IN THE NEWS

American Horror Story was renewed for two additional seasons, in addition to its previously announced seventh season. The news was announced at FX Networks’ presentation at the TCA winter 2017 on Thursday.“American Horror Story launched the modern limited series revolution and  as evidenced by the most recent installment ‘Roanoke’ – it remains as vital today as when ‘Murder House’ stunned audiences six years ago,” said John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions FX Networks. “Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot. We are thrilled that Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and the entire creative team will continue to deliver the groundbreaking, celebrated American Horror Story for years to come.”

As for American Horror Story’s seventh season, Murphy noted that the show would not be going back in time. “It’s a modern-day story,” he told reporters, adding that AHS vets Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters would both be back.

Meanwhile, American Crime Story’s Hurricane Katrina-themed second season on FOX has been pushed to 2018. Landgraf explained that the network has “really high ambitions” for the project. “It’s about character and larger themes. It’s just taking time, frankly, to get material we’re happy with…. Also, when you’re shooting in New Orleans, you have to worry about hurricanes.” As a result, the Katrina and Versace installments will air within about six months of each other.

On the subject of the Versace project, which explores the 1997 murder of Gianni Versace, show creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that, despite reports, Lady Gaga will not be playing Donatella Versace.

FX Productions signed Atlanta creator Donald Glover to an exclusive overall television production deal. Glover will develop television series for FX Networks and other networks and streaming services, in addition to continuing to executive produce, write, direct and star in Atlanta. FX also announced that Atlanta will not return for a second season until 2018 due to Glover’s production schedule.

Premiere dates were set for upcoming FX Networks projects. Ryan Murphy’s limited series, Feud: Bette and Joan bows Sunday, March 5 at 10p on FX, while Archer moves to FXX for its eighth season on Wednesdays, starting April 5 at 10p.

There may be hope for Disney Channel’s recently canceled Girl Meets World, reports TVLine. “There are talks underway, but we’re at the very very beginning stages,” revealed Creator Michael Jacobs.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson and other company executives arrived at Trump Tower on Thursday for a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump. According to Bloomberg, the meeting was being held to discuss AT&T’s proposed $85 billion bid to acquire Time Warner Inc. While on the campaign trail, Trump said he would block the deal.

Smithsonian Channel airs The Obama Years: The Power of Words on Monday, February 27 at 8p. Narrated by actor and producer Jesse Williams, the special tells the story of Barack Obama, “writer in chief,” taking viewers inside the defining moments of his political career through his most memorable speeches.

The archive for Mad Men was donated to the Harry Ransom Center, a humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin by Matthew Weiner, the series creator, EP, writer and director, and Lionsgate, which produced the series. Materials include script drafts and notes, props, costumes, digital records and video relating to the creation, production and marketing of the series.

Total audience measurement tools are here, including measurement of viewing across linear, VOD, DVR, mobile, connected TV devices & tablets. Plus, Marketers aren’t just looking for age/gender – they’re aiming for specific targets & want you to find and measure them.

During these sessions, you’ll learn:
-How this new data set work for you
-How digital content ratings differ from total content ratings
-Methods for using data science to reach a specific audience

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) has teamed with comic book publisher IDW Entertainment to develop The Devil, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Based on the novel The Devil: Britain’s Most Feared Underworld Taxman, by Graham Johnson, the drama is being eyed as a limited series, although no network has been attached.

Lionsgate partnered with executive producer Jeff Apploff to create original non-scripted series and formats for Lionsgate Television through his Apploff Entertainment banner. Under the agreement, Lionsgate will have exclusive rights to television content produced by Apploff Entertainment. In addition to the Apploff deal, the company is readying the network reality series Kicking & Screaming for FOX and Candy Crush in partnership with CBS and Activision’s King Digital Media.

ADVERTISING & AGENCIES

Cynopsis will be honoring today’s top advertising talent at the Buyers & Planners Awards celebration in NYC on February 7. But before that party starts, we want to introduce you to some of our all-star nominees. First up: Kyle McAteer, Senior Media Planner, Digital at Horizon Media.

Cynopsis: What’s the biggest challenge facing the ad community today?
Kyle McAteer: Cohesive measurement and attribution. From my experiences starting in this industry 4 years ago, the lines between TV and online video continue to merge, yet as a community we have not come together to produce a truly cohesive measurement tool inclusive of all advertising channel’s attribution.

Cynopsis: What in your background best helped prepare you for a job in media planning?
McAteer: I graduated from Boston University’s College of Communication and I am where I am today because of what I learned from the exceptional advertising professionals and professors in COM. Boston University’s Ad Lab is the country’s largest full-service, student-run ad agency and provided me with the opportunity to create real, cutting-edge, effective work for clients such as Cupcake Vineyards Wines and Harvard Medical prior to graduating.

Cynopsis: What do you find most rewarding about your job at Horizon?
McAteer: The people. Horizon has some of the smartest, hard-working and creative employees I have ever met and worked with. Aside from day-to-day responsibilities and job functions, Horizon is the first job where I’ve felt confident and comfortable enough to approach colleagues about side-projects, learning and development and even general life questions. I’m grateful to be a part of such a great organization and now understand what “business is personal” truly means.
For questions about the event, which will also include the inaugural TV Awards, please email Jenn@Cynopsis.com.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Theresa Caputo and her family are back for another season of Long Island Medium on Sunday, February 19 at 8p on TLC. The premiere features Rosie O’Donnell, Billy Gardell (Mike & Molly), Ta’Rhonda Jones (Empire) and actress and comic Mo’Nique.

When can you try Drew Barrymore’s Santa Clarita Diet? To find out what’s here and coming up online, check out Watcheroo, Cynopsis’ digital guide:  http://www.cynopsis.com/watcheroo/.

COMING UP

Super Bowl Greatest Commercials 2017, hosted by Boomer Esiason and Daniela Ruah (NCIS: Los Angeles), bows Tuesday, January 31 at 8p on CBS. The interactive countdown special allows viewers to vote for their favorite “Bigger is Better” or “Less is More” Super Bowl commercial.

TV One celebrates the 45th anniversary of Sanford and Son with a three-day marathon beginning Friday, January 13 at 8p. The net will air back-to-back episodes of the classic sitcom in sequential order all weekend.

Justice Network premieres series Most Evil on Sunday, January 15 at 3p, followed by films Stepford Wives at 4p, Dead Again at 9p and Killer Speaks at 10p.

If you want a career in research, you might want to aim for cable, not broadcast. According to the Cynopsis Salary Survey, cable network researchers’ annual take home pay is $8000 more than their broadcast peers, and almost $30,000 more than what ad agency researchers make. Which might have something to do with the fact that this group is more content than other industry sectors, with only 5 percent saying they’re very dissatisfied with their salary. Buyers & Planners, on the other hand, expressed the most dissatisfaction (14 percent), along with Programmers and those in Marketing/Public Relations (13 percent each).
