Early figures suggest consumer home entertainment spending saw another annual increase in sales. Among the highlights: Total US home entertainment spending topped $18 billion. VOD was up 6 percent to $2.1 billion in 2016, after falling nearly 3 percent in 2015. SVOD was up about 22 per cent year-over-year.

ADVERTISING

A new report from Videology, "2017 TV & Video Outlook," offers interviews with experts from media companies, ad agencies and tech providers. Joe Kyriakoza, VP and GM, automotive and Oracle, offers, "Where addressable advertising is available, automotive clients are aggressively testing it. The more progressive ones are going even further, to where it’s a regular part of their planning engagement. Because it’s smarter, tighter and it’s driven by data. These brands don’t have reservations, they have a test and learn attitude." For more of the report, go here.

A Beta Research survey of ad execs indicated 54 percent planned to increase ad spend on ESPN, the top among basic cable nets, followed by 47 percent for HGTV, 41 percent for Food Network, and 40 percent each for Discovery and TNT. "The percent and rank for HGTV were significantly higher than in 2015," Andrew Klein, president, cable TV division for Beta Research, notes to Cynopsis. For broadcast, the numbers were 46 percent surveyed planning an increase in ad spend for NBC, 45 percent for ABC, 43 percent for CBS and 34 percent for Fox.

Agency personnel – buyers, planners, analysts and directors – are bogged down by outdated tools and tech, says Scott Neslund, EVP of client services at Centro, taking time and focus from strategic and creative aspects of accounts. "Our data found that employees in the digital media space are relying heavily on too many disparate, unconnected systems to get from one step in the campaign process to the next. If you were to ask about the day-to-day lives of digital media operations professionals, they’ll probably tell you that they’re slowed down by complicated, time-consuming, and chaotic workflow."
