CYNOPSISDIGITAL
01.13.16

Good morning. It’s Wednesday January 13, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TOP NEWS

Up Periscope! The video live-streaming app is being integrated into the platform of its parent company, Twitter. Starting yesterday, users of the Twitter iOS app could start viewing live auto-playing video streams directly within their timelines. Users also now have access to replays of past broadcasts directly through the Twitter app. Though the Periscope integration is only available for iOS to start, Android and web integration are planned for the near future. Periscope videos will also likely be coming to Twitter’s curated Moments section.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

It seems that Cuban Americans have been playing a pretty strong role in American public life lately – so Netflix picked a good time to reimagine a classic sitcom with a Cuban American family. The long-anticipated remake of the decades-old series One Day at a Time has received a 13-episode order from the streaming service. It will co-star Oscar-winner Rita Moreno, according to Deadline. And the series is being powered by some network sitcom veterans: Gloria Calderon Kellett (How I Met Your Mother) and Mike Royce (Everybody Loves Raymond) will serve as writers. Sony Pictures TV will serve as the series’ studio.

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

It stands to reason that a business network would anticipate the value of a streaming audience. Fox Business Network announced that it will live-stream its telecast of tomorrow’s Republican Presidential primary debate on FOXBuisness.com, across all desktop and mobile devices. No authentication will be required. The news follows on the heels of last year’s announcement that YouTube, in partnership with NBC News, will live-stream the January 17 Democratic debate.

President Obama is embracing Snapchat something fierce. On Monday, the White House announced the launch of an “Official Story” on the app. And yesterday – the day of his final State of the Union address – the  44th President hopped aboard the Discover platform of the news and pop culture-oriented media company Fusion. Fusion’s Discover feed featured editorial and video content, both from Fusion writers and Obama himself, centering around the President’s message on climate change. (Short version: He’s against it.)

It’s not the first time Fusion has partnered with prominent politicians on Snapchat. Late last year, Bernie Sanders took to the platform to discuss income inequality. And this Thursday, Hillary Clinton will partner with Fusion to discuss women’s issues.

So when it comes to covering politics and the issues of the day, why does Snapchat seem to be an ever-more-popular choice for media companies? In a phone conversation with Cynopsis Digital, Daniel Eilemberg, Fusion’s Chief Digital Officer and SVP, had some thoughts.

“We’re still going after a young, diverse audience, and so we program our Snapchat channel very much with that in mind,” said Eilemberg. “We want to be the Snapchat channel for young, Hispanic, African American, Asian and Muslim kids in this country. This is a way to elevate issues that we think are important for people to understand, especially during an election year. It allows us to do this on a native platform that already reaches that young demographic, and do it in a voice and a format and a style that’s going to be more appealing and palatable for that audience than an hour-and-a-half television address at an appointment time.”

OTT + SVOD

Amazon set aside some time for chest-thumping at the Television Critics Association‘s winter press tour, and it wasn’t just about their two Golden Globe wins. “Over the last two months, Amazon Prime members spent eight times more time watching Amazon original series than they did over the same time period last year,” said Amazon Studios head Roy Price. (As Adweek points out, Amazon doesn’t provide concrete viewing data. So while “eight times” sounds phenomenal, it’s impossible to know just how many viewers it amounts to.) The Man in the High Castle, meanwhile, became the most-viewed original Amazon Prime series. And streaming of children’s series, Price said, “more than doubled in the last quarter.”

When they use the phrase “life hack,” this is what they’re talking about. The blog What’s On Netflix compiled a list of numerical codes that correspond to Netflix’s genres (even the most obscure ones). Here’s where it gets awesome: Those numbers can be copied and pasted into a standardized URL, taking you straight to the genre page in question. If you have a Netflix subscription (and if you’re reading this newsletter, you do), then you simply need to check this out. Learn more here.

PLATFORMS + TECH

The VLC video player has officially launched on the Apple TV. The app supports playback of locally stored video files, as well as files that are stored on a network-attached storage drive or a computer. Users can also use VLC to play online videos. On top of that, there are plans to introduce support for cloud storage services. You can learn more from the official announcement – here.

Bravo Media has launched The Feast, the first in a series of micro-verticals set to debut on BravoTV.com. The platform, which features both video and editorial content, covers food-centric topics ranging from dishes to dining destinations. Next month, Bravo plans to follow up on The Feast with Jet Set, an adventure and travel site.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Hulu is setting the stage for some major efforts in VR. Ben Smith, Hulu’s SVP of Experience, told Variety that the company has set to work creating VR “viewing environments” for its virtual reality app. “You are gonna start seeing some stuff from us this spring on VR,” he said. You can learn more here.

VC FUNDING + INVESTORS

MovieLaLa, a social movie marketing app featuring customizable profiles and personalized suggestions, announced that it has raised $1.4 million in funding in a new seed round. Investors include Jonathan Miller, the former CEO of Digital Media at News Corp, former Walt Disney CFO Jay Rasulo, and numerous others.

RESEARCH

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

For the week ending 1-10, Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer topped both the Streaming Only TVI list and the All Series TV list, which is quite unusual for a streaming series. (And it wasn’t particularly close in either instance.) More unusual still is that the social conversation surrounding the series only seem to be picking up steam as time goes on.

“Compared to interest trends around other TV programs – especially Netflix originals – Making a Murderer is definitely an anomaly,” ListenFirst Media Client Strategist Meghan Hakim wrote an email to Cynopsis Digital. “While there has been a growing amount of social conversation around the show, the biggest indicator of increased interest over time is the Search Volume Score – a component of the ListenFirst TVI – which normally peaks around a show’s premiere and then tapers off in the days following. Three weeks after its release in December, Making a Murderer saw its highest Search Volume Score, making it the most searched for TV program with nearly 2X the page views of all other shows.”

You can find the Streaming Series list (1/4/16 – 1/10/16) below:

Source:ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

Bravo Media and sister company Oxygen Media had a very solid year online. A handful of stats announced by the companies:

– BravoTV.com had its best-ever year for unique visitors in 2015, with 61% year-over-year growth. The month of December hit an all-time high of 12.1 million unique visitors.

– BravoTV.com had its best year ever in visits across platforms, including desktop, tablet and mobile up +68% year-over-year.

– Oxygen.com, meanwhile, announced 46% year-over-year growth in average monthly unique visitors. The company says that, in the fourth quarter of 2015, the site had its best quarter ever in terms of average monthly unique visitors.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Even the young can benefit from experience. Digital news network The Young Turks has hired Chris Puckett as its first ad sales exec. Puckett now serves as VP of Advertising and Brand Partnerships. Most recently, he served as East Coast Director of Sales at Fullscreen. He also served as BuzzFeed’s Head of Sales from 2010 to 2011. The hire was first reported by Variety.

The multi-platform production company Fullscreen has hired Pete Stein to serve as General Manager of its brand group. The position is newly created. Stein will work to develop concepts, strategies and market insights for brand and agency clients. He’ll also oversee the integration of McBeard, the social media studio that Fullscreen acquired last year. Stein is a veteran of the digital agency Razorfish, having served as President from 2008-2013 and CEO from 2013-2014.

Maxime Saada has been named as the next Chairman of the popular online video platform Dailymotion. Saada currently serves as CEO of Canal Plus Group. (And he’s clearly a multi-tasker, because he’s retaining that position.)  Saada will replace current Dailymotion Chairman Cedric Tournay. Dailymotion has been owned by Vivendi since June 2015.

Need more evidence that virtual reality is going to be big? Allow Facebook and Google to provide it for you. Clay Bavor, Google’s VP of Product Management, was previously overseeing Google’s apps, as well as Google Cardboard. Now? He’s solely working in VR. Meanwhile, Facebook has reassigned Peter Deng, Instagram’s Director of Product; Deng will serve as Head of Product Management at Oculus. The underlying theme here: VR is more important than a lot of other things.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT

As may be readily apparent, the writer of this newsletter is an enormous David Bowie fan. And while yesterday’s digital spotlight featured one of his performances, one Bowie-centric spotlight simply isn’t enough – not for a musician who commanded a spotlight like no other. So check out Jimmy Fallon’s brief but touching (and, somehow, very funny) tribute to the late rock god. Watch it here.

See you tomorrow,
David Teich
