Good morning. It’s Friday January 6, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Turner Sports is taking its sponsorships to the next level, announcing the launch of Turner Ignite Sports in a move to connect brands to its sports programming and properties via four main areas: intellectual property; live events and experiential marketing; creative services; and data solutions. Events would include the likes of the NCAA, March Madness, Bleacher Report and ELeague, leveraging the company’s “award-winning data, analytics and technology solutions that empower advertisers with advanced targeting, distribution and optimization of content across all screens.” The announcement was made by Turner President David Levy at CES during Turner’s Sports Business Innovation forum.

"We believe in creating powerful, long-term marketing partnerships rather than being confined by transactional relationships that stop and go because a sport’s season, event or show ends," said Will Funk, Executive VP of Sales and Property Sponsorships at Turner Sports, will head the endeavor. “Brands have a huge opportunity to be ‘always on,’ in a genuine, contextually relevant way that adds value to the consumer experience and generates greater results for their business.”

ON THE AIR

ESPN stalwart Chris Berman is changing his role with the company. The six-time National Sportscaster of the Year who arrived at ESPN in 1979 will step away from a slew of his current duties, including serving as the face of the company’s NFL studio coverage, NFL Draft and Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby. He will, however, continue to host ESPN’s NFL PrimeTime highlights show from the field after the Super Bowl as well as the NFL Conference Championship games. He will also offer opinion and perspective on historical events in the NFL, including still appearing weekly on Monday Night Countdown and handle play-by-play for ESPN Radio during the MLB Divisional Playoffs and participate in ESPN’s annual ESPYS Awards.

Speaking of ESPN, the company unveiled its MegaCast plans for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday at 8p. The traditional game telecast will run on ESPN with alternative productions on ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, SEC Network, ESPN Classic, ESPN Goal Line and ESPN3, while ESPN Deportes carries the Spanish-language telecast of the game. Versions include the Homers Telecast on ESPN2 with Clemson’s all-time leading passer Tajh Boyd and former Alabama center and three-time national champion Barrett Jones for the second consecutive year. Coaches Film Room on ESPNEWS will feature five coaches and limited commercial breaks, with additional MegaCast offerings set to include ESPN Voices (ESPNU), Finebaum Film Room (SEC Network), Sounds of the Game (ESPN Classic and ESPN3), Command Center (Goal Line and ESPN3), Home Town Radio (ESPN3), Data Center (ESPN3) and SkyCam (ESPN3). Overall, ESPN will have over 90 cameras inside Raymond James Stadium, including: SkyCam, Pylon Cameras (all eight), and a full complement of RF cameras and steadicams. Meanwhile, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and SEC Network will offer more than 70 hours of coverage starting today leading into and following the game.

FOX Sports reports that it recorded its most-watched college football season ever in 2016, with games averaging 1,320,000 viewers on the FOX broadcast network and FS1 to mark a rise of 11% over the 2015 season, according to Nielsen. FS1 numbers drew a 23% rise, anchored by the Red River Showdown on Oct. 8 while FOX was led by Ohio State’s win over Oklahoma on Sept. 17.

Speaking of ratings, NBC Sports’ Golf Channel on NBC coverage drew the largest US broadcast golf audience in 2016, delivering 71 million unique viewers for a 27% markup over 2015. Golf Channel also drew its largest total audience with almost 45 million unique viewers in 2016, and matched its highest-rated year ever for the third consecutive year with a .08 U.S. household rating.

In programming news, Telemundo and NBC Universo are set to carry the exclusive US Spanish-language simulcast of The Best FIFA Football Awards on Monday at 12:30p.  Telemundo Deportes presenters Andres Cantor, Miguel Gurwitz and Ana Jurka will lead the Spanish-language broadcast of the event, which will be hosted by Eva Longoria and Marco Schreyl at the TPC studios in Zurich.

NBC Sports Group detailed plans to offer more than 750 hours of linear and digital coverage of the FIS World Cup this season, with programming set to include 50 hours on NBCSN, more than triple the amount that aired on the network last season. This year’s schedule is highlighted by the World Alpine Skiing Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, from Feb. 7-19, and the World Nordic Skiing Championships in Lahti, Finland, from Feb. 23-March 5.

Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors will serve as co-host of NBA Inside Stuff beside Kristen Ledlow on Saturday at 4p. In the episode, Ledlow and Iguodala discuss the Warriors’ start to the season.

NBCSN tips off its 2017 college basketball coverage with five Atlantic 10 men’s basketball games this weekend, highlighted by an A-10 tripleheader on Saturday as well as an A-10 doubleheader on Sunday. Coverage begins Saturday at 1p with UMass/VCU. Mike Corey calls Saturday’s game alongside Ron Thompson.

CBS Sports Network kicks off the 2017 PBR season on Saturday at 8:30p with coverage of the Monster Energy Bucking Battle from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Coverage continues on Sunday at 8p with final round coverage.

Speaking of CBS Sports Network, the channel spotlights top-ranked Minnesota Duluth tonight at 8:30p as the team faces Colorado College. Ben Holden, analyst Dave Starman and reporter Shireen Saski call the action.

The NFL announced that Aquafina will serve as the presenting sponsor of the 2017 Pro Bowl, set to take place at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on Jan. 29. The 2017 Pro Bowl Presented by Aquafina will return to the traditional AFC vs. NFC format, with the NFL will host a week-long festivities focused on youth football to commemorate the brightest stars of today and tomorrow. As the presenting sponsor, Aquafina will be incorporated into numerous elements of the pregame week-long celebratory events and have a significant presence at Camping World Stadium during the Pro Bowl.

Learfield Communications acquired Mogo Interactive, an integrated digital marketing firm with the two companies continuing to operate under the Mogo brands and current employees will remain with the firm. “Mogo Interactive brings unprecedented digital knowledge and capabilities to Learfield,” said Learfield President and CEO Greg Brown. “Mogo provides unique capabilities to reach fans and ticket purchasers by reaching across devices and platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. We are excited about these abilities to better integrate the marketing efforts of our partners and clients as part of an overall marketing strategy.”

Hunt Brothers Pizza is expanding its partnership with Stewart-Haas Racing to include a four-race sponsorship of Kevin Harvick in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. Hunt Brothers Pizza will be the primary sponsor of Harvick’s No. 41 Ford Mustang April 8 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, May 27 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, July 7 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta and Sept. 2 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

Delta  the Official Airline of the Seahawks  is extending its 12status program,  a first-of-its-kind fan engagement program that allows Seahawks fans to earn Miles, merchandise and exclusive perks just for being a fan. The initiative will run through all Seahawks playoff games with fans able to earn 1 mile for every passing yard and 500 bonus miles with every 12,000 members that sign up.

German automaker brand Mercedes-Benz extended its partnership with AEG and Oriental Pearl Group for the naming rights of Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai until 2025. "Mercedes-Benz commenced the naming rights partnership for Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai in 2011. For six years, Mercedes-Benz Arena has connected our consumers and presented them a state-of-the-art venue that is a landmark in both Shanghai and Asia, along with outstanding world-class entertainment and performances. This naming rights extension of Mercedes-Benz Arena will continue to bring prominent returns and splendor both to our brand and consumers," said Duan Jianjun, EVP of Mercedes-Benz in China.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Twitter locked in a deal with the PGA TOUR to make the company the exclusive global platform to distribute, on a free basis, more than 70 hours of live competition coverage across 31 tournaments through the remainder of the 2016-17 Season. Twitter will begin live streaming at the CareerBuilder Challenge on January 19 and conclude at the season-ending TOUR Championship. Coverage typically will include the first 60 to 90 minutes from the early Thursday and Friday morning hours of PGA TOUR Live’s OTT subscription window and include pre-game analysis, interviews, range coverage, and live competition from the first two holes of each day’s PGA TOUR LIVE Marquee Groups.

NeuLion announced the availability of its NeuLion CE SDK Version 9.0 for advance playback, mobile to TV interactivity, total security, and live streaming up to 4K resolutions for Smart TV manufacturers. The kit provides Ultra HD TV manufacturers with a live 4K streaming technology solution that enhances the consumer experience on their Ultra HD TVs. "Live sports, delivered in 4K, is today at the technological forefront," said Nick Colsey, Vice President of Business Development, Sony Electronics, whose company is the first Ultra HD TV manufacturer to roll out the tech. "NeuLion is the leader in delivering live 4K streaming. Electronic Arts unveiled plans for the inaugural EA SPORTS Bowl. Partnering with Nomadic Entertainment Group, the event will take place at Club Nomadic in Houston on Feb. 2 and feature pro athlete tournaments in both EA Sports Madden NFL 17 and FIFA 17. After the tournament fans will see musical performances by Sam Hunt, The Chainsmokers and others. “The EA SPORTS party is always one of the hottest tickets in town during Super Bowl week and this year is one of our best shows ever,” said Randy Chase, Senior Marketing Director at EA SPORTS. This year has an amazing lineup of athletes and musical talent, and Club Nomadic is going to be one of the greatest venues we’ve ever had. We can’t wait to see everyone in Houston.”

ESL locked in its competitive rules for its first Destiny tournament, according to Gamerant. The move makes ESL the first official major gaming league to put the regulations in place. Tournament play with ESL will rotate game modes including Clash, Zone Control, and Supremecy in a single elimination bracket with a traditional 4v4 team setup

Get ready for vSports. VirZOOM, maker of VirZOOM Arcade virtual reality games, held the first ever live vSports competition at a private CES event sponsored by AMD, Fitbit, HTC and Life Fitness. The physical competition takes place in multiplayer VR games as users compete in vSports games on VirZOOM VR Bikes playing a suite of evolving VirZOOM Arcade games. The company announced they will cllaborate with vSports Centers around the United States to host a public nationwide vSports tournament in early 2017 where players can compete for prizes.

ROSTER MOVES

World Golf Foundation named Mike Whan, LPGA Commissioner, as WGF Chairman for 2017. He succeeds Tim Finchem, who recently retired as PGA TOUR Commissioner."It is an honor to serve World Golf Foundation and I look forward to continued collaboration among golf’s leading organizations," said Whan. "We made impressive strides as an industry in 2016 by bringing golf back to the Olympics; our momentum is strong heading into 2017."

U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association CMO Michael Jaquet is departing the organization this spring and the NGB will now search for a new chief marketing officer. Jaquet came to the USSA in 2012 after a career with College Sports Television and CBS Sports, where he rose to become senior vice president for cable sports sales at CBS. Over the past four years, sponsorship revenue has grown over 60%. With the development of a unique broadcast partnership with NBC, ratings have grown 35%, with a 700% increase in broadcast or streaming visibility of competitive skiing and snowboarding in America.
