IN THE NEWS

Among the highlights of the 74th Golden Globes Awards ceremony on NBC last night were a cold-open with host Jimmy Fallon in an A-list, dancing-on-cars-while-waiting-to-hit-the-red-carpet bit (thanks, La La Land), that included Fallon twirling with Justin Timberlake. Fallon found himself winging it in the first few live seconds, Teleprompter-less. “This is a great way to start the show,” said Fallon. “Already you have our Golden Globes moment!” Donald Trump jokes and a musical tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds followed, but the highlight of the evening was a powerful, poignant tribute to Meryl Streep from Viola Davis, who’d picked up a Best Supporting Actress award for Fences, and Streep’s acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award with Trump call out, saying, “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence,” advising, “As the departed Princes Leia once said, ‘Take your broken heart and turn it into art.’”

And the TV winners were:
Best Television Series – Drama: The Crown (Netflix)
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy: Atlanta (FX)
Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story (FX)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie: Sarah Paulson (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie: Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager)
Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Drama: Claire Foy (The Crown)
Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Drama: Billy Bob Thornton (Goliath)
Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy: Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish)
Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy: Donald Glover, Atlanta

Nielsen is making a change to the preview process for its Total Content Ratings system, aimed at consolidating TV and video viewing numbers. Instead of media clients analyzing TCR data online, which had been slated to start January 1, the measurement company will offer off-line reports. “At the behest of our television network clients, we have modified the way in which we will be sharing data during the agency evaluation period which begins in January,” said Nielsen. “We will be making certain reports available to agencies based on our clients and where they are in terms of implementation.” Online data is targeted for later in the month.

The CW announced at TCA early renewals for Arrow (season 6), fourth seasons for The Flash and Jane the Virgin, and third seasons of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Supergirl. Freshmen No Tomorrow and Frequency didn’t make the cut, though final decisions on their fates have yet to be made. The Vampire Diaries, ending its run with season 8, will have “a fantastic series finale,” promised net president Mark Pedowitz.

CBS upped its orders for three freshman comedies. The net tacked on two more installments to Kevin Can Wait, for a total of 24, and three each for Man With a Plan and The Great Indoors, for totals of 22 apiece. Kevin is averaging 10.16 million viewers and an A18-49 rating of 2.5, Indoors is logging 8.76 million viewers and 1.9 among A18-49, and Man is grabbing 7.35 million viewers and 1.6 in the demo.

Fox is giving new comedy The Mick another prime slot. After premiering post-NFL with a 2.8 rating among A18-49, tying NBC’s This Is Us as the highest-rated new series premiere for the season in Live+SD Nielsens, The Mick will air on Sunday, January 15 at 9p, following The Simpsons’ first hour-long episode. Taraji P. Henson (Empire), Snoop Dogg, Common and RZA will guest voice in the Simpsons special ep.

While it’s possible TBS late-nighter Conan could at some point go from airing weeknights to once a week, with episodes airing on digital platforms the rest of the week, said Turner president David Levy at CES, Conan O’Brien isn’t going anywhere. “Conan has a longstanding relationship with Turner Broadcasting,” noted Levy. “He’s a crucial part of what we do at TBS.” Last week, reports surfaced that Turner is considering a change in formant for Conan, but Levy said no decision has been made.

Hearst is acquiring a majority interest in Litton Entertainment, producer of educational-and-informational and family entertainment shows. The transaction is expected to close by February 1. “Providing quality, family-friendly programming to viewers is an important tenet of Hearst Television and adding Litton’s assets and expertise to our company through this partnership will be a terrific complement to our business,” said Hearst Television president Jordan Wertlieb.

Donald Trump hit Twitter on Sunday to blast NBC’s Meet the Press for editing an interview with his senior advisor, Kellyanne Conway. “Dishonest media cut out 9 of her 10 minutes. Terrible!” tweeted Trump. The net had earlier tweeted a link to the full interview, in which Conway said, “There is no evidence that Russia succeeded in any alleged attempt to disrupt our democracy or in fact influence the elections.” CNN’s Brian Stelter weighed in on social media, saying, “NBC source says Team Trump knew (on Friday) that the show was only planning to run a sound bite…not the full interview.”

Two days earlier, The New Celebrity Apprentice host Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to the president-elect’s tweet about the NBC’s reality show’s soft premiere. “Wow the ratings are in and Arnold Schwarzenegger got ‘swamped’ (or destroyed) by comparison to the ratings machine, DJT,” tweeted Trump. Responded the Terminator, “I wish you the best of luck and I hope you’ll work for ALL of the American people as aggressively as you worked for your ratings.”
