CYNOPSIS
01.11.16
Good morning. It’s Monday January 11, 2016, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tonight’s Premieres:
Cartoon: LEGO NEXO Knights at 5:30p
Food Network: Cake Wars at 9p
Fusion: Real Future at 10p
Myx TV: mydiveo LIVE! at 10p
IN THE NEWS
CBS announced a spring schedule that includes special airings of CSI: Cyber on Wednesday at 10p on March 2 and March 9, ahead of the new premiere date for Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders in the time slot, March 16. Elementary moves from Thursdays to Sundays at 10p on March 20, and the series premiere of Rush Hour is set for Thursday, March 31 at 10p.
Michael Strahan will host ABC celeb-filled summer game show $100,000 Pyramid. It’s familiar territory for the Pro Football Hall of Famer and co-host of daytime’s Live! With Kelly and Michael, who said, “Growing up, Pyramid was one of my favorite shows to watch with my family.” SMAC Entertainment produces in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Doctor Who is getting a spin-off series. BBC America eight-parter Class, set in a school in contemporary London, will be exec produced by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin, and written by author Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls). The net also announced thriller Prey, debuting Thursday, February 25 at 10p, and self-explanatory Valentine’s Day special Adele: Live in London.
Tomorrow’s a big day for ABC Family, transitioning to Freeform with a daylong virtual event. Launch partnerships include a Social DNA Project with Twitter; alive stream of events via Periscope; a Vine booth; a BuzzFeed Facebook Live chat and a custom Pretty Little Liars Facebook icon; Instagram content and talent takeovers, and a PLL Snapchat filter. As for the new name, Freeform “speaks to the network’s ongoing priority to super-serve Becomers, fans on that epic adventure of becoming and adult.” And that means being super social.
It’s good to be YouTube right now. “TV viewing actually peaked in 2009,” noted chief business officer Robert Kyncl at CES. “Prior to that, TV had grown every single year for 50 years. Already the youngest millennials are watching more digital video than TV. In fact, it has now overtaken social media as their top online activity.” After his keynote, Kyncl sat down with Cynopsis. If digital’s the destination, what’s the trend in longform content? “In general what you see is the content lengthening but at the same time, you see continued increase in engagement of shortform content,” said Kyncl. “We don’t really have a policy where we favor one of the other, we are just watching the trends. When we produce content ourselves for YouTube Red it makes sense we make it a little bit longer so we can differentiate it from what’s in front of the pay wall. We are looking to release something every month, in different genres but mostly focusing on younger audiences.”
Beyonce will be featured in the Super Bowl halftime show, joining headliner Coldplay. The superstar singer, who has a vocal on the British band’s new album, starred in the halftime show three years ago. Big game is Sunday, February 7.
Who’s counting? A+E Networks Digital Media reported its best year ever for all metrics, according to Adobe Analytics, with 10 percent year-over-year growth in total video views (734 million), a 19 percent boost in uniques (24.8 million), 16 percent rise in total visits (493 million) and 15 percent lift in total minutes (7.3 billion).
PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
ABC picked up to pilot Sony Pictures Television drama The Jury, written by VJ Boyd (Justified) and Mark Bianculli (Self Promotion), and exec produced by Carol Mendelsohn (CSI). The net also ordered a pilot for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off Marvel’s Most Wanted.
The Son, based on Philippe Meyer’s novel about the bloody rise of a Texas family, landed a straight-to-series order from AMC. Historical drama will be produced by AMC Studios and Sonar Entertainment and written and exec produced by Meyer, Lee Shipman, Brian McGreevey and showrunner Kevin Murphy (Defiance).
Filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks) will direct an episode of CW’s DC Comics series The Flash in May. Smith is a comic book writer who owns a comic book store in New Jersey.
UK producer October Films landed a commission for National Geographic Channel’s Mygrations, about a “human herd” of 20 hardy souls attempting to complete Africa’s grueling, six-week Wlldebeest migration. Docu-series launches on Nat Geo in the U.S. this spring, as well as globally.
While TNT picked up drama pilots Good Behavior and Animal Kingdom to series, Home did not make the cut. But that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of the effort from Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Warner Horizon. “It was actually a really good pilot,” said TNT and TBS president Kevin Reilly. “I think someone else will end up picking it up.”
Starz is targeting Latino viewers with new projects in development. There’s a partnership with Televisa USA to develop original series Maleficio, based on hit 1983-84 Mexican telenovela El Maleficio, while Pour Vida tells the tale of two sisters who open a wine and tapas bar in East LA “ a story that has yet to be told on television,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director, Starz. “There is heart and humor in capturing the first-generation experience.” And supernatural series Santeria, from Cuban writer/director Alejandro Brugues (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), focuses on opposing sects in Cuba.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS
There will be less commercial clutter on TNT and TBS this year: ad loads in new dramas launching in 2016 will be reduced by 50%. Saying the initiative, following a similar announcement by Turner sib truTV, has “been getting a great response from clients,” Kevin Reilly admitted that by increasing ad inventory over the years, “We have overstuffed the bird.”
Fresh Off the Boat and restaurant chain Panda Express are partnering for a Chinese New Year stunt. January 13 through February 3, Panda outlets will display branded Fresh Off the Boat Chinese New Year posters and table tents featuring the ABC comedy’s Huang family. Boat sails back with a new episode Tuesday, February 2 at 8p.
TCA TALK
On hand at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour to talk about Discovery true crime series The Killing Fields, co-exec producer Barry Levinson said it doesn’t matter whether the show’s cold case in question is solved. “Where it differs from other of the other type of documentary shows that are doing that, I think we have an investment in the characters…we have investment in character in search of an answer.”
Count ABC president Paul Lee in favor of Castle returning for a ninth season. “We’d love for Castle to keep going for years to come,” said Lee. “There are a lot of good ideas for that.” The big question mark: actors Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, whose contracts are up. While the writers, as they did last year, await word on whether their show will keep its stars, “Everything that has been set up will come to a conclusion this season,” said co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter.
ABC’s Bachelor franchise has been criticized for a lack of diversity, but that’s a problem Paul Lee suggested will soon be corrected. “We’re doing a whole lot of tweaks,” Lee told reporters. “I’d be very surprised if The Bachelorette in the summer isn’t diverse.”
Anderson Cooper appeared via satellite (he was later hosting a town hall meeting with President Obama on CNN) on behalf of Nothing Left Unsaid, the documentary he exec produced about his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt. “She’s the most youthful person I know, even at almost 92,” said Anderson of his mom, who was sitting onstage. Cooper recalled finding “amazing” letters to Vanderbilt from Howard Hughes in a storage unit… along with a forgotten box of corn flakes.
“We’re in the midst of doing it,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht about readying an OTT app. “Nothing really to talk about right now…but it seems as if the new and the old are willing to exist side by side for a while.”
Kevin Reilly revealed that “a total reinvention” of TNT and TBS is in the works, with TNT “bolder, less by the book, more muscular,” and TBS programmed with “unapologetic, daring comedy that builds a bridge with Adult Swim.”
Saddle up for more Deadwood. HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said series creator David Milch is working on a script for a movie based on the 2004-2006 series starring Ian McShane and Timothy Oliphant, among others.
GLOBAL GOINGS-ON
DCD Rights struck deals for BBC Productions’ four-part documentary Mumbai Railway in Scandinavia, Baltics, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, CIS and Sub-Saharan Africa (Viasat Explore MTG World), Australia (SBS), New Zealand (Living TV), Netherlands (RTL) and Czech Republic (Prima TV).
CASTING
Laura Dern has joined the cast of the Twin Peaks revival on Showtime, reports TVLine. Dern joins her Blue Velvet (1986) co-star, Kyle MacLachlan.
Anthony Starr (Banshee) landed a role on upcoming CBS drama American Gothic, opposite Justin Chatwin and Megan Ketch.
Colombian actor Juan Pablo Raba has joined upcoming History drama Six, following a Navy SEAL team.
Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) will star in Hulu’s Shuteye. Series focuses on the world of storefront psychics.
DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE
Hulu and Sony announced a deal that will add full seasons of series and films from Sony Pictures to the streaming service. Offerings include all episodes of The Shield, Party Of Five, Dawson’s Creek, Damages as well as films from Sony archives.
