IN THE NEWS
USA is off the fence about Playing House, renewing the comedy for season three. News broke at TCA on Thursday, when series creators/stars Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair badgered USA president Chris McCumber during his opening remarks with queries about the fate of their show, until he assured them they’d be back. While season two was strong on VOD, linear ratings were soft.
With a casting contingency lifted, it’s a go for ABC’s three-hour Dirty Dancing remake. Debra Messing (The Mysteries of Laura) will play Marjorie opposite Abigail Breslin’s Baby. The event, produced by Lionsgate Television in association with Allison Shearmur Productions, will be filmed, not live.
American Idol runner-up and Grammy nominee Adam Lambert will be featured in Fox’s remake of 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Lambert will play motorcycle-riding party crasher Eddie, a role Meat Loaf sunk his teeth into in the original.
Retrans dispute-fueled blackouts jumped from 94 in 2014 to 193 last year, according to the Wall Street Journal. It’s not been smooth sailing in 2016, either. So far this year, Cordillera Broadcasting yanked Dish Network in 11 markets, and Baton Rough NBC affiliate WVLA-TV blacked out Cox Communications.
Apparently they won’t all be there for you. Despite the announcement at TCA that there will be a Friends reunion of sorts at NBC’s February 21 special honoring comedy director James Burrows, Matthew Perry will be in London rehearsing a play. So while Perry may be participating via video, don’t hold your breath for a group hug.
