IN THE NEWS

While the first episode of CBS’s Superior Donuts, starring Judd Hirsch as a 1960s radical, touches on racial profiling and gun control, the comedy “isn’t going to be an issue of the week show,” said exec producer Garrett Donovan at the TCA winter press tour. “We will talk about issues as it comes up organically.” That said, showrunner Bob Daily admitted, “If we were to incite a tweet war with the President of the United States, we probably wouldn’t turn that down.” CBS starts serving Donuts Thursday, February 2 at 8:30p.

CBS’s version of Training Day, inspired by the 2001 film, won’t feature the characters played on the big screen by Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, said the action drama’s exec producer, Will Beall, at TCA. “The movie is its own thing,” said Beall. “It’s this classic crime story. So we gave (the movie characters) respectful distance.” Training Day, starring Bill Paxton as a morally ambiguous detective, makes its debut Thursday, February 2 at 10p.

The Good Wife’s Alicia (Julianna Margulies) will be heard about but not seen on CBS All Access spin-off The Good Fight, said series co-creator Robert King at TCA. “We talked to Julianna about the show and her relationship with it,” said King, “and Julianna agreed The Good Wife ended that story.” A trailer shown for the drama featured Diane (Christine Baranski) swearing after learning she’d lost her life savings in a Ponzi scheme. Without TV network censors, “You’re going to hear people talk the way they speak in life,” said co-creator Michelle King. The Good Fight premieres Sunday, February 19 at 8p on CBS and CBS All Access, with the second episode debuting just on the streaming service that night.

“It’s really happening,” announced Showtime president David Nevins at TCA. The long-gestating reboot of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks will premiere May 21 at 9p with a two-hour premiere; episodes 3 and 4 will be available on Showtime’s digital platform immediately after. So what’s the show like? “It will be 18 unforgettable hours,” promised Nevins.

Also getting launch dates on Showtime were six-part limited series Guerilla (Sunday, April 19 at 9p), as well as drama I’m Dying Up Here, produced by Jim Carrey (June 4 at 10p). Showtime ordered White Famous, starring Saturday Night Live alum Jay Pharoah, and drama The Chi, and renewed The Affair for season 4, ahead of its season 3 finale on January 29.

Is Showtime cooking up a signature political linchpin a la HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and TBS’ Full Frontal With Samantha Bee? “We’re figuring some things out right now,” said Nevins. “What we started with The Circus has big-time potential beyond just the election.”

Hearst Television reached a retrans deal with AT&T, and its stations are back on DirecTV after a week-long blackout. “We remain committed to the future of localism – ensuring the viability of local investigative journalism, breaking news and weather coverage, and quality local and national programming,” said Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb. “We regret the inconvenience to DirecTV subscribers and are indebted to them and all of our advertisers for their support.” Hearst had accused DirecTV of attempting to carry their stations “at below market rates, which is neither fair nor reasonable.”

Did you get a bonus this year  and if so, how did it compare to your peers’? GOLDEN GLOBES AFTERMATH

Jenna Bush Hager offered a heartfelt apology on NBC’s Today yesterday, for a flub during the Golden Globes pre-show. “When I was interviewing the incomparable Pharrell [Willaims], who I adore, I accidentally in the electricity of the red carpet, which I had never done, called Hidden Figures, Hidden Fences,” said Bush Hager. “If I offended people, I am deeply sorry.” Presenter Michael Keaton had made the same mistake onstage, announcing the Supporting Actress category. “All movies with black people don’t sound alike,” tweeted comedian Robin Thede.

President-elect Donald Trump also had morning-after comments. About Meryl Streep’s speech-gone-viral speech calling him out (though not by name) for mocking a disabled reporter, Trump tweeted, “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked me last night at the Golden Globes.
