Good morning. It’s Wednesday January 18, 2017 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
A&E, History, LMN: SIX at 10p

Tonight’s Finale:
A&E: Going Si-ral at 9:30p

IN THE NEWS

Sinclair Broadcast Group and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer announced a spring 2017 launch for action-based network Charge!. With more than 2,300 hours of TV series content and over 2,000 movie titles, the network will leverage the infrastructure of Sinclair and MGM’s first network partnership, science fiction multi-channel network Comet. Charge! is slated to reach over 50 percent of the country by the end of 2Q17 via distribution deals outside Sinclair’s footprint.

Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly landed the traditional Super Bowl pregame presidential interview this year. Part of the chat, pre-taped at the White House earlier in the day, will air around 4p during Fox’s pregame show, with more on the Fox News website and during FNC’s The O’Reilly Factor. O’Reilly interviewed President Obama on Super Bowl day in 2011 and 2014.

Done deal: Nexstar completed its $4.6 billion acquisition of Media General, first announced one year ago, after a Justice Department-mandated shedding of 13 TV stations. The new company, Nexstar Media Group, is the second-largest independent station owner. Said CEO Perry Sook, “The focus of our corporate, station-level and digital teams on local leadership, local vision and local targeting is the foundation of our positive near- and long-term financial outlook.”

What, me worry? AT&T will not need to spin off CNN to get approval for its $85 billion merger deal with Time Warner, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said on CNBC: “It doesn’t seem relevant to approving a deal like this. What would be the competitive issues that you’re remedying with spinning off CNN? There are not competitive issues.” As for his recent meeting with president-elect Donald Trump, it wasn’t merger-related, said Stephenson. Instead, “We talked about what the implications of what streamlining regulations would be.”

Speaking at NATPE on Tuesday, A+E Networks CEO Nancy Dubuc pointed to the importance of brand. “We’re coming into an era where that network brand is really going to be important,” said the exec. “Networks aren’t really networks anymore, they are really programming services. For example, History needs to be its own brand in the digital, education, editorial, television, international spaces with those businesses all attached to that brand.” As for A&E’s Escaping the KKK, canceled before launch following the disclosure that third-party producers had paid for access, “We’re going to take a close look and make sure we’re more surgical in following our unscripted guidelines but we’ll do that after our investigation is complete,” said Dubuc.

There’s a reason the room at the January 25 Cynopsis Ratings Master Class is filling up. “The application of Big Data to media analytics is changing the way we see audiences,” says Brent McGoldrick, CEO of Deep Root Analytics, and one of the event’s speakers. “Today, there is an opportunity to buy audiences based upon much more granular and unique insights than the traditional age, income and geography metrics. The use of DMPs for highly sophisticated audience segmentation is revolutionizing media buy efficiency and effectiveness by helping to identify high value targets that previously would not have been seen or known.” For more info and insights, register for next week’s training sessions, go here.

E!’s The Arrangement, about an actress who has a Cinderella-like date with a famous movie star, then is offered a $10 million marriage contract tying her to a secretive self-help organization, “really isn’t” based on Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes/Scientology, insisted EP Jonathan Abrahams at the TCA winter press tour on Tuesday. Instead, the 10-parter is based on the “whole self-help” world. Series debuts Sunday, March 5 at 10p. Another E! newcomer, So Cosmo, makes its debut Wednesday, February 8 at 8p.

A survey sponsored by the Nonfiction Producers Association ranked 23 cable networks in six areas that affect reality TV producers including preferences for pitching, executive creativity, development process, business affairs process, production editorial oversight, andproduction management. History was tops in four categories and placed second in the two others, while A&E was first in two categories and runner-up in the other 4. Producers also showed love for ID, which finished in the top 5 in all 6 categories, while Lifetime, Travel Channel, Animal Planet and HGTV all made the top 10 list in each area. “The NPA has been meeting with individual networks to further the producer-network dialog andsuggest ways to improve processes,” said John Ford, GM of the NPA. “This survey, which is part of that effort, is meant to be a snapshot, from a producer’s point of view, of their current business climate, and we intentionally kept it contained to the six basic areas they say most influence the production experience.”

Former The Apprentice contestant Summer Zervos, who in October accused Donald Trump of sexual assault during the NBC reality show’s fifth season 10 years ago, filed a defamation lawsuit against him on Tuesday. Trump had called Zervos’ allegations “totally made up nonsense.” During a news conference yesterday, Zervos said she would drop the suit if Trump retracted his statements calling her a liar.

Do you think those who don’t support Donald Trump are right to boycott his inauguration on TV? Let us know where you stand in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll.
