CYNOPSISSPORTS
01.14.16

Good morning. It’s Thursday January 14, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN is giving an overhaul to its Sunday Night Baseball crew, announcing that the upcoming MLB season will see Dan Shulman joined by newly-named analysts Jessica Mendoza and Aaron Boon in the broadcast booth, along with returning reporter Buster Olney. They will make their debut on April 3 at 8:30 with Mets/Royals with Andy Reichwald as the new Sunday Night Baseball Producer. Meanwhile, Curt Schilling moves to Monday Night Baseball as analyst this season, joining analyst Eduardo Perez with Karl Ravech and Dave Flemming splitting play-by-play duties throughout the season. John Kruk shifts back to his role as a full-time Baseball Tonight studio analyst.

ON THE AIR

A day after news broke about the Rams getting the greenlight to move back to LA, with an option for the Chargers to join them, mayors of various cities took the spotlight in reaction to the NFL’s decision. San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, according to NBC San Diego, said that the decision opens the books to the city to revive its attempts to keep the team, noting "It is a new day. Think of how much this playing field has changed in the last 24 hours." Meanwhile St. Louis Mayor said that he will no longer pursue a team for the city, saying “There’s no appetite that I have to take another run at an NFL team," according to local reports. Finally former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros called for the city to beef up its efforts to lure the Raiders. “The stakes are so high for a city like San Antonio that is on the cusp of being an NFL market that it is worth making every effort,” he said.

ESPN International locked in a five-year extension of its agreement with Tennis Australia, providing the company with exclusive distribution rights in Latin America and the Caribbean of the Australian Open. The deal sees ESPN continue to have exclusive pay television and digital distribution rights and, beginning in 2017, ESPN will have the distribution rights to several lead-up events to the Australian Open, including the Hopman Cup, World Tennis Challenge, Brisbane International and Apia International. Also, ESPN will have the rights to select coverage of the Australian Open qualifiers, “Legends,” Juniors and Wheelchair events.

NBCSN lined up a mid-season look behind-the-scenes at a Premier League club, and will debut Premier League Behind the Badge: Crystal Palace FC, on Sunday at 2p. The four-part series showcases the Eagles’ work on and off the pitch with the series voiced by BBC presenter and former English footballer Gary Lineker.

BTN is pulling together coaching legends Jud Heathcote, Gary Williams and Tom Davis to “share the losses they never got over, the best players they coached and faced and their thoughts on NCAA basketball today” in season two of A Taste of Coaching. The series is hosted by Steve Lavin and debuts at 9p with five episodes on deck.

Sony announced that, in addition to The 2016 Sony Open in Hawaii being shot and broadcast in HD on Golf Channel using Sony cameras, the tournament will also see Sony’s HDC-4300 capture play on the 17th hole in 4K resolution. The system will be flanked by F55 S35mm cameras that will provide on course segments that will be used for the 4K HDR production as well as being converted to HD for the main broadcast. “Golf Channel is giving us prime real estate to get the best possible angles in 4K,” said Alec Shapiro, president, Professional Solutions Americas, Sony Electronics. “Sports in general are a perfect match for 4K, but golf is especially impressive. With 4K, viewers can really see every break of the greens and see the texture of the grass. ”

Speaking of Golf Channel, Wilson Golf announced the lineup of judges and host for Driver vs. Driver, set to debut on the network in Fall 2016. The four-person panel will include Brian Urlacher, Kevin Streelman, Frank Thomas and Tim Clarke, President of Wilson Golf. Melanie Collins will serve as the host. The series follows “the trials and tribulations that aspiring golf equipment designers face as their golf driver ideas and concepts are evaluated, critiqued, refined and tested.” The winning design team wins $500,000 and the opportunity to have their driver design sold at retail under the Wilson Staff name.

RIP to sportscaster Jim Simpson, a staple of both NBC and ESPN who passed away yesterday in Scottsdale at the age of 88 after a short illness. Over the course of his career, Simpson worked for all three broadcast networks, TNT and ESPN at its launch over his 50+ years in the business. “On Jim’s first visit to Bristol I met him at the airport and immediately experienced his warm personality.  He brought tremendous credibility to ESPN in our early days, doing whatever was needed to help build the network. Jim was a television legend,” said ESPN Founder and first President, Bill Rasmussen.
