IN THE NEWS

TNT‘s Rizzoli & Isles is ending after season seven, confirmed TNT and TBS president Kevin Reilly on Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena. Many predicted the move after the show’s upcoming summer run was shortened to 13 episodes, the smallest since its 10-episode premiere season.

Reilly also confirmed that TNT won’t be bringing DC Comics’ Titans to the small screen. “It is not [still in development],” he said. “We just decided it wasn’t quite where we wanted to go.”

Time Warner has extended Chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes‘ term through 2020. “The Board of Directors is delighted that Jeff has agreed to extend his employment agreement for another three years,” said Steve Bollenbach, the company’s Lead Independent Director. “Since becoming CEO, Jeff has transformed the company to focus on video content, capitalized on the combined strength of Turner, HBO and Warner Bros., and delivered consistently strong operating and financial performance.”

Hillary Clinton is headed back to late night. The Democratic presidential candidate will visit The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, January 14. This marks the former First Lady’s first appearance on the NBC show since September 16, 2015.

MeTV is marking its fifth anniversary as a national network with a new branding campaign and theme song. Stephen Arnold Music created the song for MeTV’s “That’s Memorable, That’s Me” promos. “All these great programs tie into the theme of, ‘That’s memorable, that’s Me,’” said Chad Cook, VP/ Creative Director for Stephen Arnold Music. “They’re all part of the MeTV brand, and they make up the DNA of this campaign.”

TBS has set Monday, January 25 for the premiere of CONAN in Qatar, featuring Conan O’Brien and First Lady Michelle Obama on their recent trip to visit U.S. troops stationed at the Al Udeid Air Base in Doha, Qatar. This will be O’Brien’s second trip abroad to perform for the men and women of the United States military; he visited Kuwait and Bahrain on a USO tour in 2003.

NBC has picked four comedy pilots. Marlon, based loosely on Marlon Wayans’ life, stars the actor/comedian as an inappropriate but loving father. Powerless, from Ben Queen, is a workplace comedy set in the DC Comics universe. There’s also a series from 30 Rock/Mindy Project writer Tracey Wigfield, about a clingy mother who interns at her daughter’s workplace, and one based on the life of 30 Rock/Parks and Recreation writer/producer Matt Hubbard, featuring a guy who moves his family to his wife’s hometown.

Henson, Terrence Howard, Ken Jeong, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton, Lady Gaga, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Statham and Mark Wahlberg. Ceremony airs Sunday, January 10 at 5p.

SEEN & HEARD AT CES

Brands are looking for ways to more authentically connect with consumers, but as yet there’s no clear technology that will get them there, Jason Jercinovic, president, Havas Worldwide, said on CES panel, Hollywood and the Digital Consumer. “Advertisers are trying to find out how to connect with consumers,” he said. “We’ve seen a lot of experimentation with new technologies and are looking at how to dip our toes into alternate reality with brands, but we’ve not seen any breakaway success that’s awesome yet.” Added Brandon Berger, chief digital officer, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, “Public companies are seeing a lot more pressure to come up with content solutions to engage with customers in digital ways. For a lot of our clients, their customers are spending more time in digital so they’re spending more of their resources there.”

Make love, not war: Despite the buzz around cord-cutting, execs at CES said traditional and OTT realms are working together quite well. “The hybrid TV/OTT model is rapidly growing,” said Ian Greenblatt, VP, strategy and business development, Arris. “It’s not a zero sum game.” In fact, 2016 will be “the year of shakeout of what the OTT experience looks like,” said Mark Ramberg, VP, business development at Akamai. “Right now it’s being driven by consumer expectations. They’re hearing about OTT, they’re excited about the experience. But it’s not that great yet.” While NBC has already begun wading into OTT waters, Tennis Channel head of digital media Adam Ware predicted the other broadcasters will follow suit this year with hydrid offerings. “It’s only a matter of time before we see CBS, Univision, ABC getting into the OTT space,” he said.

Increase in scope of OTT content, good. Discoverability and sampling of said content, not so much. “The problem is sampling,” Josette Bonte, chief strategy officer at CTM: Institute for Communication Technology Management, said at CES. “It’s like Spotify vs radio. Spotify is pretty cool if you know what you want to listen to. The tech is getting smarter, the metadata is getting smarter, but I worry about the sampling.” Gen Edge and other younger demos “find out what to watch by doing a Google search first. The fact that the search is not on the front end of the [service] is mind-boggling.” Once sampling improves, customers can see what a given service has to offer. “Most people don’t realize with these large offerings, the 50,000-title libraries, only about 5 percent of those are movies,” said Brendan Sullivan, EVP, global operations and technology at Vubiquity. “A lot of it is television going back nine, 10 seasons. The mix of alternate niche content is forcing the shift in unbundling and business models; to differentiate you’re going to have to have some innovative niche content.”
