Good morning. It’s Tuesday January 10, 2017, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Jobs!
What’s ahead for the workforce in 2017? David Lewis, President/CEO of HR outsourcing and consulting firm OperationsInc, weighs in with his forecast, as well as practical advice on getting the job you want.
Cynopsis: Will 2017 be a hot job market?
David Lewis: I’m cautiously optimistic. Business climate, unemployment levels and the proposed new tax policies of the Trump Administration all support a very robust job market for 2017. The X factor – Trump. He could destabilize the economy by creating some level of diplomatic/international discourse, which would then ripple negatively through the economy.
Cynopsis: In the media arena, what are the skills most in demand?
Lewis: It’s all about Social Media these days. That translates into both the medium and services (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc.), as well as the skills around how to write / produce for these mediums. There is a style associated with writing these, be it within 140 characters or just in a way (mix of text, photo, video) that is critical to being successful in this space.
Cynopsis: What is the most effective way to get the attention of hiring managers?
Lewis: Find them via Social Media (LinkedIn) and approach them directly, ideally via mutual connections. Follow them on Twitter if they have a presence, as a means to get to know them vs. just stalk. Use these approaches to then reach out directly, express an interest in learning more about a role with their teams, and then wait…BUT do NOT send them a resume in your first note. Make them ask for it.
