s Burbank headquarters. “True crime is something we at FMNA haven’t yet tapped into and it’s a genre that continues to be in-demand with viewers in the U.S. and abroad,” said Jennifer Mullin, co-CEO of FMNA. “We look forward to expanding on Lori and Lisa’s long, successful track record and will also look to their team’s expertise in related scripted ventures.”

Univision revealed at NATPE that it is developing a series based on the life of Latin American recording star Luis Miguel. Pedro Torres, a long-time collaborator with Miguel, will exec produce through his Curiosity Media Group. It’s one of two projects in the works centered on Miguel – Gato Grande Productions, an MGM joint venture, landed exclusive life rights to the singer for a bio-series that was announced in November.

More notes from NATPE: The Telemundo presentation at the Eden Roc was the place to be on Tuesday night. Appearances from a swath of the network’s stars, intro’d by Telemundo International CEO Marcos Santana framed the evening, along with a spotlit wave from NBCU International Group Chairman Cesar Conde…the brightest celeb of the evening, though, was La Fan’s Angelica Vale. Her character is indebted to a pizza costume, but that’s all we can tell you here….Justice Network CEO Steve Schiffman says the biggest media myth is that TV is dead. “What we will see is more of the highly fragmented way that people consume video, depending on age, life stage, income and more.” And one note of caution: “Local news needs to be reinvented. We will see plenty of consolidation and shared resources.”…Scott Shapiro, Sinclair Broadcast Group’s VP/Corporate Development, says 50-70% U.S. distribution will mean success for TBD, the multiscreen TV network from SBG and QYOU…CBS Television Distribution President Paul Franklin (formerly of 20th TV) says that this year’s NATPE is all about “protecting the house.” And a nice syndication house it is, thanks to Judge Judy, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy!

HSN home products will be featured in the film, and be shoppable via a co-branded web site. “This partnership with HSN shows that brand integrations can live organically outside of the traditional product-placement model that we have all become familiar with,” said Peter Olsen, EVP ad sales, A+E Networks. “By extending the collaboration outside of the film and allowing viewers to purchase the products they see in Beaches, we are establishing a new relationship with our viewers that keeps the film’s content top of mind throughout the viewing experience and beyond.” Beaches premieres Saturday, January 21 at 8p.

DEALS

Nielsen signed a multi-year agreement with AT&T that gives the measurement company access to set-top box data from AT&T’s DirecTV and U-Verse subscribers. “Combining Nielsen’s high-quality panels with anonymized set-top box data from AT&T’s DirecTV and U-Verse homes is at the center of our TV measurement strategy to enhance how TV viewing is measured” said Megan Clarken, president of Nielsen Product Leadership. “Nielsen is leveraging big data and its panel data to deliver comprehensive, reliable and in-depth measurement of how people consume content in today’s changing media landscape…. The inclusion of data from various providers supplements Nielsen’s panel data by providing increased granularity and more robust insights broadening our total audience view.” Want to know more? Gray Television struck a deal in principle with Dish Network that will keep Gray’s 100 or so stations across 54 markets on Dish. It was a different story with Bonten Media, which had 12 local channels removed from Dish’s offerings in a retrans stand-off. “While both Dish Network (and the stations) are working earnestly to resolve this matter, there is the potential that this could be a long interruption of service,” said a notice on the stations’ web site.
